Sorry butI'm still pessimistic with the Azkals chance to proceed to the next round. Yeah we might have guys like Schrock, Ramsay, and Palla reinforcing the Azkals. But we still don't have a dependable striker. Whether you agree with me or not regardless of how we dominate the midfield and how soild we are in defense it is the forwards/strikers who wins the game. If we cannot score, we are not worthy of winning. Phil is inconsistent and lacks clinical finishing. Not that I don't like him personally but he's definitely not our "talisman" as other claim him to be. As for Patino, we can rule him out as he is most likely not interested to play for us anyway. I really hope I'm totally wrong but who else can we rely on to for scoring goals? Unless we have other dependable attackers aside from Phil..... i dunno.... This gent has it about right. Let's stop looking at pots and FIFA rank. Let's look at ELO Ranking, which gives one a better idea of how good a club is. Uzbekistan FIFA Rank: 73, ELO Rank: 54. Bahrain's FIFA Rank 104, ELO is 90. North Korea FIFA Rank 157, ELO 98. Yemen FIFA Rank 170, ELO 166. And our Azkals? FIFA Rank 139, ELO is 137. As you see based on the ELO rankings, the Azkals have got their work cut out for them. Let us be very real here: Unless something spectacular happens, the Azkals are not going to the World Cup. Period. End of discussion. Bahrain, The Uzbeks and the Koreans will have to kill each other, as well as the Azkals sweeping Yemen and splitting with those three other sides for even a glimmer of hope of gaining a top spot. And, those three were in the AFC Asian Cup Finals in Australia. I do see the Azkals getting an Asian Cup spot. That is very doable. They would have to go 3-0-5 in my humble opinion to avoid the 12 team elimination playoff, and get torpedoed for the Asian Cup track. In the meantime, Dooley will be tooling this side for the long haul.

It's pretty much a given we're not qualifying. Anyone who thinks differently needs to put down the stuff they're smoking. This is nothing but a good learning experience and an opportunity for the professional players on this team to say they've played in World Cup qualifiers. And, yes, I agree that we can definitely qualify for an Asian Cup spot. This is our reality. Just another step towards establishing football as a major sport. It's moving along quite well ...
... I just hope the fans show up to the qualifiers. I think it'll be fairly empty. I watched former Azkals goalie coach Jorge Kuriyama, a Mexican, on Coach Hans talk show, and Kuriyama said that the stadium is really far away. I hope I can be proven wrong about the attendance.

Is anyone here claiming that the team will make the World Cup? Anyone? Why are there posts arguing that the team will never make the World Cup as if that was some sort of insightful conclusion?

Yemen is the second game and it's on 16 June. With the worsening war I doubt the football players there have football on their minds. A sad way to expect a win, but that's the most likely outcome. Here's a sample of a news story on it. It's easy to find others. link to bbc storySaudi-led coalition aircraft have dropped leaflets warning residents in a Yemeni border district to leave, as air strikes against Houthi rebels continue. Leaflets were dropped in Old Saada in Saada province, the rebels' stronghold. Houthi rebels have fired shells from Saada into Saudi Arabia in recent days, killing 10 people. But the NGO Medecins sans Frontieres, which has a team in Saada, warned people would not be able to leave the city quickly because of fuel shortages. Saudi Arabia says the offensive aims to restore Yemen's exiled president. ....

I'm not expecting the Philippines to qualify, but if by some miracle we do, then it would be a bigger "rebirth" than the one we had in 2011.
I'm actually more excited at us playing against quality opponents, our failure to organize enough "quality" friendlies leaves us fans with qualifiers and tournaments as only our basis of seeing how far football (in general, and not just the PhMNT) in the Philippines has come along.

sports.inquirer.net/181388/fil-spanish-striker-back-with-ph-azkalsPROLIFIC striker Javier Patiño, a notable absentee in the last two major tournaments of the Philippine Azkals, has made himself available for the World Cup Qualifiers starting next month. Now playing for Henan Jianye in the Chinese Super League, the 27-year-old Fil-Spanish should bolster the Azkals’ attack which has been left wanting in some of the most important matches last year. Patiño missed the AFC Challenge Cup and the AFF Suzuki Cup due to injuries last year. He also skipped the Azkals training camp in Bahrain in March, prompting coach Thomas Dooley to question his willingness to play for the country. Patiño only played under Dooley once in a friendly against Azerbaijan in March last year. But Azkals manager Dan Palami said he has already received a commitment from Patiño to play for the Azkals, who landed in a tough World Cup qualifying group that includes Bahrain, Uzbekistan, North Korea and Yemen. “He was always interested in playing for the Azkals, but only needed to make arrangements with his club in China,” said Palami. “Now that all things are cleared, he will play.” Patiño has been in scintillating form since transferring from Thailand’s Buriram United to Henan, scoring five goals in his first seven games in the Chinese league. The Azkals face Bahrain in their WCQ opener on June 11 at Philippine Sports Stadium in Bulacan. Thomas Dooley will be facing some heavy caliber coaching on the opposing bench for the upcoming AFC WC qualifiers as Bahrain just hired former Argentina national team coach Sergio Baptista last week: footballchannel.asia/2015/05/09/post3551/"Batista, who led Argentina to Olympic gold at the 2008 Games in Beijing, is expected to take charge immediately ahead of joint qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup. Bahrain, who have yet to qualify for a World Cup tournament, are grouped with Uzbekistan, Philippines, North Korea, and Yemen in what has been dubbed the “Group of Death” by some observers."
