Philippines defeated an opponent we were supposed to beat. Let us wait until the Azkals faces a higher ranked opponent before assessing our true potential under Coach Weiss. The players from Europe make our team very competitive and showed what they can do with their combination play. Kuwait's defence is a lot better though and will be a true test of our potential.

But you have to admit we really improved our passing game with Coach Weiss at the helm. The Azkals today were really amazing with their passing, dribbling and passing routes.

Indeed, we weren't as efficient against Mongolia. There's definite improvement in those aspects. I'm hoping we can adjust well enough against Kuwait.
I'm glad we made history! But yeah, uncharted waters ahead for the Azkals, for sure.

self admitted Macca fanboy here, chirping once again 4 days into Sri Lanka away fixture and still seeing no defence. I missed this disciplined defensive structure during Macca's time and have never seen on Weiss tenure also, have not seen Neil's defensive tenacity anymore shown in the video above. sorry for asking you this but is this (the video) what you call "disciplined defensive structure"? All I see we're on-target shots, breakaway, and second (even third) shot chances from the opponents. Heck, the back four we're virtually sliced in the middle. All we're saved by the lone-man Etheridge. IMO, much has improved in the Azkal's performance not only offensively but also in the defensive/central midfield department. Observe that they're more efficient in tackling the opponents before they even manage to bring the ball inside the box. Even some players we're able to play off-position to compensate for the missing players, notably Jonsson's LB, Lucena's midfield. Shrock even played as CM. As for our previous Suzuki Cup Magic, well I hate to say this but luck (or should I say good karma) was on our side. If we didn't scored that much during the Timor-Leste match and on the same time did not equalized with Laos, Cambodia should have proceeded in the next round and not us. At least now, we can say the Azkals we able to win through skills and good preparation unlike during the Suzuki Cup where we just want to settle for draws (and we still to do it through heart-pounding ways such as the late equilizer of Greatwich v.s. Singapore, the last-few second equalizing header of James Y v.s. Laos).

I do like Coach Weiss' comments on yahoo though. He shows that he can be pragmatic enough to change tactics when necessary. ph.news.yahoo.com/blogs/sportsaholic/azkals-blast-brave-reds-4-0-112456379.html"The coach, though, minced no words about the level of competition they will face, and cautioned the public against expecting a similar attacking style that they unleashed on Sri Lanka. "We will have to enhance our level of play, especially considering who we will be up against. I don't think we will be able to compare both opponents (Sri Lanka and Kuwait) because it's like you play Crystal Palace and Manchester United. It's totally different football. We will not be able to be as offensive-minded as we were today against Kuwait. Otherwise we will get hammered like we have never seen before. "So we have to change our tactics, but nevertheless, if we stand compact we will have a chance. The first match will be played under incredible hot weather and we have to play smart and not waste our energy against an opponent who moves the ball very fast and technically superior. "We have to analyze them carefully. I have all their tapes and I am looking forward to the challenge."

Kuwait is a whole different proposition. Good to hear Coach Weiss' pragmatic comments there.

it would not hurt bringing mcmenemy back. we need all the football knowledge we can get but he needs to play second fiddle to wies. defensive coach maybe. This was thought out numerous times: Coach Weiss as Head Coach/Offensive Coach, McMenemy as defensive coach, and Paul Zuberbuler as Goalkeeper Coach. The thing is the credibilty of McMenemy's competence now raises eyebrows (sorry Macca fans) when looking at his very abyssmal coaching debut in the Vietnam League. We might be better off with one Head Coach. Two heads might not always be better than one.
