Er, guys, big trouble with injury. see below Suspensions no setback for WeissThursday, 15 March 2012 18:52 Kathmandu: Philippines coach Michael Weiss has played down the significance of having to make do without two key players for Friday's semi-final against Turkmenistan, with James Younghusband and Angel Guirado. Guirado was the standout player in the Philippines' superb come-from-behind win over 2006 champions Tajikistan, setting up Phil Younghusband for the equaliser before netting the late winner, while James Younghusband - Phil's older brother - has also been in impressive form throughout the group stage campaign and was captain of the Azkals for their opening match against defending champions DPR Korea. Commenting on the impact of losing two key individuals for a side that has yet to play with its strongest squad, Weiss said: "Suspensions happen in football. We don't cry or lament about what happened as I have a squad of players that always want to play. They always come to me and say 'coach, let me play, let me play' so now they have a chance. "We have two players suspended and a central defender who is out injured but this means we are bringing in fresh legs and players who are looking forward to playing their first match in the tournament." And when asked who would fill the void created by the absent trio, Weiss glanced over to Turkmenistan coach Yazguly Hojageldiyev and joked: "Why would I give the names of the replacements...to make the other coach happy?" www.the-afc.com/en/tournaments/men-a-youth/afc-challenge-cup/38346-suspensions-no-setback-for-weiss

WEISS BELIEVES DESPITE SUSPENSIONS, AZKALS WILL DESTROY TURKMENISTAN’S FOOTBALLBy Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.comThu, 15 Mar 2012 Michael Weiss. A confident Philippine Azkals coach Michael Weiss believes that even with the suspensions meted out to key players Angel Guirado and James Younghusband and the injury of Jason Sabio the team spirit is high as the Azkals hope their historic run will continue and they will beat Turkmenistan to earn a berth in the AFC “Challenge Cup” finals for the very first time. ABS-CBN Studio 23 will telecast what promises to be a gripping match “live” at 4:00 p.m. with commentators Bob Guerrero and injured Azkals team captain Ali Borromeo. In an overseas telephone conversation with the Manila Standard, Weiss said “we don’t need to show too much respect because Turkmenistan was in a much easier group where they played two weak teams in Maldives and Nepal and easily passed them.” The Philippines after a solid game against defending champions North Korea who had seven world cup players lost 0-2 but came back to defeat 2008 champions India 2-0 and 2006 champions Tajikistan 2-1 with a classic late header by Angel Guirado following an equalizer from prolific goal-scorer Phil Younghusband who raised his total tally of goals for the Azkals in international matches to 21. In the latest FIFA world rankings the Philippines which is bound to move up after its continuing improvement is likely to move up from its current No. 156 ranking which is ten rungs higher that Turkmenistan at 166. Weiss described Turkmenistan as having “a young side, a youthful side but still lacking in experience. We will give them what we gave Tajikistan by playing disciplined football which they don’t like. They want to play football and we will destroy their football a little bit and hopefully be the winners here.” The German coach who has steered the Azkals to their finest finish in the Challenge Cup said he “expects clear improvement from (Chieffy) Calidong and (Paul) Mulders. They had to go through the tournament and adapt to the situation because both of them have not played for a long time. Chieffy especially that tomorrow (Friday) we will shine again.” After a training session at 3:30 p.m. Nepal time, Weiss will decide on his line-up even as he emphasized that “the players who will come in now as replacements have worked like hell and they want to prove themselves.” However, Weiss did not wish to reveal his possible choice of players to replace Guirado, James Younghusband and Sabio because he wanted to maintain the eagerness and competitive spirit of the aspirants until not too long before game-time.

Azkals play Turkmenistan hoping to land in Challenge Cup finals for the first time.businessmirror.com.ph/home/sports/24614-azkals-play-turkmenistan-hoping-to-land-in-challenge-cup-finals-for-the-first-timeTHURSDAY, 15 MARCH 2012 20:15 THE Azkals hope to ride its lucky streak and gate-crash the title match of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup when it takes on Turkmenistan in Friday’s semifinals at the Dashrath Stadium in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Azkals and the Green Men face off at 4:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the championship against the victor of the other semifinal between North Korea and Palestine. “We played better football in the last two games of the group. We were organized and we made Tajikistan travel back home early,” Azkals’ German coach Hans Michael Weiss told the web site www.goalneapl.com. With co-captain James Younghusband and Angel Guirado sitting the match out after getting booked in their 2-1 win over Tajikistan, Weiss urged his other players to step up.
“We have good players who can fill the void. They always ask me to give them a chance and I am now giving them a lottery to prove their worth,” Weiss added. “Fresh legs are coming in the team so I am confident that they will fire their cylinders to help the team win.”
Jason de Jong, who played in the team’s 0-2 loss to North Korea, Marwin Angeles and Lexton Moy are the players that Weiss will be counting on in the match against Turkmenistan, runner-up in the 2010 Challenge Cup.Team manager Dan Palami said they would maximize on what they have to continue their fairy tale run in the tournament. Bracketed in the so-called Group of Death, the Azkals finished second in Group B following their come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Tajikistan on second-half goals by Phil Younghusband and Guirado. The Philippines is ranked 156th by the Fifa, compared to the 166 of Turkmenistan, which has not played as many internationals as the Filipino side. But the Azkals couldn’t take them lightly, especially after the squad topped its group unbeaten. The Green Men blanked Nepal, 3-0, at the start of their Group A match, forced Palestine to a scoreless draw and triumphed over the Maldives, 3-1. Turkmenistan head coach Yazguly Hojageldiyev is impressed with the way the Filipinos are playing but guaranteed a victory for the Green Men. “I have seen all the matches that the Philippines played in this championship. I can say that we are ready to play against the Azkals. We respect our opponent but we will win the match,” he said. “We don’t want to miss this golden opportunity. We will try our best to create history by reaching to the finals,” he added. The Azkals started their campaign with a defeat, surrendering two goals to defending champion North Korea before reviving their hopes with wins against India and Tajikistan to reach the Challenge Cup semifinals for the first time. And Weiss said they won’t waste this chance of reaching a new milestone for Philippine football. “We are here to make our country proud and we will try our best to reach the final,” he said. The finals is set on Monday at 6:30 p.m. The battle for third place is set on the same date also at the Dashrath Stadium. (Joel Orellana)

