OT na pero hayaan na natin... Merong national team ang Pilipinas sa rugby?! This is brand new information! Active ang Rugby Union dito sa Pinas, hindi lang din nabibigyan ng pansin. Check it out: www.prfu.com/

Yes, the PRFU have an excellent and informative website unlike the PFF. As I said their organization is not only more organized and efficient but media savvy as well. Since we don't have a tradition in rugby in the past, most people just don't realize that we have a good team. In fact, we have a better chance of making the World Rugby Cup sooner then we would in football.

Yes the Volcanoes won a silver medal at the SEA Games in Thailand. And yes, most of the players are from Wales, England, and Australia. They are good.

Oo nga, pag rugby ang pinaguusapan sa Pinas, iisipin mo iyong sinisinghot. ;D
But seriously, the Philippines rugby national team has been on a roll the past few years. They have been champions in Asian 5 Nations men's 15 competitions thru 3 different divisions from division 4 to division 2 and are now competing in division 1 this year which if they win will land them on the Asian premier top 5 nations tournament next year, which will compete for a slot in the World Rugby cup. They and possibly Japan, the Asian rugby champ which have a good professional league are the only teams who have not lost a game in Asians 5 Nations tournament since they joined in 2008, a rise that is unprecedented in World rugby as they only started joining competitions a few years ago.
It is true that like the Azkals, a lot of their members including their coach are Fil Foreigners, but unlike in Philippine football, they have been joining a lot of Asian rugby junior competitions which they have also won and a lot of these players who are locally based, are now playing or will play at the senior level. They have even reached the stage where they now will be fielding a National development team entirely based on local players who will compete in these same competitions.
Another difference is they are fielding a women's team who have competed and have won in recent competitions in contrast to the Philippine women's national football team which haven't played in more than a year and with the SEA games scrapped might not have a chance to compete awhile longer.
They are held up by the International Rugby Board which is like FIFA for rugby, as a model for all emerging nations on how to organize and be successful in international rugby without too much capital.
Just like football, rugby had the stigma of being played mostly by the exclusive schools in Manila but unlike football, they didn't have the long traditions of playing the game like some of our provinces have in the Western Visayas. Also they have the disadvantage unlike in football of not having their sport played at the college level and end up playing at the amateur club level when they reached that point. Inspite of all this handicaps, they have been doing well in international competition. They have also been promoting the sport in the provinces by organizing events and free clinics.
Nevertheless, football is still the world's favorite sport, and inspite of the fact that we are so far behind, hopefully our leaders in the PFF, realize that, if you set up a good program from the grassroots level on up, join youth competitions to give our players experience, set up a professional league to develop our players we can just be as successful as our national rugby team have been. Not joining the U-23 team Olympic qualifiers and the U-17 AFC competitions this year as the PFF has done, is an example of why our football is so different from how the PRFU runs things. Our future senior mens team player could have emerged from those competitions but again they missed the boat. That is why we have a couple of players older than 35 still playing for the Azkals, while in other countries they would have been retired a long time ago.

From Wikipedia: The Philippines national rugby union team, nicknamed the "Volcanoes" represents the Philippines in international rugby union. The Philippines have yet to make their debut at the Rugby World Cup, but have been playing in the Asian 5 Nations tournaments since its inception in 2008. Currently they are in Division I along with Malaysia, Korea and Singapore. My bad That's what I get for responding to an old post. I'm a big UC Berkeley sports fan, their rugby team was national collegiate champions in 2011, won 19 of the last 21 national titles, but I just can't get into this sport. Been following their (american) football team, this will be the first season in a long time that we don't have season tickets. They're playing at the AT&T Park this year, SF Giants' home, while their stadium is being renovated. Too much hassle and costs too much to go to San Francisco. Both my kids are University of California alums. My slogan at their forum is "I didn't go to Cal, but my money did."
