Quote from a Bong P. article on Malaya:www.malaya.com.ph/oct14/sports5.html...A case in point is Fil-Dutch midfielder Jason de Jong, who previously had problems with Weiss because of his ill-tempered behavior and was left out of the Azkals’ several international outings. De Jong has learned to toe the line and has since mended fences with his coach, paving the way for his return with the nationals since the Long Teng Invitational Cup in Taiwan. In fact, De Jong, 21, is tipped to be the team captain of the National Under-23 squad that will see action in the SEA Games.
From previous speculations, Neil Etheridge and Simon Greatwich had been previously tapped to be the skipper of the Under-23 team for the SEA Games. However, for reasons such as club commitments these have not been pushed through. Now that Jason de Jong is now being tapped to be the skipper of the U-23 team, I am very confident that I would like him to don the captain's armband as he has been a calming factor (albeit his short temper) for the senior team that I hope would be the same for the U-23 team. Let me hear your reason why he should (or shouldn't) be the U-23 team captain.

I'm sure he has learned his lesson especially with regards to his attitude and relations with the coach. He is a spark plug with plenty of raw emotion. If and that's a big IF, he learns or has learned to control and channel that aggressiveness of his, he should do fine. I'd love to have Manny Ott become co captain, he and JdJ have so much more experience than the rest. Of course leadership qualities cannot be seen by us but by the players and coaches themselves, so I hope they pick wisely.
One things for sure, with JdJ at the helm, no one's going to slack off.

I imagine De Jong having a whip while training with his team mates ;D Man, for me he is the alpha male.

He played great against SG and was quite decent against Nepal. Also, I think he will be the most cap player for the U23 if I'm not mistaken.

The idea of having the captain's armband helps with the maturity process is very very plausible. I believe it helped Aly. It should have helped Simon but apparently things happen, so it's not meant to be.
JdJ would be a great guy to have the armband on.

He will be concentrating with his club which leave the GK position to Muller.. Which is something Im kinda excited about .. I'm really impressed with this kid...

I'm glad that people seem to view De Jong in a positive light.
I think that the fact that he was able to patch things up with Weiss shows that he has gained some level of maturity.
I also agree that giving him the captaincy will help him grow as a player, too.

If you're an Azkal fan it's really hard not to like a guy who wears his emotions on his sleeves when playing. Having said that, I have been doing research on the historical fixtures of the NT and also contribute in the Foreign Football players thread and have noticed that he gets a yellow card(see long teng cup 2011, his youth team in the Netherlands and previous caps with the Azkals) with an alarming consistency! By coach Weiss giving him the responsibility of team captaincy I think JdJ will be forced to rethink his style of play or at least play with more control. I think the coach was deliberate when he gave JdJ the honors, I believe he knew that this would force JdJ to mature as a player sooner rather than later. I wish him and the U23 much success, I don't think they'll quite get a medal but will surely make the opponents know that the Philippines isn't laying down anymore.

I think he would be a good captain. He has this no-nonsense attitude. He showed more discipline in the games he played recently so i guess he's learning. And from what I've read about him, he's very frank, doesn't sugarcoat anything so tingnan lang natin kung may magslack off pa sa team niyan. I noticed sa mga games niya before, his work rate sometimes fluctuates but being team captain I think will improve him. This is my first post here after some lurking. It's always great reading your posts guys.

I dont think it will be a good idea. I think we will be shooting ourselve on the foot hear. 2 possible things, wearing the armband give you more rights to talk/complain to the ref, he mite over use it and get in trouble or he may get immunity. ;D

If S. Greatwich is unavailable, Jason De Jong is the next best option. Let's hope his growth in maturity will be duplicated soon by Mark Hartmann.

Frankly I don't think it is a good idea to have a captain who gets carded all the time. It sets a bad example for your teammates and it also means that he will not be available a lot of the time. On the other hand, if the coach is looking for intensity, he is the guy to look for.

I saw the Nepal game again today(my 3rd) and looked more closely at Jason's play in the match. I am concerned, he was brilliant in his intensity and emotion, very good with his tackles, unfortunately he has some very borderline yellow cardable tackles. While I know he has tremendous experience at the international level at his still young age, his rough and rugged play IS a concern. 2 yellow cards in 1 game in the LTC, 2 straight yellow cards in his 1st and 2nd game with his new youth team in the Netherlands numerous knockdowns of players in the Nepal game etc. I still stand by my statement on my last post above. Maybe this Captaincy can help him to be more responsible with his game actions. If not we're in trouble. Time will tell...

I was once told of Aly B's early days before he became captain that he is also a rough player. He has also records of borderline bookable tackles, but has this skill of connecting with the players at the emotional level which I think De Jong lacks for now. I hope he would emulate Aly's omnipresence on the pitch and he must control his style of play if he gets the armband.
