With 2016 fast approaching, here are some of the things to expect from the new UFL season BIGGEST TRANSFER YETJason de Jong Signs for Loyola Meralco Sparks Loyola Meralco Sparks is pleased to announce the signing of Jason de Jong from Global FC. The center midfielder has won both the Cup and League in the United Football League, and was the 2014 UFL MVP. With over 50 appearances for the Philippine National Team as well, the 25-year-old is expected to bring a significant presence in the club’s midfield. “I think it’s a real step forward for us this season. I know Jason from 2010, I was lucky enough to coach him back then in the original Azkals, so I know quite a bit about him,” said head coach Simon McMenemy at De Jong’s unveiling. “When I was told he was available and he was interested in coming to Meralco, there were quite some heavy discussions surrounding whether it would be possible, whether it could happen. And now that I’ve managed to sit down and talk to Jason and discuss where he wants to be and what he wants to do, I’m incredibly pleased he’s here, and really looking forward to starting the season, and start working with him again.” De Jong’s battling style and tidy distribution bolsters a midfield that recently added the services of rising star, Arnel Amita, just a month ago. Roxy Dorlas signs with Global FCRoxy Dorlas Makes Sparks Exit For the first time in four years, Roxy Dorlas will be suiting up in the United Football League for a different club. An original member of the Loyola Meralco Sparks in 2011, the left back played an integral part in winning the UFL Cup in 2013, and the PFF Smart National Club Championship in 2015. He moves to Global FC, where he will join former Sparks Matthew and Mark Hartmann. “When I got informed that Coach Leigh Manson was interested to sign me for Global FC, I did not know how to respond. When I got to sit down and talk with coach Leigh, he only had positive things to tell me. I think that this is a new challenge in my football career and can bring me to the next level,” Dorlas said in a statement sent to OneMeralcoSports.com. “It was not easy, and it all happened so fast. I was one of the few original Sparks players still with the club, and it never came to my mind to ever play for a club other than LMSFC. Matt and Mark Hartmann made the move ahead of me, and it would be great to be playing along the same side again.” While the move will see Roxy potentially suiting up against the Sparks in the future, he looks back at his time with the club fondly, and exits with the typical modesty and grace that he displayed throughout his four years. “LMSFC gave me the opportunity to do what every football player dreams of when they are kids, to play competitive football at the highest level in the country and internationally. I will always be grateful to the club and everyone involved for believing in my capabilities and fulfilling my dream.” onemeralcosports.com/loyola-sparks/roxy-dorlas-makes-sparks-exit/

Arnel Amita signs for Loyola Meralco SparksLoyola Meralco Sparks is delighted to announce the signing of Arnel Amita from Manila Jeepney FC. 20-year-old Arnel Amita, a member of the Philippines’ recent SEA Games squad, was the clear standout in Manila Jeepney’s first season in the UFL’s First Division, and his arrival marks a return to the club he started his UFL career in. Amita’s dazzling midfield displays and goalscoring heroics in recent months has turned plenty of heads, with head coach Simon McMenemy a staunch admirer of the young prospect. “I’m really excited to have him back. He’s one of the best homegrown talents I’ve seen,” said team manager Armand Del Rosario. onemeralcosports.com/loyola-sparks/official-arnel-amita-signs-for-lmsfc/

Josh Grommen signs for StallionCAGAYAN DE ORO City — Stallions FC team owner and coach Ernie Nierras today confirmed that they have signed Australia based Filipino-Dutch defender Josh Grommen in preparation for the United Football League (UFL) season next year. “We have signed him yesterday,’’ said Nierras who is also the main benefactor and coach of the Philippine women’s football team, the Malditas. He added that he signed the Filipino-Dutch defender because he is athletic and has good football knowledge. “He has however to play the Stallion way which requires a high work rate for players,’’ he said. The former Meralco standout, Grommen is also thankful for Stallions and Nierras for giving him a one year contract. “It was my own decision to join Stallions as I have heard a lot of good things about them. They can compete against the top teams in the league. I expect great things for myself and the club this season as I believe that the team is strong,’’ he said. He is also excited to work with Nierras. “I have not met him but we talked on Skype. I really like his vision for young players and the development of football in the Philippines. I also heard a lot of great things about him, the club and the quality of coaching,’’ he added He is also hopeful that his signing for the Stallions will give him an opportunity to get spotted by Azkals coach Thomas Dolley and give him a chance of playing for the Azkals. Josh is one of the young defenders who could break into the Azkals in a short time. He is tall and athletic and has good ball vision. He can partner with Amani Aguinaldo at the central defense to replace the current aging and ailing defenders. The 19-year-old son of Dutchman Rudy Grommen and Filipina Alma Bulan has played for the Philippine U23 Philippine squad in Bangkok last March in the AFC U-23 Championship qualifying tournament. He was supposed to play for the Philippine team in the Singapore Southeast Asian Games last June but was cut before the tournament started. In two years time he will be very ripe for the next SEGames. He signed for the Loyola Meralco Sparks last year in the UFL but had to pay out his contract after leaving the club in the middle of the season. He left because his boyhood club the Brisbane Roar offered him a contract. Now, he is back in the UFL and is expected to dominate the Stallions’ defense with the come backing Simone Rota. The UFL will start their 2016 season at the end of January according to league manager Rely San Agustin. Ten teams will compete in the the 1st division while five have already confirmed their entry in the second division. Aside from the Stallions, other clubs in the 1st division are Ceres La Salle FC, Global FC, Green Archers United FC, JP Voltes FC, Kaya FC, Laos FC, Loyola FC, Manila Jeepney FC, and Pachanga Diliman FC. So far only five teams have signed up for the second division. They are Aguila FC, Forza FC, Mendiola FC, Pasargad FC, and Sigla FC (formerly Team Socceroo). The armed forces teams, Army, Navy and Airforce still have to confirm their participations in the second division. They used to be superpowers in the local leagues but have been struggling with the UFL the past years. (l.biantan@gmail.com) www.pinoyfootball.com/articles/11101732/Stallions-sign-Josh-Grommen

