leoisiah J-Lin's a good player overall but he gives a lot of turnovers. if not for his teammates Shumpert and Chandler he wouldn't be as successful as he is. He fits in well with the Knicks system. If ever he plays for Chinese-Taipei if think Philippines can handle him. but if he chooses to play for China then that would be a problem.. I hope the coach that would replace Toroman in the national team would be the same quality as him or even better. Coach Toroman really upgraded the level of play of our national team. It is clearly seen on how the Rookies from Gilas play in the PBA.

Unfortunately Chot Reyes was announced as the new coach Smart Gilas II, the same coach who led the Philippines to a dismal 9th place finish in a previous tournament. I guess politics won out after all with the Filipino coaches in the MVP group, maneuvering to push Toroman out.

FIBA cracks down on ineligiblesBy Joaquin Henson The Philippine Star Updated May 02, 2012 12:00 AM MANILA, Philippines – A FIBA initiative to strictly impose the provision requiring players with the birth right of dual citizenship to claim two nationalities before turning 16 may adversely affect the eligibility of future Fil-foreigners in the Philippine basketball team, said Smart Gilas team manager Butch Antonio recently. “It’s collateral damage for the Philippines because FIBA wants to crack down on instant citizens becoming national players in other countries,” said Antonio. “There appear to be suspicious cases in Africa, the Middle East and South America. In our case, we can prove the birth right of dual citizenship of our Fil-foreigners. The problem is with the strict enforcement of the FIBA rule, we’ll have to establish two nationalities of Fil-foreigners who are prospective national players before they turn 16. It’s a prospective rule, not retroactive, so our current players like Marcio (Lassiter) and Kelly (Williams) aren’t affected. But future prospects like Chris Banchero and Stanley Pringle may not be eligible unless they filed for dual citizenship before they turned 16.” Antonio cited Rule 21.a. in Chapter 1 of Book 3 of the FIBA rules as saying: “A national team participating in a competition of FIBA may have only one player on its team who has acquired the legal nationality of that country by naturalization or by any other means after having reached the age of 16. This provision applies to any player having the right to acquire a second nationality at birth but who did not lay claim to this right until after having reached the age of 16.” Under the FIBA rule, Smart Gilas will be allowed to play only one naturalized player, in the current lineup Marcus Douthit, and no other future Fil-foreigner who may have chosen two citizenships after turning 16. Antonio said Philippine laws allow a Fil-foreigner to claim two nationalities even after turning 16 and his human right to enjoy the privileges of a Filipino citizen, such as eligibility to represent the country in a sporting event, must be respected. However, Antonio said the issue will not be debated until the timing is right. Meanwhile, Antonio said the Philippines is fortifying its bid to host the FIBA-Asia Championships next year. SBP executive director Sonny Barrios has informed the FIBA-Asia Central Board of the Philippines’ interest and preparedness to host the regional qualifiers for the FIBA 2014 World Championships. The top three finishers of the FIBA-Asia joust will represent Asia in the 24-nation World Championships in Spain. “Mr. Barrios has attended hosting seminars conducted by FIBA in Geneva,” said Antonio. “He is in close contact with FIBA officials both in Geneva and the FIBA-Asia headquarters. Mr. Barrios is spearheading our campaign with all-out support from SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan and vice chairman Ricky Vargas.” How the recent change in leadership in FIBA-Asia with the retirement of Dato Yeoh Choo Hock of Malaysia and installation of Hagop Khajirian of Lebanon as secretary-general will affect the Philippines’ bid is not certain. The Philippines has not hosted the FIBA-Asia Championships, previously known as the Asian Basketball Confederation Championships, since 1973. Its only other hosting was in 1960. China, Lebanon, Qatar and Iran are reportedly keen on hosting the tournament. A perennial host because of superior resources, China has staged the FIBA-Asia Championships in four of the last six competitions, including the last two in Tianjin in 2009 and Wuhan last year. There have been 19 hosts since Manila had its last turn in 1973. Antonio said Smart Gilas coach Chot Reyes will call a meeting of the players named to the national pool shortly after the PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals. Reyes has named 16 players to the pool and Antonio said it could increase to 25 to 30 including the cadet or non-pro picks. Antonio said the plan is for Smart Gilas to play at the Jones Cup in Taipei in August and the Stankovic Cup in Tokyo in September. Spain got the nod over Italy on a vote of 11-8 in the final tally to decide the World Championships host. Spain will use venues in Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Sevilla, Granada and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to play the games. France, Denmark, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Greece and China were others that bid for the hosting rights. China was the first country to be eliminated in the selection process. www.philstar.com/thedeanscorner/articlescontent.aspx?articleid=802759&publicationsubcategoryid=69

