The Sun? It's good for picking up asong kalye poop. That's it. They're like a broken clock -- correct for only twice a day. Funny that they refer to Dooley as an ex-Leverkusen defender. I guess they don't think that captain of the US national team counts for much. Completely agree with you xyz1000. They are infamously known all over Europe for spreading false football news just to get clicks or sell paper.

The coaching staff will be comprised of Brits, joining Chris Greatwich.
TERRY BUTCHER (Head Coach) STEVE MARSELLA (GK coach) SCOTT COOPER (Technical Adviser)
Marsella was Butcher's GK coach in Inverness before going overseas as a GK trainer. He's been in the Philippines since April (or was he already with the team in the home match vs Tajikistan?). Butcher, on the other hand, has been on Palami's radar since last year when he was looking for a new coach for Global.

Indeed it is official Azkals name ex-England World Cup skipper as new head coach Terry Butcher, a tough, hard-nosed defender during his international career for England, who embarked on a coaching career that took him to Scotland and Australia, has been appointed coach of the Philippine national team that is set to see action in the AFC Asian Cup for the first time next year. The 59-year-old Butcher’s role with the Azkals will be announced on Thursday night along with the appointment of former Irish coach Scott Cooper as senior football adviser of the national team as Azkals manager Dan Palami took the lead in strengthening the back room staff in preparation for major tournaments in the next seven months. Butcher, who played 77 matches for England in a 10-year span that included three World Cup tournaments, last coached for English League Two side Newport County three years ago. He also served as assistant coach to the Scottish National team. Although he only moved to Asia five years ago after coaching English side Leicester’s youth team, Cooper has already gained plenty of experience, having steered Thailand League powerhouse Buriram United to the league title in his first season and the knockout phase of the prestigious AFC Champions League. Among the highlights of Cooper’s stint in Thailand was leading Ubon UMT United to back-to-back promotion from the third division to the top-flight from 2015 to 2017. “I see this as a big challenge,” said Butcher in a video call from Moscow, Russia, where is currently based, covering the World Cup for BBC. “I see a lot of work ahead of us. But it will be fun work. It will be exciting work.” Butcher acknowledged the efforts of former Azkals coach Thomas Dooley and the players for reaching the Asian Cup and achieving the country’s highest FIFA ranking. “I have to say a big thank you to Thomas Dooley for getting the Azkals that far and for improving the team and believing in the team,” he said. “I think with another team, behind the team, these are exciting times for the Philippines.” Sources said Cooper will play an active role in assisting Butcher as the England legend treads unchartered territory in Asian football. Goalkeeping coach Steve Marcells and Chris Greatwich, who assisted Dooley in the match against Tajikistan last March, complete the Azkals’ brain trust. Butcher said his reign will be “friendly and instructive”, pointing out that he wants players to enjoy representing the country. “Playing for the country should be an honor and a privilege and a pleasure,” said Butcher. “But I want to be challenged. The players have to be challenged. I’m not coming there for a holiday and enjoy the weather. There’s a whole country that your responsibility for. I want to work hard for the team and strive to be the best. There’s no point of going there if you don’t want to be successful. With success comes pressure so we can’t rest on our laurels. There’s no reason why we can’t get high as we possibly can.” Butcher said he will be out to erase the misconception that English coaches only play direct, long-ball football. “We want to win games with a bit of style, with a bit of finesse,” said Butcher, who visited Manila in 2016 to watch the AFF Suzuki Cup. “Let’s make it fun. Let’s make people love watching good football. That’s our aim and our ambition.” sports.inquirer.net/303426/azkals-name-ex-england-world-cup-skipper-new-head-coach?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1528969323

I'm looking forward to see Terry at the helm of our NT. I really hope it's more of an upgrade. I'm just being concerned about his former stats in which he was sacked 5 times before.
Our country is his newest assignment after 3 years of absence in coaching.
I'm looking forward to see a beautiful combo with Scott Cooper who has experience in Asian Football especially Thailand.
I really hope PFF made the right decision and hope we could deliver the good combo to great results.
For Coach Dooley, I hope he accepts a position from PFF. I think it's for grassroots level. I hope they also have plans for our grassroots level in order for the National teams's good results to go down to age and grassroots level.
If Coach Dooley don't accept it. I guess he will move to Singapore since SIN is interested to acquire him.

