What if Schwarzer doesn't get back before the transfer window closes? Are player loans allowed after the transfer window closes? If not, the possibility exists that by the time Schwarzer gets back, Neil or Stockdale can't be loaned out anymore with the transfer window closed. I agree with xyz1000, with Schwarzer out, Fulham is more likely to hang on to Neil as #2 to Stockdale.
The other side to Neil falling to #3 is that it might be easier for Fulham to release him for the AFC Challenge Cup. Neil's exposure at the AFC Challenge Cup would probably be more productive than a loan spell at a lower division club.

Thought you guys might like to read a Danish fan's comment on bigsoccer, on how the Danish team Odense fooled Neil and the Fulham defenders when they made their first goal: Odense is a highly experienced Europa Cup team, and if you look closer at the incident in question, you will notice that the Odense players deliberately are putting on a small "show" to fool the Fulham keeper and defense... while Odense took their time to put two men in the wall, they also used some gestures, as to where their players should stand in the wall, trying to fool the Fulham players to believe that the shot would be to the left of the wall and not to the right.. so they were both trying to fool the keeper and slightly drag the Fulham defenders a bit to the left, so they got an easier shot to the right.... watch here (around 2:40 into the clip) : videa.hu/videok/sport/el-fulh...K1pPiyeubSOGGYNeil is very young at 21 and still has a lot to learn, but it is amazing the good reviews he has already received in his debut match at such a young age. In contrast Stockdale is already 26 and is now only getting a chance for first time action as a starter with a Premiership team after subbing this last few years.

Thanks for the writeup, Wiking. I knew that Neil wasn't the first, although I thought that was Jonsson. If you want to split hairs on a technicality, Cagara wasn't an Azkal when he played in the Europa Cup. I know, I know, that is so minor! As for Neil, he is probably the first Southeast Asian to start or play for a Premiership team. And he will likely be the first one to play in a Premiership game.

thanks gents. Btw xyz1000, I've heard some Indonesians are saying that they have the first SEAsian who has played in the EPL. Apparently Robbie van Persie has an Indonesian grandmother, or something(unconfirmed/unverified?). I read it on missossology.info as I was looking for pics. The site has a fan girl/gay feel to it but they've got a great collection of pics and some very knowledgeable posters. Some of our members here are members there too. missosology.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=67402&sid=f4223546c7957c9438ff0ae9aa005c57&start=8730

Hey good find, Since Indonesia used to be a Dutch colony it's not impossible for this to happen. I wonder, while our Fil-fors have been vocal in their acknowledgement of their Filipino heritage and have flocked to the Philippines to try and represent the country in soccer, has any of these in that list done the same. I'm not implying anything, just curious.

well a lot of Indo-Dutch have left the country 'cause of discrimination during when their country got its freedom from the Netherlands (to be specific Sukarno's era), with that some of them have this animosity towards Indonesia unlike here where we manage to love every conqueror we had.

Plays for a fantastic team Arsenal, but as far as I know hasn't played a single game for the Indonesian National Team. Oh right, that's because he plays for the Dutch National Team. Tebow would have a stronger case of being Filipino than van Persie of being Indonesian. But then Roman Gabriel would have the honor of being the first "star" quarterback (American football) with strong Filipino ties, not Tebow. Should Natalie Coughlin be considered a Filipino Olympic gold medalist even though she represented the United States? Anyway, we know what it means when we say first Southeast Asian. Unless those guys actually played for the Indonesian national team then it's difficult to consider them so.

The term I've been thinking about is Southeast Asian International. That should qualify it enough.

Etheridge: Fulham debut put PH on football map Philippine Azkals first choice goal keeper Neil Etheridge believes his debut for Fulham FC last week has helped raise awareness for Philippine football. An injury to Fulham's first choice goal keeper Mark Schwarzer gave Etheridge a chance to start for the club's Europa League match against Odense BK. Fulham had a 2-nil lead in the first half and Etheridge made some impressive saves. But Odense completed a second half comeback to end the match in a 2-all draw, booting Fulham out of the tournament. Etheridge said he is satisfied with his debut performance, and hopes that it will be the start of even greater things for Philippine football. "It's not just a personal achievement, it has really put the Philippines on the map," he said. "I watched some of the highlights, and they were talking about the Philippines a lot, and things like that in the build-up," Etheridge added. "It was great to make people aware that the Philippines has a football team and I'm a part of it." No regrets Etheridge added that he will never regret playing for the Azkals, even if he is constantly being questioned about his decision. He is hoping to gain enough experience in the next few years in order to help team PH XI compete at a higher level. "I'm happy and throughout my career, I'm going to take Filipino football forward. I want to take the national team with me," Etheridge said. "I think the more I progress, the more the team will progress and I'm sure other players will come in and fill the gap in the same way. Hopefully, I can be one of many playing in the Premiership or in other leagues in the world." www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/12...h-football-mapAt 21, and at the level he is playing at, Neil would have been an outstanding prospect for the English national team. Now that he is committed to the Philippines, it is good to see that he is happy with his decision, taking the responsibility seriously and helping move Philippine football forward. BTW there is a list in the International football forum, under the Indonesia thread listing the players, eligible for inclusion in their national team.
