Global determined to gauge continental standing Published on Tuesday, 19 March 2013 09:12 Global earned the right to become the first ever club from the Philippines to take part in the AFC President’s Cup after edging Kaya on goal difference to be crowned 2012 United Football League (UFL) champions. And the draw for the Group Stage of the 2013 edition of the ever-evolving continental club competition has presented Global with a massive test of their credentials after they were pooled alongside six-time finalists Dordoi as well as Yeedzin and KRL (Khan Research Laboratories), both of whom are no strangers to the AFC President’s Cup with Bhutan and Pakistan champions making their fourth and third tournament appearances respectively. “This is first time we are participating in the AFC President's Cup so to be very honest we don’t have much of an idea about the opponents but we are aware about what the Kyrgyzstan club Dordoi have achieved over the years as they have finished winners twice and runners-up four times,†Lorenzo told www.the-afc.com following Tuesday’s draw at AFC House. “This competition will be a means to gauge where our club stand in the continent. At the same time, we will also know the positioning of our league which is also very young,†continued Lorenzo, whose team has enjoyed a fantastic few seasons. They lost just two of their 18 matches in their victorious 2012 UFL campaign having finished runners-up to Philippines Air Force the previous season but they had already signalled their potential at becoming a major force in the fledgling Filipino football scene in 2010 when they won Division 2 in the inaugural United Football League season without losing a single game. And Global, who boast seven experienced Philippines internationals in their ranks, will have no shortage of matches in the lead up to their AFC President’s Cup debut in May with five UFL games on the agenda, starting with Tuesday’s top of the table clash with Stallion FC. Karl Decena, InterAKTV · Monday, April 1, 2013 · 12:23 am AKTV file/Toto GamboaUnited Football League champion Global FC made another high-profile move in an effort to beef up its lineup for the Asian Football Confederation President’s Cup this May. Global signed highly-touted national team striker Joshua Beloya, who helped Ceres FC of Negros Occidental to win the Philippine Football Federation-SMART National Club Championships this year. “thank you guys! excited to play for the superstrong UFL team @globalfc_PHL” Beloya wrote on his Twitter account. Beloya is no stranger to UFL action, having suited up for Kaya FC during its League runner-up run last year. He made headlines during the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia, when he scored back-to-back goals in the dying minutes to lift the Philippine squad to a 3-2 comeback victory over Laos. The President’s Cup is a tournament among champion clubs from emerging football nations in Asia. It imposes a limit on foreign players on each team, forcing Global, which currently has eight imports, to beef up its roster with local players. Aside from Beloya, Global has recently added Jason De Jong and Eduard Sacapaño in an effort to bolster its lineup in time for the competition. Global will represent the country in the Philippines’ first appearance in the tournament, set at the Cebu City Sports Center this May.

Fair Play: Cebu needs a miracle for AFC Presidents CupI AM really not that convinced by the reason that the “misunderstanding” between the Cebu Football Association and the Cebu City Sports Center management was because the religious activity was supposedly booked last December yet and the management can't turn down the request of the organizers to put up a stage at the football pitch. The fact that this wasn't mentioned in their previous meetings, (By the way, there's going to be a stage 11 days before the tournament starts) is one. And having been a regular in CCSC manager Ricky Ballesteros' office, I know how effective they are in anticipating future conflicts of schedules as they have a whiteboard calendaring all events, sometimes months in advance is another. Based on the religious group’s website, too, the event at the CCSC isn’t even listed in their calendar, which already lists events in May. “Gubot kaayo,” one of those working on the pitch told me when I dropped by last Saturday. “Nakurat mi tanan.” But the major reason why I am not convinced is that it’s the election season and as anyone knows, politicians will do anything--dance, sing badly and grant last-minute requests—for extra publicity and to collect favors. Why do I think that way? Because when I went to the CCSC, I saw a tent bearing a name of a candidate for councilor of Talisay City whose group is also supporting the same group that the incumbent Cebu City mayor is supporting. I could be wrong, but you can connect the dots. And if you run a government facility, well, you can't say no to requests like this. Engr. Rodney Orale, the man in charge for the preparation of the pitch, said there’s nothing they can do about the religious rally, except pray for a miracle that the grass will grow back in two days for AFC final inspection. Yes, the event will start on May 8, but the final inspection is on April 30. Orale said that in a conversation with some of those with the religious group, he was told that "If you believe in Jesus, the grass will grow." But to borrow a famous saying, yes, we all believe in God but we still lock our doors at night and we get a job so we can have a decent living, right? What happens if the pitch fails the AFC inspection? Will the AFC push through with the Presidents Cup in Cebu or will Kyrgyzstan or Bhutan get the hosting job? If that happens, that's a big embarrassment, not only to the CCSC, CFA or Cebu City, but to Philippine football. And to those espousing sports tourism, that's a big loss. That's 88 rooms--22 per team--over 10 days in the peak season, and that's just for the delegations. And, mind you, these players are stars in their own countries and have a following, a tweet here, an Instagram post there about how they enjoyed Cebu? That will do wonders. Take the case of Singapore, the players enjoyed their stay in Cebu so much that they returned, with families in tow. What happens if the pitch fails inspection? Didn't I say we need a miracle? The CFA and CCSC can get on each other's throats but it's fortunate--despite this unfortunate incident--that they are not. Because even if the AFC event doesn't push through, there's still that June 8 friendly. Sir Ricky said there's no contract between the CFA and CCSC as to limiting the use of the pitch during the preparation stage and for the next friendly, I think both parties should put everything in writing, and the fine-print should include barring last-minute requests from anyone, even from P-Noy himself. As for the rest of fans wanting to see the AFC Presidents Cup? Pray for that miracle…but keep the doors locked and keep your day job. cebufootball.blogspot.com/2013/04/fair-play-cebu-needs-miracle-for-afc.html