4-2-3-1 Formation, Pivot on Mulders, Angeles and Moy. . I like this formation. Both Mulders and Juani are good in keeping possession. Both players have good composure and high passing completion rate. I think those traits will complement the system that we have defensively. I also agree to play Moy in that position. He's a thinking player. Follows the game plan very well. Also has a good passing completion rate which will be beneficial for Phil.

Turkmen target Asian Cup ticketwww.the-afc.com/en/tournaments/men-a-youth/afc-challenge-cup/38344-turkmen-target-asian-cup-ticketTurkmenistan coach Yazguly Hojageldiyev Some notes for the coach: 1)Turkmenistan's national coach for 2 years now 2)Since taking over the national chores in Feb 2010, he gave Turkmenistan an international 7-2-5 win-loss-draw record, which include 2 draws with North Korea and 1 with Indonesia. 3)He brought 12 players in the Turk national team for this AFC Cup that played for him in the Turkmenistan premier league from his club HTTU Asgabat. 4)The coach is just 35 years old (17 years younger than Michael Weiss).Kathmandu: Turkmenistan coach Yazguly Hojageldiyev reiterated the importance of a place at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup that victory in the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup will bring as he prepares his side for Friday's semi-final with the Philippines. Turkmenistan, who missed a place at the last AFC Asian Cup after losing in the final of 2010 Challenge Cup to DPR Korea, advanced to the last four by topping Group A courtesy of 2-0 victories over hosts Nepal and a goalless draw with fellow semi-finalists Palestine. And now Hojageldiyev is targeting a victory over the tournament's surprise package as they continue their quest for AFC Challenge Cup glory and a coveted berth in the continent's premier competition. "We respect the Philippines and are ready to play any team," he said at the pre-match press conference on Thursday. "Winning this tournament will also get us a ticket for the Asian Cup and we are playing to win." Standing in their way is a Philippines side brimming with confidence having reached the semi-finals for the first time in their history and having already accounted for Tajikistan, Azkals head coach Michael Weiss feels his side are well prepared to deal with their Central Asian neighbours. "Turkmenistan is similar to the 'Russian style' like Tajikistan and the match against Tajikistan was ideal preparation for tomorrow's game," Weiss said in reference to their impressive 2-1 win over the 2008 Challenge Cup champions in their final Group B fixture.
"We have had some intense group stage matches while Turkmenistan's has been relatively easier against the likes of the Maldives and Nepal."The first game we played was against the tournament favourites and it was only 2-0 and in the next match we defeated India 2-0 even though our performance was not at a level we expect. Our third match was much better than before and we defeated Tajikistan which nobody expected. "We are very happy to be in the semi-finals and it is something that at the start of the tournament many people thought would not be possible."

Amanov wary of 'hungry' Azkals Thursday, 15 March 2012 21:54 3x2_turkmenistan_gfxKathmandu: Turkmenistan star Arslanmyrat Amanov has dispelled any notions that the Philippines will go into Friday's semi-final as the underdogs citing the Azkals impressive win over Central Asian neighbours Tajikistan. Amanov, who put in a virtuoso display as Turkmenistan finished top of Group A with a 3-0 win over hosts Nepal, watched from the stands as the Philippines came from a goal down to defeat the inaugural AFC Challenge Cup winners 2-1 to qualify for the semi-finals for the first time in their history and the 21-year-old's assessment was that the best team won on the day "I think the Philippines played much better than Tajikistan," Amanov told www.the-afc.com. "You could see from the first minute that their players were hungrier. They wanted it more." Amanov admitted that the Philippines' player that impressed him the most was Phil Younghusband, the tournament's joint leading scorer with three goals, while the performances of Phil's older brother James and match-winner Angel Guirado also caught the eye. The latter two are suspended for Friday's final-four fixture and while Amanov thinks that the duo's absence is a bonus for his side, he stresses it is not a major factor in the way the Turkmen will approach the match. "The Philippines number 10 (P. Younghusband) is a good player as are numbers 7 (J. Younghusband) and 12 (Guirado) so for us it is a plus that they cannot play," said the HTTU star, who was also crowned Turkmenistan's best midfielder last year.
"But we prepare to play teams and don't focus on one or two players. If you think about individuals and not the strategy to play against the team then you are not concentrating 100% and this could be costly." Amanov is also not letting his attention stray to a possible final with DPR Korea and the chance to avenge Turkmenistan's penalty shootout defeat to the Chollima in the final of the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup. "We are not thinking about playing DPR Korea or playing Palestine," he said. "We are only thinking about winning our semi-final against the Philippines and then we will start preparations for the final.
"For me, both teams are strong, maybe stronger than us, but it is not important who we face in the final. We are here to win the Challenge Cup and will be ready for anyone." www.the-afc.com/en/tournaments/men-a-youth/afc-challenge-cup/38349-amanov-wary-of-hungry-azkals
