Araneta and Gastanes did just that, and on Tuesday at the Kabisera restaurant in BGC, part of the fruit of that encounter was revealed to the footballing media: a new artificial football pitch will be installed in typhoon-ravaged Tacloban.
Gastanes said that the pitch will measure the standard 105 by 68 meters and will be built at the cost of roughly US$500,000. The PFF is leasing the land from a landowner for just one peso a year for twenty years.
None other than Blatter himself will lead the groundbreaking on December 1. Beside the field will be the Tacloban Football Association headquarters and a PFF regional training center. Nearby in Barangay Libertad, in Palo, the AFC is funding the creation of 27 homes and the rehabilitation of a local school in an area that will be called “AFC Village.”
The groundbreaking comes a day after the AFC’s yearly meeting and awards night on November 30 in Makati Shangri-la. The pow-wow, which starts on November 23 and finishes on the 30th, marks the 60th anniversary of the confederation, which was launched here in 1954. The Philippines is one of the charter members of the organization.
Araneta claims that some glittering names from the world of football may grace the occasion.
“We cannot confirm, but David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Pele, and Diego Maradona were some of the names floated before,” said Araneta.
All the heads of the other FIFA confederations, presumably including UEFA (Europe) boss Michel Platini, were invited.
A theme song composed by Ryan Cayabyab will be sung at the awards night, and Filipino singing legends Lea Salonga and Gary Valenciano are slated to perform at the Rizal Ballroom.
Forty seven member associations of the confederation as well as AFC president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and General Secretary Dato Alex Soosay will also attend. Numerous awards, like AFC player of the year, club of the year, and coach of the year will be given in the awards night which will be beamed worldwide.
During the meetings leading up to the awards night the AFC will also decide on some details concerning the FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifying process that will begin next year. Araneta and Gastanes are suggesting two geographical zones, one in the west and another in the east, to cut down travel expenses.
There will be eight groups of five, with the group winners and four best second-placers proceeding to the next phase of qualifying and also securing berths in the 2019 Asian Cup, which has expanded to 24 sides. The remaining teams will then battle it out for the last dozen berths.
The Philippines will play a total of eight World Cup group stage qualifiers, since groups are double round-robin, with each team playing home and away. The international windows when these games will take place are set for June, August, October, and November of next year. The group phase will extend into 2016.
Araneta says that because of lucrative TV rights in that nation, all the other countries hope to be grouped with Japan.
Also mentioned in the merienda-cena with the press was the upcoming AFF Suzuki Cup Trophy Tour on Monday, November 17 at Market Market in Taguig City.
The public is invited to join fun activities like a ball-juggling contest starting at noon. There will also be a trivia contest and a trophy selfie contest. The players arrive for a meet-and-greet session with Azkals fans starting at four pm. A press conference will take place at five pm.
On Friday the Azkals play Cambodia in Rizal Memorial. It’s their last tune up before they play Laos on November 22 in the Suzuki Cup proper. Indonesia is their opponent on the 25th, followed by Vietnam on the 28th. All of the Azkals’ group matches are in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The PFF president also revealed that should the Azkals reach the semifinals of the ASEAN championship, a home game in the new Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan, is possible.