The new Azkal coach Terry Butcher.
1. International caps: 77 (vs 81 of Thomas Dooley) - not much difference.
2. FIFA World cup experience - check! 3 times.
3. Captaincy experience of a National Team - yes (same as Dooley)
Terry Butcher's credentials are almost the same as the former coach Thomas Dooley. But I think the PFF/Azkals got a very good deal getting Terry Butcher and replacing Thomas Dooley because:
4. Which country is stronger and more successful in football? U.S. or England? - you know the answer.
Welcome to the Philippine Azkals, the (literally) bloody Englishman Terry Butcher. ^_^

And currently, Germany is the most successful NT right now.

^But he played for US National Team and not for the Germany NT. Afterall, he is more American since he choose the side of his American father than side of his German mother.
If even if go with your perspective that he is more of a German football player because he played for Bundesliga then we shouldn't be comparing football clubs/divisions in national teams. Anyways, just to play along, English Premier League is more successful than Bundesliga.

He was capped only by USMNT because he was playing then in Bundesliga and he was half-american through his Father. Well, I will not argue that EPL is way more successful than Bundesliga but...... the league and environment itself did not produce high-class English Players because the clubs are more incline to sign-up players from abroad which includes Germany.

still my point stands. Getting Terry butcher as the new NT coach is an upgrade from our former Thomas Dooley.
I’m not saying Dooley did not did a good job, he has done a stellar job. Now that we have a promising new coach with better credentials (if not equal) than the former coach, there is more reason to be optimistic for the Azkals and the Philippine football.

Who's better? Dooley or Butcher? What's more important in this move is that it "shakes up" the status quo. All the players will have to prove themselves again, play better to get the starting job at every position. No more "free rides", even for the YB brothers. Players' position may change according the new system the coach may want to implement. This is better for the entire team, specially for the new comers. We all know that in the last year of Dooley's management, the team have not shown major improvement, it is basically flat in performance. There was a significant improvement between dooley’s strategy vs weiss’s. Dooley also let some young untested players play. Only time can tell if the new coach will change a lot of things

Why are their playing experiences even being discussed here? This is for a coaching position.
What's important is what Terry Butcher's coaching experience is compared to Dooley's, and one has to consider the years that Dooley had as coach of the Azkals. Is Coach Butcher's experience better compared to Dooley when Dooley was first hired? Perhaps. Dooley was involved with MLS teams, and was in the running for head coach for some teams, but he never made it.
Dooley has all the years of experience as Azkals coach now, so the important comparison is whether Coach Butcher's coaching experience compares against Dooley's today's. I'm not sure it does. Especially if one is looking for an upgrade.
At best this hire is a bet, just like it was with Dooley, just like it was with Weiss. I was hoping the PFF would've gone with someone with more experience and a record of success. Not another risky bet. I think we're past that stage now. After all, the team is enjoying its highest ranking ever (in the 110s) and the goal is to go better than 100. Not sure Coach Butcher is a known enough factor to take the team there.
It's done. Let's fully support Coach Butcher.

Former England captain Terry Butcher will not be taking up the reins as Philippines head coach. Having managed a variety of different clubs and spent a period as Scotland assistant manager to George Burley, the 59-year-old had agreed a two-year deal, starting this weekend, to coach the south east Asian nation. However, Butcher will not be taking up his first international management post as the former England defender does not believe the system is in place for his time in charge of the Philippines to be successful. “I’m sorry to announce that I will not be proceeding in the role as head coach of the Philippines national football team,” Butcher said in a statement to Press Association Sport. “Across recent months I’ve been intensely engaged with many people to thoroughly understand and prepare for this exciting challenge. “The vital issue for myself was to carefully build a robust plan to meet the football ambitions of the national team and ‘do the country proud’. “I remain convinced that the Philippines has great potential and I’m impressed with the high-calibre people that I’ve had the pleasure to meet. “Regretfully, I’ve not been able to make this work in the way that I intended and I’ve decided not to continue in the role. “I wish all good things for the Azkals and in particular success in their debut in the 2019 Asia Cup. One day, I look forward to seeing a Philippines team in the World Cup.” www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/sport/national/16394955.terry-butcher-pulls-out-of-deal-to-coach-philippines/
