MANILA, Philippines -- The newest Philippine Azkals team member, Filipino-Spanish Angel Aldeguer, is waiting for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) approval for him to suit up for the Nationals should they barge into the Challenge Cup Group Stage.
But even without the approval, Aldeguer said he feels like an Azkal already.
“Yes I am already an official member of the Azkals,” said the 6’2” Spanish-speaking striker through his cousin Rafael Garcia, who acted as his translator.
Aldeguer already has a Philippine passport and is raring to represent the country in the Challenge Cup Group Stage.
The Azkals will face Myanmar should they get past the Mongolia Blue Wolves in the second leg of the Challenge Cup qualifiers.
“We're just waiting for the go signal of the AFC if he could play against the Myanmar,” said Garcia who is incidentally, a brother of former Rain or Shine head coach, Caloy Garcia.
The Fil-Spanish is planning to take English lessons so he can communicate better with his team, composed mainly of Filipino-British and full-blooded Pinoy players.
The 26-year-old Aldeguer arrived in Manila last Tuesday and has been training with the Azkals since.
“He trained with the team already… He's happy about the team, the team really welcomed him. It's a very
competitive play,” said Garcia.
Born with ball on the foot
Angel Aldeguer during practice.
Aldeguer was born in Malaga, southern Spain to a Filipina mother, who hails from Ilagan, Isabela.
He’s been playing football since he was 6. “He was born with a ball on the foot already,” quipped Garcia.
He suited as a forward for Spanish third division Club Deportivo Ronda and also trained with Spain’s first division team.
Aldeguer said he has long dreamed of playing for the National team.
“When the opportunity came along, I took the opportunity… It's an honor to represent the country,” he said.
When asked about his team mates' chances versus Mongolia this coming March 15, Aldeguer said the only thing the Azkals should worry about is the Mongolian weather.
“He's hoping that the team would be able to adjust with the weather. But he has good vibes that the team will win,” said Garcia. source: www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/03/04/11/fil-spanish-striker-excited-play-azkals

he has to learn to understand English, team communication is very important. He gets along with our team easily because of our history.

I like the fact that he can play as a striker as they need somebody to pair with Phil Younghusband that can releive the pressure on Phil. Now all they need is an attacking midfielder.

Since aldeguer is listed as a midfielder, he can play as an attacking centerfielder just below phil. or he can be at his usual right wing position and james play the midfield role. IMO the azkals' centerfield really needs to be beefed up.

Versatile Fil-Spanish player gets Weiss nod BY BONG PEDRALVEZ FILIPINO-Spanish player Angel Aldeguer has impressed the coaching staff with his form and attitude and will be a shoo-in for the Azkals after their outing against Mongolia, according to coach Hans Michael Weiss. "While other players talk what they can do, he (Aldeguer) does his talking on the playing pitch," Weiss said in an interview in last Saturday’s PSA Awards dinner after assessing the Malaga native’s four-day tryouts with the Azkals. "Aldeguer is a versatile player who can play midfield or forward," added Weiss of the 6-foot-3, 26-year-old player who plays for Spanish Third Division Club Deportivo Ronda and whose mother is a native of Isabela. Weiss was so sold on Aldeguer’s abilities he disclosed he might even revise the team’s usual "4-4-2" attacking formation to "4-3-3," meaning there would be three strikers up front with Aldeguer moving either on the wings or center. More than his skills, the German mentor noted the booter’s humility "and passion to play for his mother’s country." "What I’ve always said is that we do not only need players with ability but also those who have character," Weiss said. "Aldeguer has shown he has both. "Not everyone can join this team and take over the spot of those who have worked so hard to be here. They must show they are far superior to those who are here already." Assuming the Filipinos hurdle the Mongolians in their Asian Challenge Cup qualifying series return match on March 15 in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator, Weiss said Aldeguer is certain to be named to the 23-man roster he will submit for the group stages set to begin six days later in Myanmar. He added that while Aldeguer speaks no English and needs cousin Rafael Garcia to talk for him "this won’t be a problem since the football language is universal." "I will supply them with a dictionary that translates football terms in Spanish, German, Italian, English and Portuguese," Weiss, adding Aldeguer isn’t the only European-based Filipino player he is eyeing to reinforce the nationals in the Myanmar tournament. __________________________________ Looks like Coach Weiss was so impressed with Aldeguer that he is changing the formation to a 4-3-3. www.malaya.com.ph/mar07/sports6.html

Mods You should spell it Angel Guirado y Aldeguer. In the Spanish system, your mother's name comes after your fathers. His father's surname is Guirado. His Filipina mother's is Aldeguer. If you prefer to follow normal rules, you can spell it Angel Aldeguer Guirado instead to avoid confusion.

Is it a co-incidence that his name is "ANGEL"!
Would this mean that he can save our football in the Philippines?
