Azkals, Philippine Football Federation Renewed Contract With ABS-CBNby Jeman Villanueva February 11, 2012 - 12:40 am (16 hours ago) The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and the Azkals recently renewed their contract with ABS-CBN, which gives ABS-CBN the exclusive right to broadcast all the local matches of the Azkals and other football events of the PFF for the next four years. ABS-CBN will also exclusively air all the international matches of the Azkals beginning 2013. ABS-CBN Vice President for Sports Peter Musngi said he is happy that ABS-CBN Sports is extending its relationship with the PFF and the Azkals as the partnership will greatly benefit the sport in the country and give the Azkals the exposure they deserve. PFF President Mariano Araneta and Azkals team manager Dan Palami, meanwhile, expressed delight over the renewal of their contract with ABS-CBN, which started in 2010, as the network has not only made possible a boost in the exposure of the Azkals in the country but also in the international scene. Palami said that through ABS-CBN’s The Filipino Channel, the team has enjoyed an increased global following, with Fil-foreigners even expressing interest in joining the Azkals after seeing them on the channel. Also present in the contract signing were ABS-CBN Chairman and CEO Gabby Lopez, ABS-CBN Chief Finance Officer Rolando Valdueza and PFF legal counsel Atty. Ed Gastanes. orangemagazinetv.com/2012/azkals-philippine-football-federation-renewed-contract-with-abs-cbn/
So 4 years. So If ever we reach the ASIAN CUP, they will broadcast the match

Indeed there was a time when the USSF was paying ESPN/ABC to televise matches. Mid to late 1990s were the days when US Soccer was slowly coming out of the dark ages. Those were the days when the World’s Strongest Man competition would routinely whip a World Cup Qualifier game in viewership ratings. Maybe the Strongest Man competition might still give a Qualifier game competition, but not like before.
The rise of the Azkals wasn’t/isn’t exactly the same in that they burst out into the scene. A singular moment or competition could be identified that delineates the modern era from the dark ages, and so now everybody wants to have a piece of the street dog. The stations want to show games. The gossip shows want to have interviews. The “news” want to show players with actress girlfriends. And yes, the sports shows want to show good soccer.
ABS/CBN is putting on the spin when they say “P75M of air time.” Again, what does that mean? That means that if I want to sell a weight-loss device and advertise through an infomercial on ABS/CBN, I would have to pay them P75M a year of air time – this would be equivalent to the air time the Azkals games will have each year. The idea is that they’re giving the PFF a favor by airing the games. While that might have been a prudent strategy of the USSF years ago, it’s not a favorable strategy for the PFF now. Everybody wants to watch the Azkals.
The real deal is P1.2M/game. That’s it. That’s the only cash that’s being exchanged. Okay, there’s also the P30K for each of the provincial associations. The point is, the PFF got a really bad deal on this one. If ABS thought the viewership ratings are too low, let them tie the payment to the viewership ratings. I doubt they would want to go there.
Congratulations to ABS/CBN – you really did it to PFF and the football fans!

Brought up this thread again concerning AKTV's acquiring of broadcast rights in the Suzuki Cup. Will everyone agree on this move by TV5?

Brought up this thread again concerning AKTV's acquiring of broadcast rights in the Suzuki Cup. Will everyone agree on this move by TV5? So, with AKTV's acquiring of broadcast rights, this means that both ABS-CBN and AKTV will now show the Suzuki Cup right? If you ask me, I have no problems with that. It's better! because now, people who would watch the game, can be given different perspectives of the match. For sure both networks would bring in different "Knowledgeable" anchors. And there would be better coverage. Since both are on free TV more people will be able to watch. These networks also have different signal reach in each region, so people will just have to choose, ABS-CBN or AKTV. It's a Win-Win for the Fans.. ;D Plus, if you have cable, you can watch it at Star Sports.. ;D So, except for brown outs, we will have no problem watching the Suzuki Cup! YEY! ;D ;D

ABS-CBN's contract only includes coverage of the games of the men's national team. AKTV, meanwhile, acquired the brodcasting rights of the entire Suzuki Cup through worldsportgroup. They will receive the official direct feed from AFF. We'll have the opportunity to watch the matches of the other group as well.
The draw is in 4 days. Is AKTV showing it?

Apparently shanks608, Studio 23 won't be able to air it, including the home matches if the Azkals make it to the knockout stages. Here's my concern: if ever the Azkals reach the semis and/or the finals, will the venue (apparently Cebu Sports Complex) be able to have a sold-out crowd by then? I will not be surprised if the venue won't be filled, not because of the ticket prices or anything, but of the AKTV broadcast. A lot of provinces don't have a strong reception of AKTV; that includes Cebu. Not all (even abroad) will be able to follow the matches unless there would be a massive marketing outside the TV broadcast, which will include social media. So this will be an issue on how will TV5 cope up with the demands of the Pinoy viewing public come November. galiwocky: I don't think AKTV will broadcast the draw live. Maybe the news outfits on TV5 will announce the results during their newscasts later in the day.

