Now that Chot Reyes has taken his name out of consideration for Gilas coach, my vote for next head coach goes to Tab Baldwin, who is apparently in the Philippines. Unlike Tim Cone and Robert Jaworski, he is much more familiar with international rules and play and has a track record for coaching national sides to international success as he did with New Zealand. He could be the new Ron Jacobs. "Chot Reyes, who started handling Gilas Pilipinas in 2012, will no longer be calling the shots for the national team after withdrawing his name from the SBP’s search. Among the names floating that could take over are former New Zealand coach Tab Baldwin, Purefoods Star Hotshots coach Tim Cone and basketball legend, Robert Jaworski, among others." www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/sbp-comes-up-with-tentative-criteria-for-new-gilas-coach-shortlist-could-be-out-next-week

Veteran international coach Tab Baldwin will take over the coaching reins for the Philippine national men’s basketball team for the next four years. Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) vice chairman Ricky Vargas told InterAksyon.com in a telephone interview that Baldwin’s appointment as new head coach will be formalized Monday night during the meeting with the other officers of the cage governing body in the country. “It looks like he has already agreed and signed the contract,” Vargas said. “The deal is a four-year contract and in the event that we will make it to the World Cup, there’s an option to be renewed for another year.” Baldwin served as team consultant of Gilas Pilipinas the past two years under head coach Chot Reyes. He is also currently a consultant for Talk ‘N Text in the PBA. A multiple-time champion coach in the National Basketball League in New Zealand, Baldwin was best remembered for steering the Tall Blacks team of New Zealand to a semifinals stint in the 2002 World Championship and led Lebanon to a gold medal finish in the 2010 Stankovic Cup. www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/tab-baldwin-agrees-to-four-year-deal-to-coach-gilas-pilipinas-says-sbp-exec-ricky-vargassports.inquirer.net/170327/tab-baldwin-named-new-gilas-coachBaldwin’s appointment as head coach will be formally announced in a press conference on Tuesday before Game 3 of the 2015 PBA Philippine Cup semifinals series between the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters and the San Miguel Beermen at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Sinag Pilipinas coach: 'We are ready for SEABA' Sinag coach Tab Baldwin believes his team is "ready" for the SEABA tournament. (CNN Philippines) — Even if coach Tab Baldwin had only little time to prepare, he remains confident of Sinag Pilipinas' chances in the upcoming Southeast Asian Basketball Championship (SEABA). “More [time for] preparation would be better, but the players and coaches have worked hard,” the national team head coach told CNN Philippines. “We believe we are ready for the SEABA tournament.” The SEABA, which is the qualifying tournament for the FIBA Asia Championship in China later this year, will run from April 27 to May 1. Games will be played at the OCBC Arena in Kallang, Singapore. Watch: 'Resiliency' is team's identity, says Troy Rosario Despite the limited preparation time, star guard Kiefer Ravena is optimistic the team is now more cohesive from the time when the players first got togther. "Our chemistry is improving. [The team has taken] very positive steps, with the tournament just days away," said Ravena. "That's the most important thing for us, especially [because] we had little time to prepare." Read: 'Hindi kami pwede mag-relax,' says Ravena Aside from Ravena, naturalized Filipino Marcus Douthit and former college standout Ray Parks Jr. will lead Sinag Pilipinas in their SEABA campaign. Completing the 12-man lineup are National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) MVP Scottie Thompson, Mac Belo, Troy Rosario, Kevin Ferrer, Glenn Khobuntin, Almond Vosotros, Norbert Torres, Jio Jalalon, and Russel Escoto. Since only the top three teams will qualify for the FIBA Asia Championship, the national squad's only goal in the SEABA is to bring home the gold. The team leaves on Saturday (April 25) morning, Baldwin will join them after the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner's Cup finals between Talk 'N Text and Rain or Shine. Sinag opens the tournament against Indonesia on April 27 before taking on Laos the following day. They face Malaysia on April 29, Brunei on April 30, and close out the competition against host team Singapore on May 1. cnnphilippines.com/sports/2015/04/24/sinag-pilipinas-baldwin-ravena-parks-ready-seaba-championship.html

