THOMAS Dooley has agreed in principle to a two-year deal to stay on as coach of the Philippine Azkals, who will be gunning for a first AFF Suzuki Cup title when the country hosts the tournament in November. Dooley, who watched the United Football League Cup finals won by Global FC at the expense of Ceres-La Salle at Rizal Memorial Stadium last Saturday, said his contract extension will be finalized by the Philippine Football Federation this week. “We’ve had initial discussions and I’m staying for two more years,” said Dooley, who steered the Azkals to the biggest upset in history last month when they stunned North Korea, 3-2. “I always said that I wanted to stay so that’s why it was easy to come together and talk.” Dooley earned raves for steering the Azkals to impressive matches, particularly against stronger sides like Uzbekistan and Bahrain in the World Cup Qualifying. The Azkals also reached their highest ranking of No. 114 this month, regaining the top ranking among Southeast Asian countries. But the Philippine team also suffered some stinging setbacks under his reign, including the home loss to Yemen and in the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup final against Palestine in the Maldives. Dooley said the Azkals are slated to play Syria, China and Kyrgyzstan during the international window this year, before they plunge into action in the AFF Suzuki Cup, which the country is hosting for the first time. The coach said that they are targeting a first finals appearance in the Suzuki Cup, after three straight semifinal finishes, on top of qualification for the 2017 AFC Asian Cup. 21 April 2016 Dooley to remain Azkals coach for next 2 years Philippine national football team boss Dan Palami confirmed that head coach Thomas Dooley would be extending his stay with the squad for another two years. According to Palami, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) together with the team’s management has been delighted with the performance of the Azkals under Dooley. “I think the Philippine Football Federation as well as the management of the Azkals is certainly impressed with what he has done for Philippine football and for the national team,” Palami told GMA News Online. “That is the reason why we have decided to extend his contract for another two years so that he can lead us in the Asian Cup qualifiers,” he added. However, Palami said they are still accomplishing some paperwork before finalizing Dooley's new contract. “All the other conditions remain the same. We are just working on the documents to be signed but in principle and as far as we are all concerned, the show goes on,” he said. Dooley, former captain and assistant coach of the US soccer team, was appointed head coach of the Azkals in February 2014 vice Hans Michael Weiss. Palami said it was an easy decision for them to extend Dooley's contract after he steered the Azkals to a notable performance in the international stage. Dooley recently took the Azkals to a third place finish in the second round of the joint 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2018 Asian Cup qualifiers where the Nationals registered a record of three wins, a draw and four losses including an impressive final game win against North Korea, 3-2, which secured their ticket for the next round of the Asian Cup qualifiers. It was during Dooley's watch when the Philippines recorded their highest ever standing at 116 in the FIFA World Rankings for the month of April. Meanwhile, Palami said the Azkals will have two international friendlies against Syria and Kyrgyzstan as part of their preparations for the upcoming Suzuki Cup. “In June, we have a friendly in Bacolod and then we go to Kyrgyzstan. Hopefully, Syria does not cancel it just like they cancelled their friendly against Vietnam but we are hoping that it will push through. Otherwise, we will continue to look for opponents,” he concluded. — APG, GMA News - www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/563567/sports/football/dooley-to-remain-azkals-coach-for-next-2-years

16 December 2016 Azkals coach Thomas Dooley is ordered to pay a fine of USD 5.000 1. Mr. Thomas Dennis Dooley is ordered to pay a fine of USD5,000/- for violating Article 6.8 of the AFF Suzuki Cup Tournament Regulations 2016. 2. The fine shall be settle within 30 days from the date that this decision is communicated in accordance with Article 11.3 of the AFC Disciplinary Code. 3. Mr. Thomas Dennis Dooley is is informed that a repeat violation of this provision will be met with more severe punishment. www.the-afc.com/uploads/afc/files/list_of_the_afcdc_decisions_15122016.pdfArticle 6.8 Any and all form of advertising on other garments or equipment (T-shirts, track suits, jackets, wristbands etc.) or on other material and accessories (kit bags, beverage containers, plastic bottles, etc) belonging to players, goalkeepers, team officials etc. is strictly prohibited inside and outside the stadium during official training sessions and match days and during official Press Conferences I think this has to do with his tendency to wear PUMA gear(not sure if he is personally sponsored by the brand) when the official team gear is sponsored by LGR. Dooley also tends to be very informal wearing shorts and T shirts all the time even during official press conferences. __ Thanks to jonny for pointing this out in his website.

