Azkals vs Vietnam in the semis! It seems that Viets lose their confidence whenever they face the Azkals. Last three games against Vietnam, Azkals have won twice. Vietnam team has youth and speed on their side as 15 players are below 23 years old as compared to only 4 players for the Philippines. However, Azkal players being older equates to more experience in local and international competitions. Let's see if the Viets can score more goals or maintain their clean sheets against the Azkals.

Playing Vietnam is not going to be easy. Many of the players from Vietnam's young squad has gained a lot of experience making it to the final of the AFC U23 Championship and the semifinals of the Asian Games(also U-23) this year.
Vietnam's coach Park Hang Seo is no slouch either helping guide the U23 Vietnam team to their best ever finishes this year and serving as assistant coach to Guus Hiddink during the 2002 World Cup when South Korea finished 4th.

5 best (Azkals) passers in the group stage according to Fox SportsDaisuke Sato, 100 completed passes, 78% success rate Carli de Murga, 124 completed passes, 81% success Martin Steuble, 139 completed passes, 81% success Manny Ott, 152 completed passes, 85% success John Patrick Strauss, 164 completed passes, 82% success Compare this to Vietnam's top two Quang Hai Nguyen #19, MF, most passes in the team at 221, with 84% completion rate Ngoc Hai Que #3, DF, second most passes at 169, with 79% pass completion rate It looks like much of the passing goes through Quang Hai Nguyen, so he will have to be neutralized for the Azkals to have a better chance. We have Manny Ott, whose 152 passes came through 3 games only (compared to 4 for others), so a quick calculation says that Manny Ott would have about 200 passes had he played similarly in an additional game. Point is, passing from #19 needs to be disrupted, and Manny Ott needs to have a stellar game as holding and passing midfielder.

Will there be change of 23 man line-up?
Etheridge, Palla, Woodland, Sato and Strauss are now left the team due to club commitments and injury.
Time for Amani to shine perhaps to replace Sato?

But Vietnam midfield wasn't really tested well in Group A. I'm not belittling Cambodia and Laos but the only time Vietnam has to battle it out in the middle was against Myanmar. Against Malaysia, VIE central midfielders were given free roam as MAS played from the wings instead. The Viet's last five goals were scored from the middle. Three of them from counter-attacks. Unlike the teams in Group B, they concentrate NOT on holding the ball slow but on quick passes forward, and here the three Nguyens figure: Quang Hai (19) to Anh Duc (11) or either to the left or to Cong Phuong (14) on the right flank.

Let us be very real: We need to win the first leg, period. Hanoi is a very tough place to play. The Vietnamese still have nightmares from the Azkals humiliating them in 2010. Nguyan needs to be corralled. When he scores, Vietnam wins. Since his debut for the Vietnamese Senior side, he has five goals, three of them Match winners. Down to 18 players, we need a lot of help when we play Thailand (Malaysia is not going to advance) in the finals. And, we need to stay disciplined when we play Bietnam.

Some observations: we had some good runs forward. We were better in the first half. Tull is a revelation at RB and I think Schrock played the best here. We were dominated after that second goal. Vietnamese players rarely dribble when they go forward.
We really need more energy in the final third, a striker who could run in and out to muddle the opposing defense and make himself or the others open. The team seems to let the passer solve this problem himself instead of his teammates creating the options for him. There are a couple of moments where JYH (or was it PYH?) was standing right there at the edge of the box clearly offside and just waiting for the ball. Reichelt is alright but he plays more like a winger.
Best thing that the team could do is make the defense quicker and more organized and hope for two miraculously unanswered goals in My Dinh.
