Ceres Negros battles Tajik league side Istiklol FC in AFC Cup Inter Zone playoffs in Dushanbe CERES Negros ventures into uncharted territory as it takes on Istiklol FC in the first leg of the AFC Cup Inter Zone Playoffs on Tuesday in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The Busmen are coming off an emotional tie in the Zonal finals against Home United where they overcame a 1-2 result in Singapore by blanking the Defenders, 2-0, in Panaad. Ceres is the first Philippine club to be crowned Asean champions. But head Risto Vidakovic isn't satisfied at all. "This is the first time maybe that one Filipino club reached this part of the competition. So it’s something historical what we did until now," said Vidakovic in the pre-match press conference. "I think we cannot stop now so we have to keep going. we have to compete and if we reach the semifinals then I think it’s a big deal for us," he added. Vidakovic says that he has witnessed how this club plays, but can't seem to size them up considering the limited exposure of their domestic league. "We expect always tough games. We saw a lot of games from Istiklol but it’s not easy to know actually how strong they are because we dont know how strong is the league," he continued. "But if they reach this part of competition I suppose that they are very strong. So we will do our best we try to play better than we can. We will try to reach a better result tomorrow." The Philippine side will look to get a better result this time after losing away matches to JDT and Home United. Saw their lineup and noticed that around a dozen of Istiklol's players were in the Tajik NT who lost 4-3 against the Azkals last June. Two of their forwards scored against us: M. Dzhalilov and Vasiev. Woodland and Munoz were introduced in the pitch when the score was 3-1. Good thing is, they haven't played against Schrock and a 100% fit Manu.

Filipino club Ceres Negros continue to go from strength to strength on the continent, surpassing last year’s Round of 16 exit with the ASEAN Zone crown after they defeated Singapore’s Home United a fortnight ago in the ASEAN Zone final. The Bacolod-based club squeezed into the 2017 AFC Cup knockout stages ahead of Vietnam’s Hanoi FC and then eliminated 2015 winners Johor Darul Ta’zim on away goals in the ASEAN Zone semi-finals, before a famous 3-2 aggregate win over Home United. Spanish attackers Bienvenido Marañón and Fernando Rodríguez have been a big part of their prolific forward line, but the midfield is also a source of significant strength, loaded with game-changers including stand-out duo Iain Ramsay and Stephan Schrock. www.the-afc.com/afc-cup-2017/afc-cup-inter-zone-semi-final-preview-fc-istiklol-v-ceres-negros

FT Istiqlol 4-0 Ceres
It is going to be very hard for Ceres FC to come back from a 4-0 deficit in their home leg.

Last Tuesday Apr. 22 was not a good day for Philippine football. No intention of blaming anybody and not to be too negative, here's my simplistic summary of the events: a. Ceres Negros FC are mostly composed of PMNT (Azkals) players, who were foreign trained. Not part of the youth program through our universities and colleges. b. The U22 (both men and women teams) are mostly players from our universities and colleges.
Their combined showing last Tuesday does not look good for Philippine football in general and will give those Manileños more fuel to resent football as a sport for the Filipinos worth watching. Some say that they will rather watch volleyball.
This is my opinion and I hope this will change. Sept 5th. PMNT against Yemen will make or break this analysis.

Updating the latest scores on Filipino football is disheartening. Ceres Negros was just eliminated on aggregate 1-5 against FC Istiklol. The senior PMNT was tied by Yemen in Bacolod, and may have problems next game in Doha, Qatar. The U18 was massacred in Myanmar at -22 GDs, lost all 4 games of the group. The outcome of the U15s, U23s, and U22 (Sea Games) games is just as worst. The youth coaches (Chiefy, Maro, Aberasturi) still blame the players that they have selected for losing, i.e. as not fit, lacking talent and experiences. They believed that they have done their job, a total BS! They should be fired NOW.

AFC 2nd leg FT Ceres 1-1(1-5 aggregate) Istiklol Istiklol advances to the next round. Good effort by Ceres as they dominated most of the stats, but ultimately it wasn't enough. Ceres’ brave AFC Cup run ended by Istiklol www.foxsportsasia.com/football/asian-football/afc-cup/ceres-brave-afc-cup-run-ended-istiklol/ CERES-NEGROS: Roland Muller, Kota Kawase, Carli de Murga (Joshua Grommen 90’), Manuel Herrera (Jeffrey Christiaens 57’), OJ Porteria, Manny Ott, Kevin Ingreso, Iain Ramsay, Stephan Schrock, Fernando Rodriguez (Omid Nazari 65’), Bienvenido Maranon. Ceres lost to a better team. No shame in that as they tried their best. It is still the first time that a Philippine team has reached this stage of the AFC Cup. Hopefully we do better next time.

Meanwhile, I am happy that Ceres got this far, compared to their previous effort last time. Back to the drawing board, and who knows, the breaks may lead their way this time.