Stage hampers field prep for AFC Presidents CupBy Cheska D. Geli Saturday, April 27, 2013 A MISUNDERSTANDING broke out but was eventually settled after a stage was put up at the Cebu City Sports Center for a religious activity. The 24 by 32-meter stage is to be used for an annual event of a religious group. “Ang among concern kay ang kabug-atan sa stage if mulubog nya siya kay patay na ang grass,” said Engr. Rodney Orale, who is in charge of rehabilitating the field for the Asian Football Confederation Presidents Cup, where teams from Bhutan, Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan will face off with Global FC of the Philippines. The stage is placed where the stage for the Sinulog was placed, and Orale said they were planning to apply fertilizer this weekend in that area to repair the pitch damaged during the Sinulog. Members of the Cebu Football Association requested the CCSC to not allow the putting up of the stage in the football pitch, which is being prepared for the three-day international tournament. However, CCSC manager Ricky Ballesteros said they can’t do that because the event was booked last December, while CFA booked their event last March. The CCSC pitch was closed for rehabilitation since March. Ballesteros also said that they can’t turn down previous bookings of clients. He also added that there was no written contract between the CFA and CCSC that states they are not allowed to put up a stage in the field. There had already been previous arrangements between the two groups but these were mostly verbal agreements. A written contract is set to be signed by both parties when Ballesteros returns from the Palarong Pambansa this Monday. Ballesteros assured that despite this event, they will always be willing to support the activities of the CFA and that it won’t do much damage to the field. “It won’t be like the stage in Sinulog. It won’t majorly affect the field,” said Ballesteros. CCSC had provided the carabao grass for the field and they will be willing to give more if the situation calls for it. Orale, on the other hand, just hopes the turnout won’t be bad since they can’t do anything about it already especially that the stage has been set. “Mag ampo na lang sad mi na dili grabe ang damage,” said Orale. www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/sports/2013/04/27/stage-hampers-field-prep-afc-presidents-cup-279746
Questions: 1. What religious group is that? 2. Why do they permitted them to use it despite the pitch is maintained for the AFC Presidents Cup? They could get another place like the place where San Pedro Calungsod Thanksgiving Mass was held in Cebu. 3. Well, if they didn't pass the inspection on April 30, then who will be the host? Will is still be us or another? Would we change the venue like Panaad? All I can say is Good Luck I hope Cebu still gets the nod on April 30.

Uhmm, CFA should have requested to move the stage to the track & field racetrack instead. Or maybe they are preserving the racetrack for some continental competition? Pfft.

]Cebu gets Asian Football Confederation’s nod -AA+A By Cheska D. Geli Wednesday, May 1, 2013 THE Cebu Football Association (CFA) finally received the blessings of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Committee in the country’s debut hosting of an international inter-club tournament in Cebu City next week. AFC representatives came here last week to check on the preparations and were impressed with how the CFA is handling everything. The 2013 AFC President’s Cup Group B will be held at the Cebu City Sports Center on May 8, 10 and 12 with clubs Dordoi FC of Kyrgyzstan, Yeedzin of Bhutan, KRL FC of Pakistan and Global FC of the Philippines competing. Group A matches will be played in Nepal, while Group C will be in Cambodia. ALL SET. AFC President's Cup organizers (from left) Nimrod Quiñones, Rodney Orale, CFA president Pericles "Ricky" Dakay, Glenn Quisido and Rico Navarro announced their readiness for the hosting next week. (Photo by Arni Aclao of Sun.Star Cebu) CFA has been preparing for this hosting and tried to overcome the challenges that came with it. With only a week left to polish all the preparations, CFA still has to think about the field, lights and tickets. The successful turnout of the Face-off: Lions vs. Azkals friendly had helped the local body to gain the trust of AFC committee, which sent representatives to conduct an inspection two weeks ago. The preparation hit a snag when a stage was set up and took half of the field that the CFA was trying to rehabilitate. CFA officials said yesterday they were able to solve this. It left holes in the field after it was removed and the group took the immediate move to plant new grass on each holes left by the frame that were dug deep down on the field. The stadium lights powered by generator sets were also improved. The Philippine Football Federation sent 20 sets of 1,500-watt lights on top of the 20 sets that the CFA provided themselves. “If Singapore had impressive lighting, this will be more impressive,” said CFA President Ricky Dakay. Tickets will still be sold at SM Tickets and will still follow the Sinulog color format. Seated tickets are priced at P1,000 for the VIP, P500 for the red, blue and white areas and P100 for the pink, yellow and green or the general admissions area. One ticket is good for one game day, which has two scheduled matches. In offering the public with affordable ticket prices, they will have the season pass promo which is a buy two, take one offer. The release dates for the tickets have not been announced yet as it waits for the go signal from the AFC. Head for Security Nimrod Quiñones advised the spectators not to bring umbrellas, deadly weapons, bottled drinks and cannisters on game day for the safety of everyone. Meanwhile, it will be a tough tournament for Global as it faces Dordoi and KRL, which made it to the final stage last year. The two guest teams will open the single round robin matches on May 8 at 4:30 p.m. followed by Global FC and Yeedzin FC at 6:30 p.m. On May 10, it will Dordoi FC against Yeedzin FC followed by Global FC and KRL FC and on May 12, it will Yeedzin FC FC taking on KRL FC and Global will challenged Dordoi FC. Organizers would like to stress that unlike the previous friendly matches they hosted, this is a tournmaent which means all games will be bearing and all match-ups will be crucial. “The key to the success of this tournament depends on the full support of the Cebu Football community,” said Ricky Dakay. www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/sports/2013/05/01/cebu-gets-asian-football-confederation-s-nod-280197-i think tickets are kinda expensive