Azkals outstanding in 2016, says Dooley
DESPITE its elimination from the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup, Philippine national football team head coach Thomas Dooley considered 2016 still a good year for the Azkals. Dooley said on Thursday that the team did an outstanding performance, despite its lack of preparation, adding that he wants to focus more on their training next year. “We have tested the players when they came back from the league and the fitness level was a little bit better than the best team from Italy – the best U12 team,” he stressed. The American coach said that “if we know the team was in that horrible condition, the only way to get it done is training.” He further said that there’s no way that the Azkals will win the Suzuki Cup when he only have a couple of session to train the players. “Next year, I would like the team to have a longer period of time for their training. Teams in the league need to know that the training is not enough to compete in the high level of football. Maybe it is good enough to play in the league here, but not internationally,” Dooley stressed. Meanwhile, the Philippine Football Federation will have a new national league, which is set to kick off in March. The Philippines Football League (PFL) will feature at least six teams and will serve as the qualifying for all international competitions where clubs or national teams are involved. PFL will visit cities and provinces to further strengthen its fan base and professional football. Interested clubs have until December 31 to submit their applications

No decision yet on Dooley's contract according to Azkals manager Palami Dooley's contract expired after the Tajikistan match It was a historical night for Philippine football. Amidst the celebrations, there were still questions left unanswered. Only time can tell, but a part of these include Azkals head coach Thomas Dooley's contract, which expires after this big qualification to the Asian Cup. The former US soccer team captain took the reins in 2014 and led the Azkals to the finals of the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup, where they fell to Palestine and missed the Asian Cup berth then. However, from then on, Dooley fueled the chaos within one of the best camps that Azkals ever had in 2014 and he ended up enduring the dying popularity of the sport. Around two months after the 2014 Challenge Cup, Azkals standouts Filipino-German Stephan Schröck and Dennis Cagara admitted that their resignation from the national team was because of tensions with Dooley. Ever since he came on board the Azkals' team management, Dooley was known for experimentations in the roster – a totally different coaching style from former head coach Hans Michael Weiss. As he survived the rifts with the team, Dooley's contract was extended for another two years in 2016. This gave him another opportunity to lead the Azkals in the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup, where the Philippines co-hosted with Myanmar. To much dismay, the Azkals didn't even make it out of the group stage, with Thailand and Indonesia advancing to the knockout phase. During the pre-match press con against Tajikistan last March 26, Dooley repeated that the lackluster Suzuki Cup campaign was due to the low fitness levels of the players. "The team we tested against North Korea, the team was a little bit better [than a] U-12 team in Italy. If you were in that kind of shape, you can’t win against an adult team. It’s not a physical game or the pressure," said Dooley. The turnaround for the Dooley-led team came in 2017 when the Azkals were taking another shot for Asian Cup. The Azkals managed to clinch that Asian Cup berth and never lost in their 2019 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers run as they finished the tournament on top of Group F with 12 points off 3 wins and 3 draws. With the Azkals qualifying for the Asian Cup under his leadership, it is a question whether the management would leave behind Dooley's actions in the past or will the international coach extend his reign. Azkals team manager Dan Palami said that the decision will still come in the future and his contract would be deliberated via a "holistic" approach. "It would be unfair to judge him just based on this game. This is a big result for us, so [we] will take a holistic approach. It's difficult to make commitments when you are really happy, so we have to approach that objectively and see where we want to go," said Palami. Palami also mentioned that he will be evaluating his own role in team, whether he will be staying with the senior team or moving to the grassroots level. "After getting the team to the Asian Cup, I'll have to look for another role [in] Philippine football kasi it's been a long journey," said Palami www.rappler.com/sports/by-sport/football/199135-dooley-contract-philippine-azkals-palami

This decision will be very crucial for the Azkals.
A change in coach might result to change in tactics and playing style and possibly might affect the Azkals game.
Let's hope for the best decision.

