Nice fair comments from some of the Brisbane fans on social media especially since I never got to see the match. Ceres did not just come to Australia and park the bus. They came to play enterprising football.
Ross Alistair Your use of the word ‘Team’ is inappropriate for the Roar. At best we are a misfit/unfit collection of mostly old prima dona has-beens. And the opposition were not ‘sub par’ in my opinion. Their energy teamwork and technical skill was much better than the Roar. My god, they are only just in their pre-season (remember Roar in pre season losing 5-1 against Victory - embarrassing). And they are playing away from home against a so called bigger club. Pretty impressive really and it was insulting for you to call them sub standard.
Cathal Donnelly Hardly a sub par team. Very good team technically and outplayed roar for almost all of the game

They next face Chinese Super League Club Tianjin Quanjian in the Playoff Round. I never thought that Brisbane losing against Ceres could generate a shock this big on Twitter. Both Roar supporters and A-League fans condemning the team. More importantly, the loss opened a can of issues the Brisbane side has been on. Bad management maybe and overconfidence. I've read that the club was so confident that they processed their passports early for the playoff round in China. Anyway, it's nice to see Nazari on the starter list and on the goals. How I wish there's at least a highlights video.

www.fourfourtwo.com.au/news/acl-brisbane-roar-v-ceres-negros-player-ratings-481663/page0It’s Asian Champions League season and it was welcome back to the qualification stage for Brisbane Roar as they faced Filipino League Champions Ceres-Negros, competing in their first ever ACL campaign. John Aloisi named his strongest side available with Brett Holman a welcome sight back into the starting line-up whilst Ceres who are still in pre-season, named a well travelled side who had varying levels of experience across Asia and Europe. They had done a lot of travel of late too, with their last qualifier in Myanmar going into extra-time before arriving in Australia via their home country. In a first ever Roar professional fixture at the QSAC, it was Brisbane who found themselves largely on the backfoot in the opening stages. Ceres-Negros pressed high and played with significant calm for a side two weeks into their pre-season. After Brisbane took the lead it was all Ceres-Negros who came back with three goals of their own, before a late consolation goal to Eric Bautheac meant the final score was 2-3. CERES-NEGROS Toni Doblas – 7 The journeyman shot-stopper didn’t have a lot to deal with but punched away a lot of attempts to keep the ball away from the box. Junior Munoz – 6.5 Stuck on the right and had a challenge in Fahid Ben Khalfallah. Held his own and was subbed late in the game. Manuel ‘Super’ Herrera – 7 Key interception to stop a wicked cross from Franjic. Headed down to Maranon who finished the job from a late first half corner. Got involved in a fracas with Franjic but overall had a great game. Carlos de Murga – 7.5 The Captain led by example and stopped many a Brisbane attack. He was strong, confident and assured. Jeffrey Christiaens – 6 The left back provided Mike Ott with plenty of ball and as the game went on he got further forward to join in attack. Kevin Ingreso – 7 Started with a strong challenge that went unpunished. Later delivered the corner that sealed the win for his side after Omid Nazari banged it in for their third. Mike Ott – 7.5 The diminutive midfielder troubled the Roar defence and eventually laid off a lovely inside ball to Maranon to put the visitors ahead. Stephan Schrock – 8.5 Broke down the right in good early runs and showed up some opposition defenders. Popped up on the left and put it on a plate for Nazari to tap in but he couldn’t get anything on it. A fantastic overall performance, would not be out of place in higher-reputation leagues. Bienvenido Maranon – 8.5 Golden boot in the league in the Philippines last season and got a lot of the ball in the early stages before it fell to him from a Super (the player) header. Made no mistake and put the ball over the line to draw his side level. His highlight though was the magnificent goal curled around Jamie Young and into the corner of the goal to put Ceres up 2-1. Subbed in the dying stages for a well earnt rest. OJ Porteria – 6.5 Pressed high and hard, forced a lot of mistakes from the opposition holding midfielders but didn’t get many chances on the ball. Omid Nazari – 7 Got free of the defence and should have tapped in after 17 minutes but he was unable to connect with Schrock’s through ball. Made up for it when he finished off a sloppy Roar clearance and booked his side a spot in the next round of qualifying versus Tianjin Quanjian. SUBS Takumi Uesato – N/A Brought on with five minutes to go. Not enough time to give a fair score Sean Kane – N/A Not enough time to give a fair score ____ Anybody know why Manny Ott didn't play. Is he injured?

