" This is from a post I made two years ago. With 2013 coming to a close I figured I’d grade the progress of PFF and football in the Philippines in general. Three years ago, with the magic at the Suzuki Cup, eyes were finally on the team. There was discussion on these boards about when the Azkals would make it to the World Cup, and I thought about it and came up with a realistic, aggressive timeline for the earliest time it could happen. Going to the World Cup necessitates progress at all fronts – stadiums, class players, etc, and so I figured I’d list those goals down. Revisiting the goal of #30 in 2030, here are my grades for the progress in each category. FIFA ranking: A It’s incredible that the team has reached 127. Maybe it’s deserved, maybe not, say what you will about the flaws of the ranking system and the details in the calculation, but no one can argue against the idea that it’s a loose indicator. I put down 120 for the end of the 2014 year. I hope we can keep the upward progress. World Cup Qualifying: no grade We know that the Azkals got to the 2nd round in 2011 where they were beaten by Kuwait. But they managed to get there by beating Sri Lanka. No grade because this was not a goal for 2013, but if we take the results from 2011, that would be an A-. The minus is because I think we could have done a little better against Kuwait. Suzuki Cup: C Made the semifinals again, but alas Singapore got us. For 2014, nothing less than making the finals must be the goal. # of International Stadiums: C The FIFA recommendation is 30K seating capacity for international games. I don’t know if Rizal Memorial has that. The McKinley Hill has 2K, the CCSC in Cebu has ~8K, and Panaad has 15K. The NEU (Bulacan) will have 30K when completed and will be a real game changer. A grade of C because while some of these stadiums may have the recommended pitch size of 105 x 68 meters, none of them can seat 30K. League Status: A It’s growing stronger in Manila, there was a team from the Visayas that made it for one season, and there’s already talk of expansion. Personally I think too fast an expansion is detrimental to the long term goal of a national league. # full time elite training academies: D Correct me if I’m wrong, but there’s none. One grade above an F because there are football schools and camps. Still, none are full time, fully funded, for the elites. # players in top leagues: C There’s Schrock and Etheridge. No one else who has played for the Azkals is currently in one of the top leagues. I was hoping we would have four by this time, and six by the end of 2014. Unfortunately, this is one goal that is beyond the control of the PFF or local associations. # players in secondary leagues: A I’ll consider that the Younghusband brothers would likely make it to a 3rd or 4th tier club, and add to that many of those playing abroad, and we’re good in this category. Having more would improve the pool to choose from, and suspect this trend of finding more players in this category will continue. As for the rest of the categories – PFF budget, # class A coaches, # international referees, I have no idea. I just hope PFF is taking a close look at each of these items and working hard to increase the number. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

Great post! While the past few years have been amazing for Philippine Football fans, I've found myself feeling not-so-great about 2013 in general. And that may say more than it does. Prior to Chris Greatwich's equalizer against Singapore in the 2010 Suzuki Cup, I thought a 1-0 loss would have been a monumentally positive result! Nowadays I can't accept that as a good result anymore. Yes, I do feel we're honestly still behind or at best at par with a lot of ASEAN teams. But we've gotten good enough to win with our current pool of Azkals, as opposed to previous mentality where I'd be happy with a 1-0 loss. I just fear the U23 development hasn't been as good and the short term future of our team doesn't bode well as it is right now. What happened to training camps in Japan, the Middle East, and Germany in the past? With the importance of upcoming tournaments, maybe we should revisit those strategies again and include the U23 for what it's worth. I feel positive about the development of the very young though. Never before have I seen so many kids interested in football with so many options in training. If things keep up the way they are going with them, we have a bright future ahead.

I don't know how you posted with a straight face. For the sake of not writing a post that comes across as an essay, all I'll say is that you've got this notion that development is a straight line when it obviously isn't. This is also where a lot crap from supposed "fans" comes from. They (you), got these all these preconceived notions/expectations that this and this should happen by this time... by this time we should have this and this... by this time we should have qualified for that... etc. When in reality most of those were never realistic to begin with. And when things don't fall in line with those, that's where the (uncalled for) bashing starts. It's ridiculous!

While I do agree with you " brimstone"(about the road map) perhaps you can tone down the tostestarone. For a new member in this forum you've managed to alienate yourself to even those who agree with you and managed to get your first thread thrown into the garbage can because of your uncalled for arrogance. YES, this is a public forum NO you cannot say or act like there are no rules. If you cannot understand this or did not read the forum rules, let me make it simple: keep your discussions civilized, leave the extreme attitude out of here. It's fun to argue your point, we know, we do it here all the time but don't take it personally and welcome to usapangfootball. Happy New Year.