There are rumors according to jonny posted on his site that Coach Dooley is moving to Malaysia to coach a local club. Link is in Malay Language: Thomas Dooley Dalam Radar Pasukan Liga M ? inikanbola.my/2018/04/19/thomas-dooley-dalam-radar-pasukan-liga-m/Translated via Google Translate: Since guiding Philippine national team to qualify for the Asian Cup in the UAE next year, Thomas Dooley's shares are rising. Many teams in particular from Southeast Asia want to serve as head coach. Recently, there was a source telling us that there was a team from the League of Malaysia who wanted his services. Thomas Dooley introduced himself to Southeast Asia football in 2014 when he took over as head coach of the Philippine national team. Prior to that, he became the assistant to Jurgen Klinsmann with the United States team. Under Dooley, we can see a significant increase in the Azkals team. In the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign, Dooley managed to blow the Philippines by surprise teams like Bahrain and North Korea. The Philippines managed to earn 10 points in the campaign but was not enough to take them to the next level. The Philippines's surprise is not just that. Dooley also managed to lead the Philippines into the Asian Cup next year. Not only worthy, but the Philippines also became the F group champion by overcoming the Yemen, Tajikistan and Nepal troops. This is a tremendous achievement from the Southeast Asian team. According to the source, there is a legendary team in the Malaysian League who wants to serve as head coach. Dooley's contract with the Philippine Football Association (FFF) has ended last month. So, he is now free to manage any team that offers him. It is interesting to see how the game will be carried by Dooley if he manages a team in the Malaysian League. Whether he's going to use the same game pattern when guiding the Philippines to qualify for the Asian Cup or he will use other game patterns. What do you think about the news of Thomas Dooley who is in the radar of a team in the Malaysian League? Can he have the challenge of managing the team in this difficult Liga Malaysia?
Anyway, expect a major announcement from Mr. Dan Palami soon.

Thomas Dooley wants USMNT. Interview with the hero of Usa ’94 Thomas Dooley is an icon of North American soccer. As a player he took part in two world championships with the USMNT, of which he was also captain, and in Germany he won a Bundesliga, a League Cup, a Super Cup and a UEFA Cup. After being assistant to Jürgen Klinsmann with The Yanks, Dooley led the Philippine National Team to qualify for the Asian Cup 2019. In this interview the hero of Usa ’94 spoke about his future, his career, MLS, USMNT and football development in Asia. Who would you like to be USMNT coach? Thomas Dooley. You have been leading the Philippines team (Azkals) for years, managing to qualify for the continental cup. How do you consider this experience? I am happy that the players were listen to me and believed in what I said. Focusing on the right things than we will be successful. We broke 11 records, we had a great WC qualification with 3 victories and a tie. We qualified unbeaten for Asian Cup Qualification. The experience was amazing from having 8 GK coaches in 4 years, 6 assistant coaches and no assistant coach in the last 2 years. Still we managed to be successful. I could write a book about it. The Philippines are many historically linked to the US. Could partnerships be created to bring young Filipino soccer players to the United States? There are already millions of filipinos in the US. I am starting my academy here in the Philippines and develop players for the big achievement in 2026. Do you think that among the players you have trained in the Philippines there is someone ready for Europe or for MLS? We have now some players playing in Europe first divisions. Neil Etheridge playing now in the Premier League. I told him he need to be focus on playing instead sitting in the premiership team on the bank. If he thinks he is a Premiership player , show it in a lower league and you will be gone in no time. Some maybe have a chance. Sato is playing in Romania, some others are playing in Thailand or Malaysia. Their leagues are much stronger than our here. Why are you no longer the national coach of Philippines? Would not it be better for the Federation to face the next competitions with you in command? That is a good question. I don’t really know what happen. Strange was the question right after my contract ended if I would bring Stephan Schröck back into the national team!!!! I said no I don’t see why I should bring im in. He doesn’t follow the instructions, I play’s what an whenever he wants and we never had a great or successful game with him. ln the camps where he was there we had a negative camp. I ask the federation, give me one game in the last 4 years, where we were successful when he was a part of it. They couldn’t name one. He is favorite in the media and with the fans. I think that was the reason why they didn’t want to continue. That is ok if one door closes two other will open. You don’t need to best players, you need the best TEAM to win championships. What are your future projects? Looking for a team. A team where I can bring my knowledge and experience to build another successful group. Also will start a Philippine Football Academy where we will develop Philippine football players…Dream is World Cup qualification 2026. www.mlssocceritalia.com/thomas-dooley-wants-usmnt-interview-with-the-hero-of-usa-94/I hope the Philippine Football Academy comes to fruition. Thomas has a long successful history of developing young footballers in the US. He would be a great asset for Philippine football, if he does the same for their young players.
