I don't like this news: ph.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/thepassionatefan/four-uncomfortable-truths-azkals-fans-082317664.html"Another indication of the sport's struggles: TV5 pulled the plug on Thursday UFL coverage in the first round of play. They only recently began it again. I can't blame them. For sure they aren't getting much of their investment back in terms of ad revenue." Call to arms to local football fans by Bob: "Right now league football in the Philippines is run by well-meaning, deep-pocketed entities who don't mind throwing millions into a giant black hole from where it never returns. Pinoy league football has to become sustainable, and it can't do that without you. The league is far from perfect. But it's what we have. And I can hold hand over heart and say it's an enjoyable, exciting, improving league with some incredible goals, week-in, week out. If you want the Azkals to be successful long-term, then become a UFL fan. Come to the games. Buy the jerseys. Pick a team to love. If you can't do that, pick a team to HATE and cheer against them. We'll take that." Form and join Supporter's groups guys. In the USA, MLS(starting with 10 teams) had the same struggles early on financially and commercially, with no profit during the first 10 years of their existence and some clubs having to be folded or relocated, but they are now finally becoming a commercial success with 19 teams in the league and with plans for further growth. The Philippines can do the same to, but the fans have to help the professional league grow the sport as well. In the future, the long term success of the national team will rely mostly on the development of our professional leagues, on whether they can develop academies of their own as well as improve the level of play in the league. They won't be able to do that if the fans don't support the league. Don't follow the example of many SEA and other Asian fans, who prefer to follow and support foreign teams in the EPL, La Liga or the Bundesliga, while ignoring their local leagues. I see many facebook pages of Filipino fans getting together wearing their respective European team jerseys to cheer for their favorite team, for e.g. I just saw a youtube video of Filipino Liverpool fans(I wonder if Rick Olivares was part of this group) with their jerseys, singing the Liverpool anthem YNWA today in a bar on the pinoyfootball facebook site. Do they do the same for a team in the UFL? In many ways, I can't wait until a national league is formed. The natural regional rivalries will engender genuine fan support that the UFL at this time cannot provide.

Winning the upcoming Challenge Cup is a spark needed for Philippine football in general and UFL in particular to awaken up fans' enthusiasm. . . There's no doubt the Younghusband brothers played a major role in the rise of the Azkals but I think the "Younghusband Phenomenon" has reached its peak in 2012. From thereon the fans' interest is on downward trend. To abate this we need to win the Challenge Cup otherwise the very existence of local league UFL will be in tatters.

On the part of the UFL, there should be an effort to bring the sport closer to the masses.

apparently the UFL decided to change the format, there will be 4 teams that will be relegated two division 2 and 4 teams from the division 2 will be promoted in the top flight. this decision was made to help the clubs improve the level of play. i don't like this idea. i think 2 is enough and just make the 8th placed team from the division 1 fight for a playoff spot against the 3rd ranked team from the div 2 assuming that div 1 has 10 teams