Well, "Wiking" (lol at quoting my username), where did I say that I can act or say things like there are no rules?!? I think you've become accustomed to discussions where all you do is agree with each with other and stroke each others egos to no end. Yes I have strong views and if I find something ridiculous or outlandish such as that "roadmap", I'll say so within limit. If you can't handle a bit heat then that's all on you. My first thread didn't thrown out because of my supposed arrogance. It got thrown out because of a retard ruling that you can't discuss the nickname of the MNT! Surely you should've known that since you're a mod?! And I didn't alienate myself even to those who supposedly agree with me. You guys are getting thrown off because again, you guys can't seem to take a bit of heat. There's too much stroking of egos going on. You even say at the end there that I shouldn't take it personal... well there you go. If you're telling me that surely the same applies to you and every other member? A bit of heat doesn't mean one is being uncivilized or as you put it, has excess "tostestarone."

brimstone, if you think roadmaps are stupid in general, then it means you would classify the J. League 100 year roadmap, the Aluminum industry roadmap, the Semiconductor industry roadmap, etc. (do a search on industry roadmap, sports roadmap of any country) as stupid exercises. So what does that make you? An expert? Show me an organization without a roadmap, and I will show you a stagnant organization.
If you think this particular roadmap is stupid, then let us know in particular what is. Write your essay, your post, your arguments on the content.

I think the roadmap is realistic except for two things:
- FIFA ranking #30 is very very difficult to achieve. That would require the Azkals to improve and the other teams to stop improving. - # of international standard stadiums. Philippines is still a poor country. And we are not hosting the World Cup, so we don't need so many football stadiums. Maybe a big stadium each for Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao would be more possible.
But then, you are looking for these to happen in 2030. Several things could happen between now and 2030; let's hope for the best.

Ask the audience for some help? No? lol! I never said road maps were stupid in general! I specifically stated that YOURS was stupid because there's barely any sense of realism in it! Hell, even grandpa Wiking also just said that he thinks its stupid!! I also don't want or need to write an essay of a post. Just look at a few of things you have on there which I'll pose to you. - Top 70 by the end of the decade and top 30 by 2030?!? - It's already a major uphill task to reach the third round of WCQ by the next edition, you think we're gonna be competitive in it or even reach the fourth round?!? On top of that you think we're gonna qualify by 2026!? - Asian Cup... It's safe to say we're one of the favorites to win the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup and therefore qualify for the 2015 edition but that doesn't mean we will (it's gonna be tough), never mind qualify for three more consecutive Asian Cups after that and then to continue to outdo the previous performance (QF's by 2019, SF's by 2023, at least SF's again by 2027). Only Thailand has reached the knockout round once from ASEAN and that was in 1972!! - Reach the finals of the AFF C'ship for the next nine... NINE (9) editions in a row?!?!? LMAO! Again those are just a few and I don't need to go any further! I'm also not saying I'm an expert but one thing is for sure, I don't wear tinted glasses and neither is my head stuck in the clouds (or up my own ass?) with regards to any expectations like these!

You think the roadmap has barely a sense of realism, and yet you seriously want to change Azkals to Philippine Eagles? I don't need a friend or other readers of this forum for help on who has idiotic opinions. You're already showing it yourself!
I wrote the roadmap as what I think the PFF and Azkals should strive for. I do not expect that all of the items will happen, but I do hope they will happen. If the folks at PFF have a vision for development and progress, I surely hope they have a roadmap which they're reviewing periodically and against which they're grading themselves.

If the folks at PFF have a vision for development and progress, I surely hope they have a roadmap which they're reviewing periodically and against which they're grading themselves. That first sentence is a poor comparison! The only reason you think it's not realistic to change the MNT nickname is because you're one of them people whose head is messed up and thinks that being called street dogs is applicable and that it has so much meaning like "it reminds us where we come from" type of crap! You wrote this "roadmap" because it's what you "think" the PFF should strive for?! Oh quit bs-ing! You've been found wanting and now you're trying to save face! lol! The fact you came up with this grading report thread means it's what you EXPECT and not think they should strive for! If that was really your intent, you would've let it be and you wouldn't be grading the progress. Even without this thread, it seems like you had the mindset from the beginning that it is what you're expecting more so since all your objectives are insanely unrealistic! I also failed to mention that your "roadmap" isn't even a road map! It's a time table! It's your typical, by this time we should have done this, this and this... by this time we should have reached this and that, etc. Part of a road map would address the question "how?" Meaning, it would outline what activities are needed to achieve the objectives that have been set. Your "roadmap" doesn't have any of that! And even as a time table, as I've said and will keep stressing, it isn't realistic!! It's fantasy football stuff!! You've put those things with the mentality that development is a straight line and it isn't, especially for a country like the Philippines where there are so many issues that directly and indirectly affect football or sport general! You said, I don't need a friend or other readers of this forum for help on who has idiotic opinions. You're already showing it yourself! So who has the ridiculous opinion now?! Me or you? It's obvious and it should've been from the start and the answer ain't me!
