Ernie has said that he went with a young team to give U19 players experience. There is no doubt that there are young players with talent but most managers would experiment with a young lineup in friendlies. The AFF is an important tournament for the Malditas and with teams from Japan and Australia present, it deserves some respect. It does not make sense to me to use WNT games to give the U19 a tuneup. Myanmar is an experienced team with a professional coach. I expect that Ernie used the best players who were available to him and whose participation was within the WNT budget.

It's getting pretty old to hear Coach Ernie sounding high and mighty prior to any tournament, only to always fall short after. That has been the case since years ago even without the present line-up. Now, that has gotten worse with the influx of fil-foreigners into the team. But the result remains the same.
I get it that we should be confident on our chances prior to the tournament to help the team's morale, but in Ernie's case, his pre-tournament posturing borders on extreme cockiness to the point of underestimating his opponents (save for example Japan). During the WC qualifiers, he was even quoted as saying that he doesn't care how the other team plays since he's confident of wining the tournament. Perhaps he should tone down a bit and respect the other teams more by doing more scouting work on the opponents. I am sure he does his work ok but there's more room for improvement.

I see your points macduff and jobe. Here's my take. Most of the US based Malditas are still in college and their current season has just started. Getting them to come will be a tough ask. And with the SEAG in a few months time, asking their schools to allow them to play in the AFF and SEAG will make them miss a considerable amount of time with their college game commitments as well as their academics. So i guess he chose the SEAG to bring his A team for reason mentioned. This leaves him the only option of bringing high school U19 players/candidates, 9 of them if I'm not mistaken. If you notice he named to college players in Larot and Oro but were not able to make it. Houplin, Park and Baysa were able to make it because they're done with school. Sanderson on the other hand was not able to complete her citizenship papers. As to the coach's pronouncements prior to tournaments, I kinda tend to agree with you jobe and you may have a point that perhaps he is so confident in his team/strategy that he tends to overlook/respect some of the traditionally stronger teams in the region. I'm not even sure if we do have a good scouting reports against our opponents. Add to that he was not able to make good with his expectation of his team dating back to last year's AFF Championship. True the team been getting stronger since last year. To be honest that AFC qualifier team could have beaten Thailand and we had very good chances of winning that game. We were just unlucky and to think that lone goal by Thailand appears to be offside. The SEAG will be the ultimate gauge if coach can really bring this team to the next level. He will have most if not all players available to his disposal to win the gold medal. On paper this will be the strongest WNT/Malditas ever to play for the country. These players are very skilled individually and may be even better than the best players in the region. For me it will be judgement day for coach Ernie. Most of the AFC players will most likely play for the SEAG along with a few from this AFF lineup and perhaps a couple of new additions. And I hope he forms and draft the best players to make the team even if it means displacing the so called mainstays of the squad.

Ernie has been successful in school, in business, and in the UFL with the Stallions. He did not get that way by being humble. He is not about to change now. I suspect much of his bravado is a reaction to those who think that women do not even have a place in football and should just restrict themselves to beauty pageants while all the resources and attention goes to the men. The refusal of Puma to outfit the WNT was a huge insult. Their demolition of 55 ranked Iran was a huge accomplishment, but people like Jobe say "the result remains the same". Nobody else in the Philippines wants to champion the WNT. I think it makes him try three times as hard to get attention and support. Yes it puts some people off. Well it puts me off when football supporters refuse to recognize that the Malditas have made a huge improvement, and put down their achievements.

When I said that "the result remains the same", it refers only to non-achievement by the coach of his earlier pre-tournament pronouncements. Not about the achievements of the team. It puts me off when football supporters conclude that criticizing the coach is equivalent to downplaying the achievements of the team.

Sadly, I don't think any of the Fil-foreign players will be part of this squad.
