Correct, not playing could contribute to rust in Neil's play Just a question if he transfers to west ham, will he not fight for the #1 spot? And how likely can he be the number 1 there? Will a tranfer be financially rewarding for him?

Correct, not playing could contribute to rust in Neil's play Just a question if he transfers to west ham, will he not fight for the #1 spot? And how likely can he be the number 1 there? Will a tranfer be financially rewarding for him? Yes, of course he would be expected to fight for the #1 spot. The idea is to make sure that their current #1, Fabianski, has healthy competition to keep him sharp. He needs to know that if he performs consistently sub-par, there's always the #2 who could be moved up. It's unlikely that Neil would displace Fabianski. They're both very good GKs. But Fabianski knows the players better having played with them for the season, so there's chemistry there already. The fans like Fabianski. Fabianski would have to perform badly to be displaced. He doesn't even need to be better than Neil during the preseason. Neil would have to be a whole lot better, not just marginally better, to displace Fabianski. And that makes it unlikely. As for the financials, it would likely be more rewarding for him, although the question would always be by how much, and that's difficult to guess. By the way, Bournemouth trying to get Burnley's GK Nick Pope for 15M pounds. I think Neil would be a much better value for that kind of money.

From Fox sport asia
Reports: Price West Ham have to pay Cardiff City for Philippines star Neil Etheridge revealed
Cardiff City may be forced to sell Philippines star Neil Etheridge should a bid that matches the club’s valuation of the player be tabled, according to reports.
Etheridge, 29, ended up only enhancing his reputation in the Premier League with by keeping 10 clean sheets in 38 games, despite his club’s eventual relegation. He was also voted the club’s player of the season for his standout performances in goal.
As such, Football Insider claims that West Ham are interested in the player and that a bid of £10 million may be enough to persuade the Bluebirds into selling him. However, the club is expected to hold out for that sum as the report states they are in no financial compulsion to sell one of their standout players.
Manuel Pellegrini is keen to bring in competition for his current number one between the sticks, Lukasz Fabianski, and views the Philippines star as an ideal candidate for the role. Incidentally, Etheridge has made the second most number of saves in the recently completed 2018/19 Premier League season with 141, only trailing West Ham’s Fabianski, who is in first spot with 148 saves registered to his name.
Etheridge has won 60 caps so far for Philippines.
10mil? I thought it would be higher hehehe. What do you think guys? :-)

But that's ridiculous. If we compare the offer with the market value of GKs from midtable teams like Schmeichel (11mil), Forster and Pope (both 9mil), 10mil looks a bit pricey.

From ESPN DONE DEAL: West Ham United have signed goalkeeper Roberto, 33, on a free transfer. He officially joins the London club on July 1, when his contract with Espanyol runs out.
So Neil is a Bluebird, and he will stay at the championship?

From The Sun
LIVERPOOL are competing with newly promoted Aston Villa for the services of Cardiff City ace Neil Etheridge.
The goalkeeper was the biggest positive of the Bluebirds' immediate retreat back to the Championship, winning the club's Player of the Year award.
Along with his quick reactions from open play, the Philippines international earned a reputation for penalty saves - stopping three spot-kicks in 2018/19.
Such talents have led to Liverpool making an enquiry over Etheridge's availability for a summer switch.
Wales Online report on no concrete offer being made at this stage, although Villa opened bidding at £8million earlier in the week.
The newly promoted side can offer a better shot at first-team football than Liverpool as well as a link-up with Neil Cutler, the goalkeeping coach who helped develop the 29-year-old during a successful stint at Walsall.
Moving to Anfield would likely place him as No 2 behind Alisson Becker, with Simon Mignolet and Lloris Karius reportedly on the way out of Jurgen Klopp's club.
Sun Sport understand Bournemouth to be one team seeking the Belgian whereas Karius is halfway through a two-year loan spell with Besiktas.
Mignolet has moved to delay making a decision on his future until after the international period.
Etheridge, however, has indicated his openness to becoming stand-in at a big club, seeing it as being "one step away" from a chance to claim the No 1 jersey.
If this is true I think he should go for it... what can you say guys :-)

I am a Liverpool fan so I guess you know where I stand. I think Neil has a pretty good chance of competing for the #1 spot there even though he might not start at that position.

