Well I didn't know Lacrosse was played in the Philippines, but apparently they are sending a team to the 2018 Federation of International Lacrosse’s Men’s Lacrosse World Championship in Israel.
Lacrosse is a team sport similar to football, ice hockey or field hockey employing a lacrosse stick and a ball, on a field of grass where the goal is to score goals against a goaltender defending a small goal. It is a game that has its cultural roots with the North American natives(Iroqouis tribe) but modernized with rules like ice hockey(which is claimed to also have native American Indian antecedents) on grass.
It was popularized initially in the Northeastern United States but has been adopted nationwide after colleges included it as part of its roster of sports competition and a professional league was formed. It is now played in many countries all over the world. It is still considered a minor sport in the US but is gaining in popularity especially with young people. It is not yet an Olympic sport.
Men’s lacrosse: Carthage’s Ventiquattro to coach Philippines team in 2018
Carthage boys lacrosse coach Kirk Ventiquattro has accepted a position to coach the Philippines team in the 2018 Federation of International Lacrosse’s Men’s Lacrosse World Championship in Israel.
“In accepting the job it was understood and agreed upon that it would not affect my coaching of varsity lacrosse at Carthage,” said Ventiquattro, who has coached varsity lacrosse at Carthage since 1989 after founding the program there. “I would not have accepted otherwise.”
Ventiquattro hopes that his son Tony will serve on the Philippines team coaching staff and his son Mario will be trying out for the team.
“My family and I are very excited for this opportunity,” Kirk Ventiquattro said. “ ... My wife Carmelita and I hope to visit the Philippines in the near future.”
Ventiquattro continued: “Our connection to the Philippines is strong as my wife’s mom Carmen who was born in Manila and came to the United States after marrying my father-in-law James while he was serving as a U.S. serviceman stationed in the Philippines.”
The team will be chosen next month and will be comprised of 23 players.
Nineteen of those players must possesses Philippine passports and up to four can be players with at least one grandparent having been born in the Philippines, Ventiquattro added.
The world championship event, which will feature 50 participating countries and over 2,000 athletes, will take place July 12-21 next summer in the city of Netanya, Israel.
