"Chieffy", as he is fondly called by his teammates, is sometimes played as a striker or supporting striker. The most dramatic goals in his international career would have to be the two late goals scored against East Timor in the 2004 Tiger Cup, coming 1-0 from behind Chieffy inspired a late win for the Azkals. Proving to the regional footballing community just exactly what Azkals can do.
His cousin is Ian Araneta, a striker who plays for the national team as well as the Air Force Riders.

Remember the days when the only thing about the national team on TV (they weren't even called the Azkals yet) was Chieffy doing his airplane goal celebration on the ESPN/Star Sports Football Asia ads? And now we have people complaining the lads are overexposed. Tsk, tsk.
Regarding the clip above: Back then, I was puzzled as to why Chieffy (circa 2005) was not in the starting 11 (usually he subbed in for Ariel Zerrudo in the second half). My thinking was, wouldn't it make more sense to put one of your top three players in the field longer? Maybe Caslib was thinking about those two goals he scored as a sub against Timor Leste and decided he's better utilized that way?

Maybe he wasn't fit to play 90 minutes. There was also reference to his speed, and if that's the case the strategy would be to put in speedy fresh legs towards the latter part of the game. Clearly it worked in some of those games. Maybe he's just peaking now. Another clear thing is that his game has improved -- some players improve so much more when those around him are better.

Came in the second half and scored a couple of goals, sealing for himself the Golden Boot at the LTC.

I rarely quote myself, if ever , but I want to give myself a pat in the back for this. Just like a few years back, he comes in as a sub and immediately makes an impact. Chieffy has clearly upped his game a notch higher. He's still quick, but not overwhelmingly so. He's small and gets pushed around. But he still manages to put the ball in the net. I'm thinking that if he gained 10 lbs of muscle his game might improve even more.... just thinking. And as another poster said, if the defense pays more attention to him, that will free up PYH more! Go Azkals!

can you say the same thing about araneta po? and i agree about that last sentence. they will certainly guard chippy this time, that frees phil and angel. I've refrained from commenting too much about Ian because I was waiting and wondering if he would ever break out of his "slump" and up his game just like Caligdong has. Unfortunately there have been so many games already, enough chances already, that I feel he will not take his game up another level. Going back to the pre-Suzuki Cup games, Ian scored a lot of important goals via headers. But the Azkals game has changed. From one of defense, counter attacks, long balls leading to headers, to a game where the ball is kept mostly on the ground. That's because the passing skill level has improved. Maybe, just maybe and this is just my 2 centavos' thought, is that the Azkals style has passed him by. The style is more geared to Chieffy's strength and less to Ian's. I don't know how he scores in the UFL, whether by headers or by his feet, but the skill level there is less so that may not be a fair comparison. Whatever the reason, Ian isn't having the same success that Chieffy is enjoying. But then again, neither is Phil. I suspect from now on that Chieffy will be marked more than he has been in the past. Nothing like getting the golden boot award to make him a magnet for the defense.
