Over at the Bicol University Old Pitch, Davraa's(DAVAO Region Athletic Association) elementary booters survived a 4-3 win via penalty shootout over Negros Island Region Athletic Association (Niraa) in Friday's semifinals match.
Sebastian Rendon broke the ice in the 14th minute of the first half to give Davraa a 1-0 edge but a Niraa striker hit a goal in the second half to equalize the game, 1-1, at the end of regulation.
As a standard Palaro rule, no extra time was given. Thus, the penalty shootout followed. Davraa's James Paje sealed a goal but Niraa forced another deadlock at 1-all. Dabawenyos Simon Guino-o and Raphael Balan followed up with back-to-back goals but Niraa countered anew for a 3-all standoff. In the sudden death though, Naz Pascual saved the day for Davraa as Niraa's player missed his mark.
Davraa battles Western Visayas in the championship game set at 7 a.m. Saturday, April 16.
Coach Rey Henry "Ewee" De Leon, in a text interview yesterday, said: "We already have a game plan but it is a secret for now. Hopefully we can defeat them again."
In the eliminations, Davraa escaped past Western Visayas, 2-1.
In the quarterfinals, Davraa leaned on Balan, Jasper Lim and Pascual to outlast Zamboanga Peninsula, 3-2, Thursday afternoon.
Lim, in a Facebook chat, said he's nervous about their finals game. He, however, added: "Sabi naman ni coach kayang-kaya namin ang kalaban bukas."
Lim was among the five Davraa kickers picked for the semis penalty shootout. "I was the second one, unfortunately, I missed the penalty. But we were able to catch up and win the game."
The three-time Palaro campaigner is competing in his last Palaro in the elementary division. He said that reaching the finals is the best performance a Davraa elementary football team has ever accomplished in his three years.
Weng Sasuman assisted De Leon in Davraa's unbeaten 6-0 run so far in the Palaro that will close Saturday afternoon.