Chris Greatwich transitions to his new role as Kaya head coachKaya Futbol Club would like to announce the appointment of Chris Greatwich as our new head coach. Born in England in 1983, Greatwich started his remarkable football career at 11 years old, when he joined Brighton and Hove Albion. He played for the Seagulls for eight years (1995–2003) before attending university in the United States, where he played for his school teams, the Drury Panthers and the Hartwick Hawks. After graduating in 2007, he returned to England and had stints at Lewes and Bognor Regis Town. In 2009, he went back to America to work as a coach for Sonesoccer Training Academy (STA) and play for their men’s team, the Morris County Colonials, where he eventually became the coach. To further his playing career, he began representing the Philippines in international competitions as early as 2004, giving him a decade’s worth of international experience. He is perhaps most noted for his historic goal against Vietnam in the 2010 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup. In January 2013, Greatwich joined Kaya FC as a full-time player and full-time director of Kaya FC Academy. At Kaya, he demonstrated his in-depth knowledge and reading of the game as a player by effectively orchestrating the midfield and providing the creative spark that resulted in comebacks. A consummate and passionate professional, he brings the same expertise, vision, and attitude as director, ushering in significant growth and development for the academy. His coaching career had already taken off during his playing days. At 18, when he was at Brighton, he completed his FA level 2 course (UEFA “C”) and has been coaching since then. He has earned various licenses and qualifications from his time coaching at STA. During this period, he took his first men’s team, the Morris County Colonials, to the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). They won the most games in the club’s history en route to the regional semifinal berth and were also the only team to beat that year’s NPSL champions. At Kaya, Greatwich stepped into the coaching role early on. He was instrumental in leading us to the 2014 FA Charity Cup final, a notable feat and affirmation of his coaching acumen. More recently, he took the reins during the 2015 UFL Cup knockout stage, where we won the tournament, beating Ceres-La Salle on penalties in the final. After playing for three seasons at Kaya and being the interim head coach on numerous occasions, Greatwich officially transitions from player to head coach. “I think it is important that the club enjoyed some stability, and I think that I have shown in my work with the academy that I am invested in the overall development of the club. I know the management and the board have full confidence in my ability to achieve success with the team and build on what we achieved at the end of last year. The Kaya FC organization is ambitious, as am I, and I think we should be competing for silverware every year. … After winning the 2015 UFL Cup and entering the AFC Cup qualifying round, hopefully the belief is now there that we can challenge on a consistent basis,” said Greatwich. “It is with great honor that I take over as the head coach of Kaya FC. I have thoroughly enjoyed my three years as a player here, but it is now time for me to undertake a new challenge. I am incredibly excited to see what we can do in the upcoming seasons.” “The core of the squad, I have played with for a number of years, and I have coached them on an interim basis on a number of occasions, so I see the transition from player to coach to be fairly smooth.” With his distinct knowledge of strategy and passion for coaching, the transition to head coach has always been inevitable. Having established himself as a leader and always instilling in the team Kaya’s “Never say die” attitude, he is now poised to refocus that same abiding leadership while at the helm. Under his stewardship, we will continue to uphold the same values and virtues, but hungrier, more determined, and more committed to achieving our goals as we move forward. We are delighted with his appointment, and we look forward to a new season with promise and success. We have supported him as a player, and we will do the same with him as our head coach. www.kayafc.com/chris-greatwich-transitions-to-his-new-role-as-kaya-head-coach/

