Match Report
The Azkals were pressured by the Chinese early in the first half, the first fifteen minutes saw our national team being made to defend as the Hong Kong U-23 squad did one attack after another. After the twentieth minute mark they managed to find their rhythm and began dominating possession. Chieffy Caligdong managed to break through the Chinese defense and fired a shot only to be blocked by the post. A series of shots inside the Hong Kong box by James Younghusband, Roel Gener and Aly Borromeo were intercepted by either the bodies of the defenders or the keeper. At half time, the national side were trailing by two goals to nil.
The second half saw a revitalized Philippine team as the players dominated possession and were on the attacking side. James Younghusband found a way through the defense only to brought down inside the box, a penalty had been awarded. His brother Phil converted the spot kick from 12 yards to make it 2-1. There were several more shots made by the national team but were either saved or missed the target.
Brilliant passing made Phil find an opening and fire home the equalizer and made it 2-2. At that point, the game was back in the balance.
And Phil could've put the team in front at 3-2 when late in the match, he beat the Chinese keeper in a 1-on-1 situation and chipped in a shot only to be cleared off the line by a Chinese defender. The ex-Chelsea striker would've been gutted not to have sealed an ever-so-important hat-trick.
That would've been the last chance the Azkals had as the last fifteen minutes saw Hong Kong's Under-23 side score two more goals. Completing a 4-2 win over our national side.