Kobe Paras of the Philippines retained his FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championships dunk contest title on Monday, June 8 after pulling out a perfect score with his final attempt in Debrecen, Hungary. .@im_Not_Kobe Paras retains his @fiba U-18 slam dunk title with a perfect score dunk in Hungary #rstream pic.twitter.com/jnF0UfvrA5 — Ryan Songalia (@ryansongalia) June 7, 2015 Paras, 17, needed 3 marks of 10 to overcome the strong challenge from Jalek Felton of the United States, who scored a 29 on his dunk. Paras got the score he needed on his final dunk as he jumped over teammate Ricci Rivero, grabbed the ball from his hands and threw down a two-handed pump slam. Paras earned entry to the semifinal round the day before by finishing in the top 4 of 19 competitors. Paras opened the competition by dunking over 3 teammates and a coach. Agustin Da Costa of Uruguay and Mark Boros of Hungary were both eliminated, with Da Costa earning bronze, to set up the finale. Felton proved he was no slouch himself by catching a pass from a teammate out of bounds for a dunk that put extra pressure on Paras to perform. .@im_Not_Kobe Paras' first dunk over 3 teammates and a coach was pretty epic also #rstream pic.twitter.com/jatBxZZ0fB — Ryan Songalia (@ryansongalia) June 7, 2015 (WATCH: Kobe Paras qualifies for FIBA 3x3 Dunk semis with monster jam) Paras, a student at Cathedral High School in Los Angeles who has committed to playing for the UCLA Bruins, first won the title in 2013. - Rappler.com www.rappler.com/sports/by-sport/basketball/fiba/95629-kobe-paras-fiba-dunk-perfect

Yup, some fans already have him in a Gilas uniform: His name has been submitted in the tentative list of players for the FIBA Asia championship: www.philstar.com/sports/2015/08/25/1491947/clarkson-listed-gilas-rosterThe Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is hoping LA Laker Jordan Clarkson could be added as a regular member of Gilas Pilipinas in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship on Sept. 23-Oct. 3 in Changsha, China. In fact, the national federation included Clarkson’s name in the tentative list of players submitted to FIBA Asia Saturday. From this roster will come the Final 12 for the Changsha meet that serves as the regional qualifier for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The list also includes Andray Blatche, Jimmy Alapag, Gabe Norwood, Sonny Thoss, Calvin Abueva, JC Intal, Aldrech Ramos, Marc Pingris, Jason Castro, Troy Rosario, Matt Ganuelas-Rosser, Gary David, Dondon Hontiveros, Ranidel de Ocampo, Moala Tautuaa, Terrence Romeo, Junmar Fajardo, Marcio Lassiter, Kiefer Ravena, LA Tenorio and Bobby Ray Parks. This means Fajardo, Lassiter, Tenorio and Lee can still make it should they change their mind and decide to join Gilas. Amateur stars Ravena and Parks are also in the roster of aspirants. But the most surprising entry in the list is Clarkson, a Fil-Am holding Philippine passport and could be eligible as a regular member of the national team under the FIBA rules. __________ He still has to get the Lakers permission (there is a mandatory requirement for all LA Lakers to join the media event in Los Angeles on Sep. 30 and their preseason camp starts the following day) to join the competition, as well as finish all his paperwork with FIBA. He is up for a big contract next year so it is important for him to be in the Laker's good graces this season. Great for Gilas to have 2 NBA caliber players in the 2 key positions for the team, point guard and center(Blatche). They will be a threat to make the world championships every year if all his papers are verified. Now if only our local players(or their clubs) have the same desire to play for the national team, we really have a team to reckon with. It is too bad he didn't submit his documents earlier for previous competitions, but better late than never I suppose especially with the caliber of player he is. He is going to get all kind of endorsements in the Philippines when he finally suits up.

I am actually looking forward to the day when we can have Blatche, Fajardo, Clarkson, Parks and Paras in the same starting lineup. That probably will be the most athletic lineup in Asian basketball history and the tallest in Philippine basketball history.

Clarkson joins Gilas drills(not the srimmage) “He wants to participate as much as he can. He didn’t have to come to practice but he came here to work. Who knows what happens in the future? He could join us now or later on,” said Norwood, who, as fans have pointed out, bear some resemblance to Clarkson. “Everybody in the gym today saw how excited he is to represent the Philippines.” Clarkson did not join the scrimmage but was able to break a sweat in a few drills and do extra shooting.
