Younghusband the main man for AzkalsMonday, 12 March 2012 14:24 images.the-afc.com/afc/comps/afc_challenge_cup/3x2/younghusband_phi_ind_300x200.jpg [/img] Kathmandu: Two-goal hero Phil Younghusband will be the man to watch as the Philippines take on Tajikistan on Tuesday with a place in the semi-finals of the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup at stake. The 24-year-old scored in the 11th and 74th minutes of Sunday's 2-0 victory over India that sent the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup winners out of the reckoning and sent the Philippines into a decisive final Group B clash with Tajikistan, the inaugural Challenge Cup champions. England-born Younghusband (pictured) put in a virtuoso display against India with the former Chelsea reserve's performance drawing plaudits from Philippines coach Michael Weiss. "He is a good leader, and was my man of the match. He is a good motivator, cool in front of goal and works tirelessly. I am very happy with him," said the German, who is in his third stint in Asia having previously been assistant coach at J.League side Kyoto Purple Sanga and the China U-20s national team. The performance of Younghusband - who now plays his club football in the Philippines with Loyola Meralco Sparks in the semi-pro United Football League, where his older brother and international team-mate James also plays - will not have gone unnoticed in the Tajikistan camp. However, head coach Kemal Alispahic has revealed that he will not be deviating too much from the game plan that saw them defeat India 2-0 before giving a commendable account of themselves in the 2-0 loss to tournament favourites and defending champions DPR Korea. "My philosophy will not be any different as we play every match to win," the Bosnian said following Sunday's loss to the North Koreans. "We have to win against the Philippines to qualify and I believe in my team and I believe we can achieve success." If Tuesday's clash between the Tajiks and the ever-improving ASEAN side then the match will go to penalties, with the 2-0 results in all of the previous Group B matches rendering goal difference and goals scored equal. www.the-afc.com/en/tournaments/men-a-youth/afc-challenge-cup/38316-tjk-v-phi-preview

INQUIRER Sports Performer of the Week: Phil YounghusbandBy Mark Giongco INQUIRER.net 8:31 pm | Saturday, March 24th, 2012 MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines sparkled in the recently concluded 2012 AFC Challenge Cup as it proudly took home the bronze medal. And one of those behind the wheel that steered the Azkals drive is top scorer Phil Younghusband, who was awarded with the Golden Boot award. “It’s my first award at the senior level, so its really important to me,” said Younghusband. The 24-year-old Younghusband led the tournament with six goals in four crucial matches. And twice, Younghusband flirted with a hattrick registering two goals each against India and Palestine, wherein the Azkals’ seized third place, 4-3. Younghusband edged Ginebra’s Rudy Hatfield, who pulled off a throwback performance in the Kings’ stunning win over Talk N’ Text, for the weekly citation. Hatfield, the 34-year-old big man, finished with a career-high 30 points on 14-of-20 shooting from the field and hauled down 14 rebounds. sports.inquirer.net/38759/inquirer-sports-performer-of-the-week-phil-younghusband

cb3: All of these data in the site you've mentioned are accurate since it's from the IFFHS (International Federation of Football History & Statistics) which is sanctioned by FIFA. Phil is actually the current highest goalscorer as of date in terms of "A" international matches; he has six goals compared to Lionel Messi's 3 for Argentina. I hope he continues this impressive performance.

Guess what who's one of the top scorers around the world for March The FIFA backed "International Federation of Football History & Statistics" (IFFHS) has accounted all the goals scored in International Club, Continental competitions & World Club Championship games for 2012 so far & has FC BARCELONA forward LIONEL MESSI as the Nº1 Goalscorer with 9 goals. The accounting factors are important as they explains why some big names are missing, here the local Leagues are not taken into account. The only Spanish player in the Top 10 is Valencia CF forward ROBERTO SOLDADO with 5 goals. Notable absences is Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, along with amp; team-mate Karim Benzema, & Ibrahimovic (AC Milan), for example. LIONEL MESSI Here is the IFFHS top 10 list: 1. Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona/Argentina) 9 goals (3/6) 2. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (FC Schalke 04/Holland) 8 goals (1/7) 3. Philip James Placer Younghusband (Loyola Meralco Sparks/Phillipnes) 6 goals (6/0)4. Didier Drogba (Chelsea Londres/Ivory Coast) 5 goals (4/1) 5. Roberto Soldado (Valencia CF/Spain) 5 goals (3/2) 6. Arjen Robben (FC Bayern/Holaand) 5 goles (2/3) 7. Radamel Falcao (Atlético de Madrid/Colombia) 5 goals (1/4). 8. Emmanuel Atukwei Clottey (Berekum Chelsea FC/Ghana) 5 goals (0/5). 9. Mario Gómez (FC Bayern/Germany) 5 goals (0/5). .. Dorlan Mauricio Pabón (Atlético Nacional/Colombia) 5 goals (0/5). spanishfootballsports.blogspot.com/2012/03/lionel-messi-iffhs-current-top-goal.html