Sparks Bid Goodbye to 12 Players With the turn of the New Year, the upcoming United Football League season is inching ever closer, and the club’s supporters can expect a new-look Loyola Meralco Sparks to take the field. There have been 12 outgoing players so far, with the likes of Graham Caygill, Yves Ashime, and Lee Joo Young all expected to suit up elsewhere when the new campaign begins. Earlier in the offseason, the exit of long-serving Roxy Dorlas came as quite a surprise to the team’s fans, and while the head coach is expecting more eyebrows to be raised with the list of departures so far, he’s confident the transfer activity is pushing the club in the right direction. Midfielders Anthony Putrus-Schnell, Max Wright, and youngsters Charlie Beaton, Alvin Sarmiento, and Joshua Grommen also have made exits, with forwards Brad Grayson and Napo Bustillo, and goalkeeper Saba Garmaroudi completing the list of departures. onemeralcosports.com/loyola-sparks/sparks-bid-goodbye-to-12-players/

Too bad we are not hearing any news or atleast rumors from UFL or any other sources. Well, I've been bored lately so I checked on some UFL players and found out some transfers to add: Alvin Sarmiento (ex LMSFC) to GAU Alvaro (Spain) to LMSFC (accdg to. Joaco's Tweet) Alvaro Alonso (Spanish from Manila Jeepney) to GAU FC Adrian Gallardo (Spain) is back with Ceres A serbian player to Global FC (via Misagh IG post)
Obviously, a massive changes is happening to teams like LMSFC who release 12 players, Stallion FC who's very vocal with their foreign acquisition since late last year. Kaya FC had 4 or 5 new signings though we don't know who left. GAU FC probably had a major build-up too, saw some unfamiliar faces in their charity visits. Pachanga-Diliman has no update. Well, it's bad for all UFL fans. No update from the league itself. Only few teams are making some noise. How can you sell a product if you can't bring it to the public? IMO, UFL need to address this. Where is the marketing team? Is there any? Few weeks left and teams are doing the pre-season workout but we don't hear anything from most of the teams even in social media. UFL, IT IS FREE, FB is free, Tweeter is free! Wake up!

i got some solid rumors 1 of our players who is based in europe will move for 6 mnths to play local. I heard that one too... Well, Kevin Ingreso (A Euro-based azkals) is with Ceres... LUke Woodland I believe left his current team. Schrock has given a time to find a new team by his current team. But To be honest, it is not a good decision for him to play in the UFL if ever. His ratings will fall and probably his market value as well. If he choses to play in the UFL, that's good for the league. But for me, there are options out there money wise and a competitive league. Why not try MLS in the US?

United Football League The country's highest-level league will have 12 teams this year. They first play in the Cup that begins on February 6 and ends in April. The Cup will be a single round-robin of two groups of 6, then quarterfinals, semifinals, and a final match. The League is slated to begin on April 21 and will be a pure double round-robin league, (without playoffs), involving the 12 sides, who are now in one division. No more two tiers as in previous seasons. It should finish by late September. The league is reverting to having one competition after another, instead of running them concurrently as in most other footballing nations. I think that in our situation, this is a good idea. Last year, they had the first round of the League, then the group stage of the Cup, then the second round of the League, then the Cup playoffs. Not very easy for new fans to follow. As of the moment the teams who have confirmed for 2016 are Ceres, Kaya, Loyola, Green Archers United, Global, JP Voltes, Laos, Pachanga, Forza, Agila, and Stallion. The twelfth team has not yet been set but it's likely either Nomads, Pasargad, or Navy Fleet Marine. These teams have to play in both the Cup and the League as well as field squads in the UFL Youth competitions over the summer. This has been mandated by the PFF, said UFL General Manager Rely San Agustin. There will be no more guest teams who play only in the Cup but not the League. San Agustin says that 12 clubs is the maximum the league can accommodate, considering how much time they have this year. They want to allocate the end of the year to the Azkals for Suzuki Cup preparations. Just like last year, the League champ will get an outright berth into the group stage of the 2017 AFC Cup while the Cup winner gets a playoff slot for a chance at a group stage spot. San Agustin said a short invitational “Super Cup” involving the League and Cup champs, plus maybe a team from abroad, could take place in October. An all-star weekend is also being planned. Last year there were two games: the Iloilo-Negros Occidental all-star game and a clash between the Philippines and the Rest of the World. Another big change for the UFL will be the reduction of the foreigner limit to just 4 on the field instead of 5. One of the 4 foreigners will also have to be Asian. This is in line with AFC guidelines for the AFC Cup and AFC Champions League. San Agustin said that in a squad of 25 players, a club may have more than 4 foreigners. But in its match day list of 18 (11 starters and 7 substitutes), there can only be 4, including the Asian import. The UFL will be playing its matches at Rizal Memorial on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Aksyon TV will remain as the league's broadcaster for this season. This is meant to be a transitional year for Filipino club football since the national league is planned to begin in 2017 www.rappler.com/sports/by-sport/football/118879-what-to-expect-philippine-football-2016?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=referral&utm_medium=share_barNo Division 2 this season.
