After enduring a challenging two-game assignment in North Korea and Bahrain, the Philippine Azkals relish the opportunity to see friendly faces again on the familiar grounds of Manila for their upcoming Fifa World Cup qualifiers match against Yemen. “We always look forward to playing in Manila,” said veteran defender Rob Gier. The Azkals will face the Yemenis on Nov. 12 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in a home outing they hope to hurdle to try to stay alive in Group H of the WCQ. Phl XI is currently on third spot with seven points behind North Korea’s 13 and Uzbekistan’s nine after their tough twin outings on the road last month. The Pinoy booters held North Korea to gutsy 0-0 draw in Pyongyang but failed to sustain the charge and blew a chance to take second spot as they yielded a 0-2 defeat to Bahrain in Manama. “We got to deal with this result and face the near impossible task of trying to get nine points in our last three games to get ourselves a chance (to earn a berth to the third round of the qualifiers),” said team manager Dan Palami after the stinging defeat in Bahrain. Aside from Yemen, whom the Azkals outclassed (2-0) the first time around in Doha, Qatar, the Pinoys will also be up for a second meeting with North Korea in Manila and Uzbekistan in Tashkent in March 2016 to end group hostilities. Meanwhile, to prepare for the Yemenis, management has set a nine-day training camp beginning today. The Azkals will spend the first seven days of buildup at McKinley Hill Stadium before moving to Rizal Memorial on Nov. 10. www.philstar.com/sports/2015/11/03/1517833/azkals-seek-redemption-home

I'm expecting this to be an easy game, with the opponent being not so strong and the Azkals playing at home, so the biggest issue here will be overconfidence on the side of the Azkals. I hope to see at least couple of goals by the Azkals ...

The Azkals will be playing without Phil and Luke. Phil serving his suspension and Luke staying for his new club. With Patino being available, who will replace Phil? I hope Rob is healthy and fit for this match. But my guess is Amani will start as CB together with Jerry and Daisuke. Just hoping coach TD will start Misagh instead of Patrick. This is ou chance to cut our GD if we could score more goals. Hope the boys are fit and sharp come game time