Liverpool is enticing. It's not like being the #2 at Fulham. At Fulham, Schwarzer was the solid #1 and there was no chance that a young Neil would displace him. I'm not so sure Alisson has as strong a grip on the #1 position at Liverpool as Schwarzer had at Fulham. Point is, a very good, in-form Etheridge may have a chance at the top spot. Would certainly keep Alisson aware of the competition.
On the other hand, Aston Villa -- back to the Premier League, with a goalkeeping coach he knows, and the presumed #1 as soon as he comes in.
It's a problem. A good problem to have.

How come neil is still not playing in matches with cardiff? I thought he was cleared for play? I saw his name in the line up for about 3 to 4 matches but still did not play. Id he still injured or is there something else? It is a debate among Cardiff fans now. Alex Smithies is solid and decent; they also went on to 7 or 8 games unbeaten with Smithy on the post, until that 4-2 defeat against West Brom last weekend. It is just that NE1 is getting great competition for the #1 kit at Cardiff now. I am a lurker at the Cardiff forum, most of the fans believe that NE1 is still the number 1 keeper, but they do not want to rush him.

Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge reveals Premier League mental health struggles in candid interview "Living in that moment I didn't enjoy it very much," he told the Across The Line podcast, "I broke down. "Not many people know this, but at the start of the Premier League season I started seeing a psychologist, because I could do everything on the field, but mentally I was empty." The then embattled goalkeeper even revealed that when Cardiff sealed promotion to the top flight, he found no fulfilment. "I was saying I was all happy, but in reality I wasn't that happy we got promoted," he added. "Well, not that I wasn't happy, it's hard to describe. "It was an empty happiness, there was no real fulfilment for me." He attributes those feelings to the destabilising nature of his career to that point. The 29-year-old had spells at Fulham, Leatherhead, Charlton Athletic, Bristol Rovers, Crewe Alexandra, Oldham Athletic and Walsall before finding home in the Welsh capital. He has always appeared to be a person who has the utmost confidence in his ability, but even he admits that seemingly impenetrable outward persona is sometimes bravado. "Am I good enough?," he continued. "That's a big thing. Sometimes I do put on a front of 'I'm amazing' and I do believe it, but sometimes I don't believe it." The visit to the psychologist was triggered by a conversation he had with his fiancée Alexandra Solera. She could see he was getting no enjoyment out of the game he loved, having gone from 'zero to 100' in such a short space of time and implored him to seek help in order to cope with the sizeable changes. He visited the club doctor and had an incredibly sobering conversation about when Cardiff sealed promotion that really hit home. Etheridge said: "The doctor said: 'When we got promoted, everyone was dancing, drinking, you just sat in your spot and didn't move.' "I didn't even know. He goes: 'Did you enjoy it?' "And I said: 'Yeah, well not really, but yeah.' It's a weird concept. "I just found it extremely tough, mentally. Not because of my ability, but because I couldn't realise what I'd achieved." He says the work with the psychologist paid dividends and it showed in the back end of the Premier League season, when he earned high praise for his many stellar displays. Etheridge believes now he has struck a better balance between enjoying the game and his unrelenting focus on success. He has managed to regain that No.1 spot in the City goal this season, ousting Alex Smithies in recent weeks, and Bluebirds will hope he is back to his rip-roaring best to help get this Championship campaign back on track. www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/cardiff-city-goalkeeper-neil-etheridge-17170960

Here they go again? I wonder what will happen this time:-)
According to an exclusive report from Football League World, West Ham are lining up a £3.5 million bid for Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.
The Hammers have real problems in the goalkeeping department.
Lukasz Fabianski has recently returned from injury, but the Polish ace needs more competition.
Roberto and David Martin are clearly not good enough to cover for Fabianski, and Etheridge would be an upgrade on both of them.
Football League World claims that a source has told them that West Ham are preparing a £3.5 million bid for the 29-year-old, but Cardiff are reluctant to let him leave
Etheridge is a decent goalkeeper. He has 65 international caps for the Philippines to his name, and has made 217 career senior appearances. So he is vastly experienced.
The Bluebirds ‘keeper commands his area with authority and is an accomplished shot-stopper.
Etheridge would provide more competition for Fabianski. But let’s not kid ourselves. The Philippines international would be far from a glamour signing.
He is a decent goalkeeper at best. And he certainly should not be part of a long-term plan to take West Ham to another level.
If the Hammers can pick him up for £3.5 million, however, it should be considered as good business for the east London outfit.