Well they better make the promotion for the coverage really good, heck the production for the local presentation should be upped as well.

stellarboy Oh wow! I never knew Studio 23 won't be able to air it. I thought that since they have exclusive broadcast rights over Azkals matches, they would cover all including the Suzuki Cup. Well, too bad for those who have poor signal on AKTV. But the Suzuki Cup is still a few months to go. AKTV will have a lot of time promoting the matches. They can even promote it on TV5. I hope Studio 23 broadcasts this too though. And if the Azkals will get through the semi-finals hopefully, and have their home match in Cebu, I am pretty sure it will be a packed house. Word gets out easily in Cebu and it's very easy to gather a crowd. Plus the fact that it's in December. Most happenings in Cebu start in December all the way to January for the Sinulog. So people are already expecting one event after another.

According to Wikipedia, IBC 13 has a good number of stations nationwide. However, looking at the amount of kilowatts their transmitters have, I think only major areas of the mentioned provincial locations have good channel reception. I don't even think some of these stations are currently operating because of the current budget cuts of IBC, which is in fact a government-owned station, which only inked a deal with TV5 to use their facilities to run the AKTV block. San Miguel Corporation is apparently bidding to purchase IBC and sister-station RPN (which is now being run entirely by Solar Entertainment as ETC, a former cable-only channel). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intercontinental_Broadcasting_Corporation_channels_and_stationsIf TV5 is serious on helping IBC 13 improve its reach in the provinces, they must get IBC 13's approval to upgrade their current facilities such as transmitters in major provincial areas, like Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro and the others. It's costly and would take time, but I would be happy if a time comes that the provinces will appreciate a free-to-air sports channel that has a good coverage of football. However, my major concern is the Filipino diaspora abroad. Unlike ABS-CBN that has TFC spread in key locations around the world, TV5 is still a young, revived station, with its international channels Kapatid TV5 and AksyonTV International only available in Guam, the Middle East and parts of the UK, and soon in the US through Dish Network. I do appreciate that they are able to broadcast the UFL in these locations through Aksyon TV Int'l, but I think the network still lacks aggression in marketing the league in a Kapamilya-dominated diaspora. Why is AKTV not readily available in the provinces? Blame IBC 13's facilities. Why is ABS-CBN not being aggressive in inking deals with the provider in broadcasting the Suzuki Cup? Blame TV5 having a CEO able to offer a fat check to potential clients, and maybe ABS-CBN being "too much showbiz" when they took hold of the Azkals in 2011. Why is the UFL not readily followed by OFWs abroad? Because it's not readily available on their TV. It so happened that during the Singapore Cup, the team was Loyola where the Younghusbands are. Do we want to demand them of improving the facilities before they show the Suzuki Cup? I think we should, and we should act fast, before we see a decline of interest of following the Azkals just because ABS-CBN & Studio 23 aren't able to air it, or even cover it in their news. You know how network rivalries work here in the Philippines.

AKTV has poor reception here in Cebu, cable subscribers will have no problem since they can watch it on Star Sports or AKTV. in my hometown in Mindanao, there's no problem for me to watch it on cable tv but the bad thing is the rotating brownout, it is really frustrating.

Well, if you're lucky, can afford it, and the reception is strong, invest in those TV cellphones made by those cheap local brands like MyPhone or Cherry Mobile so we could watch the games even if away from home or there's a brownout. Luckily I'm in Davao City, which isn't affected by rotational brownouts, so I'm well and good on this one.
Speaking of Davao, AKTV/IBC 13's reception is only good for those locations near the downtown area. But if you go farther north or farther south, the signal gets weaker. Neighboring cities like Panabo and Digos don't receive AKTV well unless you have those specialized TV antennas.

Only way to access it is through Cable TV or some special antennas . ABS-CBN could contribute a part for the publicity, since they've been closely connected to the national team. But the bad thing about them usually is that if they don't have exclusive rights to the brodcast, they don't really follow the team and include them in their news coverage (except Pacquiao). Look at Gilas. 4th place in Asia last year and yet no trace of their heroics on ABS-CBN news programs, since AKTV had the rights to cover their games.

If they go to ABS-CBN, I hope they advertise the Azkals as actual athletes and not actors (The Buzz...)

ABS-CBN and AKTV would be great COMBO for the coverage mas malaki ang chance na mapanuod ng bawat pinoy kung anong estasyon nila gusto panuorin.
Sad point lang papayag ba mga networks na ito??? Alam nyo na pagkaka kitaan ang uunahin ng mga ito.

Just a reminder: ABS-CBN will broadcast all national team matches exclusively starting 2013 until 2016, which may include the AFF Suzuki Cup.
