This is the current formation of Stallion-Sta. Lucia FC where they have been successful early in the 2013 UFL season. Read on:
Description
Very rarely employed in the modern game but it was popular in Germany where coaches wished to flood the midfield in order to break but the opponents play and prevent passing attacks coming through from the defensive third.
Defensive points (strengths and weaknesses)
-3 defenders are unable to cover the width.
-Wing backs needed back to defend and track runners, without being forced into becoming defence minded full backs.
-Over packed midfield resulting in less time and space for the opposition.
-Defensive screens available to create a defensive box in the middle of the pitch.
Attacking points (strengths and weaknesses)
-Players may interfere with each other. Over packed midfield resulting in less time and space to generate attacks.
- Lone striker so needs to be supported immediately. Although this formation does provide enough cover for midfielders to gamble and get forward early.
- Width offered.
Best employed
It is very difficult to say when a formation is best employed as it greatly depends on the strengths and weaknesses of individual teams, both your own and the opposition, as well as the tactics employed within each set up. However, this formation can be employed when the opposition is playing a 4-5-1 and the game plan is to prevent them passing the ball around. It is also possible to play this formation when the opposition is playing a 5-4-1 and you have a number of attack minded midfielders would could cause problems to the opposition with late runs into the box.