Good work guys. I am adding this lists to bigsoccer so that fans(including media reps) from other countries might become aware of this significant achievements by a Filipino player.
Congratulations Phil. You could have stayed in Europe and made a name for yourself but your dedication to your family and our country has led you to the less traveled route of gaining recognition by staying at home, promoting the sport and trying to lead this small football country to international football glory.

Phil gains mythical 'Asian Best XI' listBy Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated April 04, 2012 12:00 AM Comments (2) View comments MANILA, Philippines - Phil Younghusband’s solid striking in last month’s AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal has earned for the Azkals ace forward a spot in a mythical “Asian Best XI” put together by the football website Goal.Com. Younghusband, who scored a tournament-best six goals during the Azkals’ historic drive to third place in the Challenge Cup, earned the site’s nod as top striker for March in the list of top performers from all over Asia. “The Azkals had to be the biggest story of the AFC Challenge Cup with their run to third place, and the former top scorer for Chelsea’s youth team became a hero to his country after netting six goals and earning the tournament’s Golden Boot,” the website for international football news wrote of Younghusband. “The 24-year-old striker had a fine tournament, including a decisive double in the win over India, as well as the opener in their semifinal defeat to Turkmenistan,” it added. The Fil-British is in the company of high profile booters like Shinji Kagawa of Borussia Dortmund (center midfielder), Suchao Nuchnum of Buriram United (left midfielder), and Koo Ja-Cheol of Augsburg (right midfielder). Goalkeeper Baba Malick of Lekhwiya, rightback Salem Al Dosari of Al Hilal, center-backs Alex Wilkinson of Central Coast Mariners and Mohammad Nosrati of Persepolis, left-back Hassan Ashjari of Sepahan, center midfielder Pak Nam-Chol, the Challenge Cup MVP and key player of back-to-back champion North Korea, and attacking midfielder Nam Tae-Hee of Lekhwiya, are also in. Graham Arnold of Central Coast Mariners was named manager of the “Asian Best XI.” Goal.com is also conducting a reader’s poll on its Asian Player of the Month and Younghusband enjoyed the lead after two days, garnering 48.51 percent of the votes at presstime. The voting ends on April 5. www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=794178&publicationSubCategoryId=69&keyword=sp_football

Philippines' AFC Challenge Cup hero Phil Younghusband wins Goal.com readers' Asian Player of the Month for MarchThe votes are in and the readers have had their say following this week's Asian Best XI announcement, with the player of the month decided... AFC Challenge Cup Golden Shoe winner Philip Younghusband has won the Goal.com readers' Asian Player of the Month award for March. The 24-year-old former Chelsea forward stared during March after scoring six goals at the Challenge Cup where the Azkals recorded a stunning third-place finish. In Goal.com's readers' poll, across our 10 Asian editions, Younghusband won the vote ahead of Thailand's Suchao Nuchnum and Iran's Mohammad Nosrati as well as Dortmund's Japanese star Shinji Kagawa, who was overlooked despite a fine month in the Bundesliga. Younghusband, who plays his club football in the Philippines with Loyola Meralco Sparks, was one of the stars of the Challenge Cup in Nepal played during March. The England-born striker netted a brace in his side's 2-0 group stage win over India, as well as a strike in the 2-1 victory over Tajikistan which secured the Azkals progress to the knockout stage. In the knockout stage, Younghusband again proved lethal in front of goal, but his strike in the semifinal against Turkmenistan wasn't enough as the Philippines lost 2-1. Younghusband would prove the hero in the third-place playoff with a double in the 4-3 win over Palestine. www.goal.com/en-india/news/141/asia/2012/04/06/3017086/philippines-afc-challenge-cup-hero-phil-younghusband-wins