Limpag: Azkals Need Morale Boost vs. YemenWednesday, November 04, 2015 By MIKE T. LIMPAG FAIR PLAY THE Philippines will resume its campaign in the Fifa World Cup against Yemen at home on Nov. 12, needing a healthy win to make sure its remaining two matches next year still matter. At third with seven points in five games, the Azkals need a wide margin against Yemen, to at least get our minus three in goal difference back to the positive side. At this point, I don’t think targeting for a top finish in Group H is a realistic goal, so we have to aim for second spot and hope we will be one of the four best second place finishers among the eight groups and make it to the next round. Currently sitting at second place is Uzbekistan, which has nine points in four games and a healthy seven-goal difference thanks to its 5-1 win over the Philippines and 4-0 rout of Bahrian. It will host group leader North Korea on Nov. 12. A win by the Koreans, and a victory by us, would get us to temporary second place, before next year’s all too crucial matches against Uzbekistan and against North Korea at home. Yes, two matches for us next weekend and let’s pray for a victory in both. Us against Yemen, and the North Koreans, whom we held to a 0-0 draw, against Uzbekistan. So, against Yemen on Nov. 12, we need every one at the Rizal Memorial Stadium to help boost the morale of the team that hasn’t scored since Stephen Schrock sent in that curler against Uzbekistan last Sept. 8. Heck, even the much despised NAIA screening personnel are welcome, as long as they don’t plant anything at the stands. The Flying Winger's preview of the Philippines-Yemen game."It's a must-win game," said Coach Thomas Dooley. And no doubt about it, the Yemen game is one. A win would keep our (very slim) qualification hope alive, depending on the results of North Korea and Uzbekistan, but dropping points will almost certainly mean elimination. The Philippines takes on Yemen on Thursday, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, on paper an easy clash for the Azkals. Yemen have no points from five games, have scored no goals, and have a goal difference of -11, but went to Pyongyang, a highly intimidating environment, where group favourites Uzbekistan lost to DPR Korea, and battled to lose only 1-0, while also going to Uzbekistan's home in Tashkent... Azkals–Yemen Preview: Still So Much to Play ForMinus Phil Younghusband, the Azkals face Yemen on Thursday. The World Cup dream is fading but the team will have plenty of motivation to achieve victory.Bob Guerrero Published 2:15 PM, November 10, 2015 Updated 2:15 PM, November 10, 2015 Philippines vs Yemen FIFA World Cup and AFC Asian Cup joint qualifier 8:00 pm Kickoff, Thursday, November 12 Rizal Memorial Football Stadium LIVE coverage on ABS-CBN Sports + Action starting at 7:30 pm The latest installation of what has been a rollercoaster qualifying campaign comes on Thursday, November 12, with an Azkal side that is looking to bounce back from recent setbacks against Yemen. Unlike the first two home qualifiers that took place in the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bulacan, the match will be on the carpet in Rizal Memorial. PFF Secretary-General Ed Gastanes told me that we are allowed only one switch of venue for the campaign, so the Korea DPR home game in March will definitely also be in Rizal. A meager one-point haul from the October road trip to North Korea and Bahrain leaves the Philippines in third in the 5-team Group H with 7 points, one more than Bahrain and two less than second-place Uzbekistan. Unbeaten Korea DPR, who the Philippines battled to a goalless stalemate in Pyongyang, are sitting pretty atop the table with 13 points. Only the group champions and the best 4 second-placers in the 8 groups book their passage to the subsequent qualifying round for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Thus, pip the outlook is grim for the Philippines. To pip North Korea for the top spot the Philippines must run the table, defeating Yemen on Thursday and then taking the maximum 6 points from games in March versus Korea and Uzbekistan. Plus the North Asians must lose their last 3 matches, (or lose two and draw one), and Uzbekistan's results must also go our way. Although the Chollima, (as North Korea are known), play Uzbekistan on Thursday, they also still have a game against winless, point-less, and goal-less Yemen in March before playing the Azkals in the last game. A win in any of those matches and the Philippines cannot top the group. Getting one of the top 4 second-placer slots is also a tall order. The Pinoys have a -3 goal difference. Among all the current third-placers, only Vietnam has a GD that bad. All the second placers are positive in that column. So if the Philippines wishes to slip into the top half of the group bridesmaids, it should ideally win their next 3 matches by exceedingly large margins, then hope that enough second placers in the 7 other groups suddenly forget how to play football until March. So it is unlikely we can continue our march to Russia. Fortunately, there is a second prize. These qualifying groups are also joint qualifiers for the AFC Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates in 2019. The teams who make the next round of World Cup qualifying also punch their tickets directly to the Asian Cup final stage. Then the bottom 4 runners-up, all 8 third-placers, and the best 4 fourth-placers all qualify for the next round of Asian Cup qualification in 2017. (I hope you are following this, I know it's not all that simple.) That next phase for the Asian competition will have a double-round robin format with teams grouped in groups of 4, so 6 games. The 4 worst fourth-placers and the 8 group cellar-dwellers must go into a play-off phase in 2016 to get to that aforementioned next qualification phase for the Asian Cup. The Philippines definitely does not want to slide into that quagmire. Grabbing the express ticket to the round-robin in 2017 is much more palatable. So what does this all mean? It means we have to go for the win on Thursday. Yes, Yemen is languishing at the bottom of the table. Yes, they have yet to score a goal. But no, coach Thomas Dooley and his team cannot take them lightly, even though they did beat them in Qatar last June, 2-0. A win or draw against Yemen means it will be mathematically impossible for them to place higher than us in the final standings. A win also strengthens our position in third over Bahrain, who play the Koreans on November 17. The Yemenis played North Korea tough last month, only falling 1-0 in Pyongyang. In September, they also frustrated the Uzbeks in Tashkent before succumbing to them by the same score. This is not a bad team, they are just stuck in very bad circumstances. The country has been in a 3-cornered civil war since March, with thousands dead, many of whom are civilians, and much of the country devastated. While most of the Yemeni team play in Yemen's football league, which has probably been on hiatus because of the conflict, they have a midfielder, Fuad Al-Omaisi, who plies his trade in Saudi Arabia; and a forward, Ayman Al-Hagri, who suits up in the Bahraini second tier. Muller will start at goalkeeper sports.inquirer.net/198598/muller-to-start-at-goalkeeper-for-azkals-vs-yemen#ixzz3rBi2KgbWRoland Muller will get the start at goalkeeper when the Philippine Azkals battle Yemen on Thursday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum. Azkals coach Thomas Dooley said on Wednesday that Muller will start in lieu of Neil Etheridge, who was hampered by a leg injury during the training camp. “I don’t want to take any risk,” Dooley said on Wednesday at the prematch press conference at Manila Hotel. “Roland had an excellent training session yesterday. He did an excellent job. He looked sharp, very quick. The way that I saw him in the Challenge Cup, he was outstanding over there.” Etheridge had his first practice with the team on Tuesday, but was limited in his time on the pitch. Dooley said, “He’s not 100-percent, and it’s still unknown if it holds for the game or not. So for me, it’s a reason that he’s not going to play.” This would be the first time in the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers that Etheridge won’t be the last line of defense for the Azkals.