Ceres-Negros FC made history Tuesday night when they stunned Brisbane Roar with a 3-2 win in the QSAC Stadium in Queensland Australia. Bienvenido Maranon scored a brace while Omid Nazari scored another for the visitors while Massimo Maccarone and Eric Bautheac converted for the home squad. It was an even start for both squads as they created plenty of half chances in front of each others goal. Roar were the first to convert in the 35th minute after well placed ball from Brett Holman off a counter saw Maccarone tapping in the opener uncontested. The Busmen came back with a vengeance after Super Herrera headed a Kevin Ingreso corner towards Maranon whose attempt bounced off a defender and into the goal for the 43rd minute equalizer. Brisbane had a good chance in early in the second half with Bautheac attempting an acrobatic shot with the ball sliced wide. Tempers flared in the 54th minute with Herrera and Papadopoulus figuring in a shoving match. Brisbane’s Ivan Franjic had a weak shot blocked by Tony Doblas who was a steady presence in between the posts for the Philippines squad. A well placed cross by Jeffrey Christaens was cleared but Stephan Schrock’s rebound after was off target. The PFL Champions went ahead in the 65th when Mike Ott sent a perfect through ball towards Maranon who curled the ball past the fully stretched Jamie Young. A long attempt from Schrock was deflected for corner for Ceres-Negros. Kevin Ingreso’s delivery was not dealt properly by the Roar defense which saw the ball bounce towards Nazari in front of goal. The midfielder put enough power in the shot to bounce off the keepers hands and trickle in to the far post in the 75th minute. The home squad pushed for an equalizer in the remaining minutes and were rewarded three minutes from time when Franjic’s strike hit the back of the net. The crowd egged their squad for an equalizer with five minutes added on but the Filipino side held on for the 3-2 victory. “I’m really proud of my players, especially because we are still not prepared for these kind of games,” said Ceres Coach Risto Vidakovic. “You can see in the last 15-20 minutes that the intensity went down. I’m really proud of them. They played ninety minutes, they fought, and I think we deserve to win.” he added. Man of the Match Bienvenido Maranon was proud of the achievement by the club after beating the odds and securing the place to the final round of qualification of the elite competition. “I feel so happy, not just for me that I scored two goals, but I feel really really happy for the team because this club is amazing. We are doing everything good in the last few years,” said Maranon who with the core of the team won the ASEAN Zone of last years’ AFC Cup. The club again made history as being the first Philippine squad to make it to the Play-off round of Asia’s elite club competition where they will face Chinese side Tianjin Quanjian. Though winning big in Brisbane, Vidakovic is still treating the match as part of the pre-season for the squad who has just started their training in the last three weeks. “We have to treat the (Tianjin) game like this one (Brisbane) . We have to enjoy it, try to compete with them, and we don’t have pressure,” said the Ceres mentor. That’s the good thing for us. Whatever we do , if we get a good result, for us it’s a plus.” Ceres-Negros will face the the Chinese club on June 30 which features the like of Brazilian Alexander Pato and Belgian Axel Witsel. They will also have to deal with the weather as the port city is averaging sub-zero temperatures in the last few weeks. ceresfootball.com/ceres-silences-roar-books-slot-in-acl-play-off-round/

I hope that they keep their momentum going. It would be big for Philippine football if they make it into the tournament. Hopefully that would rekindle the interest in football and bring in sponsors for the local league and clubs.

Hopefully that would rekindle the interest in football and bring in sponsors for the local league and clubs. I am not sure it is a good idea for Ceres to make the group stage in the AFC Champions League. Australian clubs were routinely routed there last year and they might suffer the same fate. It wouldn't look good if we see inflated scores against them in the national media. Many would look at the scores and wouldn't understand the significance of playing in the top tier club competition in Asia. On the other hand, they will return to the AFC cup if they don't get past Tianjin and I believe would be in the running for hardware at the end of the season over there.
