PH-UFL selection battle Madrid side SaturdayBy Cedelf P. Tupas Philippine Daily Inquirer 8:55 pm | Monday, January 2nd, 2012 MANILA, Philippines—National team veterans Chieffy Caligdong and Phil and James Younghusband will spearhead the squad that will face Spanish side Internacional de Madrid at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Saturday in a charity match that will benefit victims of Typhoon Sendong. With stars of the United Football League also joining the local side, the team has now been called “Azkals Alyansa” just for the 4 p.m. match dubbed “Dili kamo nag-iisa” (You are not alone in Cebuano). “Football is said to be more than a sport, transcending borders languages, beliefs and cultures,” said Craig Burrows, one of the organizers of the event. “And now, it will provide badly needed relief to the thousands and thousands affected by Typhoon Sendong.” CF Madrid is expected to arrive in Manila on Thursday. Also named to the Azkals Alyansa are national team standouts Ian Araneta, Anton del Rosario, Nate Burkey, Roel Gener, Misagh Bahadoran, Carli de Murga, Lexton Moy and Angel Guirado.National under-23 players like Paolo Pascual, Jerry Barbaso and OJ Clarino have also been listed to the squad together with United Football League Cup best goalkeeper Edmundo Mercado and defenders Yves Ashime, Valentine Kama, Roxy Dorlas and Martin Doctora. The Philippine Red Cross has been chosen as the main beneficiary of the match proceeds with the LBC Foundation helping out organizers to in collecting and distributing donations during the match. Tickets for the match range from P100 to P500. sports.inquirer.net/30589/ph-ufl-selection-battle-madrid-side-saturday
Seems like Carli is sincerely committed with playing for the Philippines. I hope he will likewise be involved in the Challenge Cup coming up soon. Though I still favor del Rosario(absent Shrock) to start at RB, Carli's presence gives us so much more options. Now if only Juan Luis Guirado would come down already... Anyone notice Martin Doctora on the list? He's the AF CB correct? I've always liked him because of his steadiness in the CB pos and good height and size. Someone once said that he is a little bit on the older side and his pace is quite lacking. Just my thoughts, If during the Challenge Cup we lack depth and quality at CB(and Aly's probable absence), maybe he can be a substitute? Hope he plays well.

... This game may also be the last Azkals outing for veterans Roel Gener and Edmundo Mercado who at 36 and 37 inherited the title of Lolos of the team after last year’s retirement of Air Force stalwart Yanti Barsales.Like Yanti's last outing with a friendly with the UFL All-Stars last june, this could be their farewell match. All the best to them. Didn't Edmundo Mercado retire from the Azkals a long time ago? He wasn't even in the team that went to the Suzuki Cup last 2010. I think that he and Gener are still strong enough to play for the NT. Singapore's Aleksandar Đurić is turning friggin' 42 this August!! He doesn't even show signs of retiring! Even David Beckham is 36 and still highly sought after!

They are playing the Malditas the day before they play the men's team. They should be easy to defeat after the WNT beats them down.

CFIM willing to open football academy in PHabs-cbnNEWS.com Posted at 01/04/2012 12:18 PM | Updated as of 01/04/2012 3:52 PM MANILA, Philippines -- Third-division Spanish football club Internacional de Madrid (CFIM) is willing to open a football academy in the Philippines to help in the development of the sport in the country, according to the club's chairman, Stephen Newman. The club is set to play a charity match against the Philippine Azkals and United Football League (UFL) standouts on January 7 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, with all proceeds going to the victims of the Tropical Storm Sendong. The match, named "Dili Kamo Nag-iisa," will also be broadcast live on Studio 23. "We clearly have come over with one objective, which is to help raise money for this charity," Newman said. "But after having spoken to a number of people and having received such a warm welcome, I think the Philippines has a great hunger for learning and developing football." Newman said that after the charity game, the organization will be willing to "discuss the possibility of having a football academy here in the Philippines." He stressed that for the Philippines to continue improving in football, there must be a strong grassroots program. "Clearly, you have good players in Europe, born in Europe from a Philippine family," Newman said, specifically mentioning Phil and James Younghusband. "But I don't think in the future, going forward, you will be able to depend entirely on those type of footballers being imported back to the Philippines," he said. Newman suggested looking for young children who show potential for football, as well as getting trained coaches and staff who can develop those children. Newman added that while the Philippines still has a long way to go, he is confident the country will continue to climb up the international rankings. "Hopefully, one day the Spanish national team will be able to come here and play a game in Manila," he said. The Philippine Azkals finished 2011 ranked 159th by FIFA. Spain is ranked No. 1 and their national team won the World Cup in 2010. www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/01/04/12/cfim-willing-open-football-academy-ph

Provided translation: "Hello I am Emilio Butragueño the Institutional Director of Real Madrid. I would like to send in my own name and in representation of my Club and in all of Spanish sport, a message of solidarity for all of the people affected by the Sendong Typhoon, and at the same time encourage all of the Philippine supporters to join together at the Jose Rizal Memorial Stadium to watch the Charity game between the Azkals and CF Internacional de Madrid, who will be a magnificent Ambassador of our Sport in this visit to the Philippines"
Whooo!!! Looks like they are interested to watch this game in Spain since this will be broadcasted in Madrid Region at Telemadrid ??. (Don't know if that covers Real Madrid games) Well Goodluck to them since we will be winners here since we will be benefited in this especially in Mindanao.

Current and former NT members? I like this lineup better. Personally I'm watching Carli at mid, Jerry B and my "old guy" favorite Martin Doctora. I think it is safe to say we can include this exhibition game as 'warm up' for the Challenge Cup. Game on!!
Did Nate change his mind about playing?

Did Nate change his mind about playing? From what I can tell in his twitter account, he's coming from the US from holiday break. He left today (Jan 6) and arriving on the 8th. I guess he miscalculated his arrival date. Personally, I'm disappointed that the African imports in the UFL were taken off the line-up. I would prefer a team that has more of a "club feel" - with imports and all. On a similar note, I'm watching the news and they're about to report on CF Inter de Madrid's arrival! ;D

Malditas lost 0-4 against CFI Madrid I expected that kind of result. The Malditas have not developed as much as the Azkals. They have just come out from a long hiatus, after all. On a similar note, I just saw the news and the Azkals were training on the new BGC Turf in Bonifacio global city. That's the pitch that UFL div2 is supposed to be playing at. I actually thought that they were showing stock footage from the Azkals Germany training camp. Kudos to the builders!

@ Cowscrubber
Yeah I agree with you. They need more time.. I'm going to check out that field when I'm visiting the Philippines in July/August. Hopefully I can train with a team there while I'm on a vacation.
