Why do our players retire from international football duty at such a young age? Christiaens is just 26, for example. Is this common in world football? Usually the cut-off (desired, if you prefer) age for retirement in the national teams is in the early 30s. Some earlier, like Cantona who retired in his peak at 30. Shearer at 29. Nakata was 29 when he left the Japanese NT. Some retire twice before making up their minds. Zidane intially retired in 2004 but came out of it just in time for the 2006 World Cup, only to officially say goodbye to Les Bleus after their final loss vs Italy. Probably the youngest I know of is Ghana's Kevin-Prince Boateng, at 24. His reason seems to be going around 'preserving his club career' at Milan. But that's not the case with some of the Azkals. Christiaens, Roland Muller (28) and Jason De Jong (26) have the same reason: FAMILY. International football has its perks, sure. You could fly out to countries you've never been to. Sometimes you get to meet players who you looked up to in your youth. But maybe when you have your own family, with kid/s as young as three, long travels and trainings outside the country look emotionally difficult. Maybe. In the case of Schrock and Cagara who was only 29 when he retired from the NT, there seem to have a falling out with the coach. The good thing with international retirement is that you can come out of it, that is, if you're willing to be called up.

Thanks for the response, pilferpatchy. Appreciate it. The upside of these recent retirements though is that we're now handing over great opportunities to newer talent.

Dooley Braces for Yemen Match Sep 03, 2017 Playing in their third match of the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Qualifiers, Philippine Men’s National Team head coach Thomas Dooley expects a tough Yemen side that will face them on 5 September 2017 at the Pana-ad Park and Football Stadium. The Azkals arrived in Bacolod last Monday to prepare for the match against Yemen, which are two points behind in Group F after the two matches. “Our form is everything but perfect,” said Dooley noting on the absences of key players such as Javier Patiño, Amani Aguinaldo, and Kenshiro Daniels due to injury, and Daisuke Sato due to card accumulations. Dooley will field 23 players for the match. Four of the players called up in the squad are new to the team in Dylan De Bruycker, Harry Föll, Joshua Grommen, and Tyler Matas. “I hope they are team players and give everything they have,” added Dooley. “Those are future players and you never know how they do, so I hope we can find one or 2 more surprises.” In their past meetings with Yemen during the Joint Preliminary Round 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia – Asian Qualifiers / AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Qualifiers, the Philippines won 2-0 away from home last June 2015 but lost the home match, 0-1, last November 2015. Dooley is hoping that the run of form they have from the wins over Nepal and Tajikistan will continue against Yemen. “Yemen is much better than the last time and it will take everything from us to beat the team,” continued Dooley. “We need to finish our chances and be focused for the whole match.” pff.org.ph/2017/09/03/dooley-braces-yemen-match/

The good thing with international retirement is that you can come out of it, that is, if you're willing to be called up. Perfect example is Paul Mulders. He quielty announced his retirement but after transferring to Global he seems to be the best local player aside from Misagh earning him consecutive MOTM honors on their recent stint at the AFC Cup. He is called up again starting from last years Suzuki Cup and until now he is included in the roster. Being less on the spotlight in a way have worked for him postively.

The Flying Winger's take on tomorrow's match: Philippines vs Yemen: Match PreviewThe Azkals take on Yemen in Bacolod City, tomorrow night, September 5, in a clash at the top of Group F. Both teams are in a healthy position coming into the game, the Philippines on six points following 4-1 and 4-3 wins against Nepal and Tajikistan, respectively. Yemen are also undefeated, having beaten Tajikistan 2-1 in Doha before a 0-0 draw away to Nepal in Kathmandu. A Philippines win would still keep both sides in the top two qualification slots, barring a large Nepal win against Tajikistan. If Yemen win, they leapfrog the Philippines to the top spot in the group. A draw would maintain the top two. It’s not exactly a must-win, for either team, but as Thomas Dooley stated, “The players will fight from the first to the last minute.” CONTINUED AT: theflyingwinger.wordpress.com/2017/09/04/philippines-vs-yemen-match-preview-2/

I read that Tyler Matas got injured( via facebook), so he probably won't be able to play for the Azkals tomorrow.
FC Meralco Manila 2 hrs · Bacolod City, Philippines ·
A few minor knocks means Tyler Matas won't be in action for the Azkals tomorrow but we are so proud of his selection for the national team. If all goes well he should be good to go for PFL action very soon!

I read that Tyler Matas got injured( via facebook), so he might not be able to play if it serious. Matas is a full back right? Hmmm. I'm quiet confident with our backline tomorrow. Villanueva, Woodland, Carlie and even Grommen could play centerbacks. Palla will play the leftback while Munoz rightback. These back four could give Yemen some hell of defending.

Yes Matas would have been an option at either fullback position. It looks promising(especially if Grommen performs as well as he did with the U22) but we will see. The more options the better. If they do a good job, this will be great moving forward as central defence has been a weakness(and that includes Woodland) in the past. Palla can start at left back.

Not a disaster, but disappointing. We should be putting away teams like this. This is a home game, we've had months to prepare, and still we can't put this team away. Granted it wasn't our absolutely best team especially since Patino did not play, but the lineup was pretty good.
Good thing we still have the Younghusband brothers. They produce when we most need it. That's the mark of good, mentally tough players.