They should take their case to the court of arbitration for sport. FIBA's interpretation is pretty extreme and will not bear scrutiny especially compared to other sports. They are violating the rights of players to choose a side before they even reach maturity.
In the meantime the SBP should start scouting early and convince players to commit before the age of 16 while all this is being decided. The best way to do that is to invite these players to the U-16 youth team.

Different sports, different rules on citizenship. Why don't they just follow one rule, maybe let the FIFA rules on citizenship be the standard? Suppose Etheridge can play good basketball; he is Pinoy football-wise but not basketball-wise? Crazy.

Even for me. I say no to naturalized players for Azkals but for Smart Gilas... don't know. Soon this player will play for Smart Gilas if approved. Bill to naturalize NBA player JaVale McGee filedBy Nelson Beltran, philstar.com Posted at 05/15/2012 5:39 PM | Updated as of 05/15/2012 7:10 PM MANILA, Philippines – Determined in his effort to help boost the country’s standing in the international stage, Rep. Robbie Puno has filed in Congress a bill seeking to grant NBA player JaVale McGee Filipino citizenship that will enable him to play for Smart Gilas Pilipinas. Puno, the Antipolo District I representative in the Lower House, filed at 6:45 p.m. yesterday House Bill No. 6169 aimed at making the Denver Nugget center a naturalized Filipino. Puno was the same lawmaker who worked for the naturalization of Marcus Douthit also through legislation (Republic Act 10148). “This bill is in tune with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’ new program maximizing the eligibility of a naturalized player, McGee being only 24 years old,” said Puno. “With the approval of this bill, our country could have two naturalized players who would contribute effective development to the team. The two of them would practice against each other, and also would serve as backup player to each other in case any one of them gets injured,” Puno added. “The addition of another naturalized player would ensure continuity in the program that was started with Marcus Douthit,” Puno also said. Puno cited what the country has gained since Douthit’s addition in the Phl team. He mentioned Smart Gilas’ fourth-place finish in the last Fiba Asia championship, narrowly missing a spot in the World Olympic Qualifier. The outright spot to the Olympics went to tournament champion China. Puno said he’s one with SBP in its bid to sustain the momentum of their strong 2009 Asian joust showing. “It is for this purpose that this bill seeks to grant Philippine citizenship to JaVale McGee,” he said. “Given his remarkable track record in the US pro league, McGee will no doubt be a great asset to our country if given a chance to play for the Philippine team. McGee is widely regarded as the only NBA player eligible for naturalization since majority of NBA centers have played for other national teams,” Puno also said. “Finally, McGee has genuinely expressed his willingness to play for the Philippine team,” Puno added. Puno hopes they can work on McGee’s naturalization in time for the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship which serves as the qualifier for the 2014 FIBA World Cup. “We’ll try to have his naturalization ready for the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship. If not, the important thing is he eventually makes it and we have the option to field the best possible players,” Puno said. Naturalization through legislation is a tedious process, which in the case of Douthit took two years to finish. Still, it’s the easier way compared to administrative and through the courts which both require residency. McGee expressed interest to play for the Philippines after seeing the country and the Filipino people when he joined a group of NBA stars who played Smart Gilas Pilipinas in an exhibition match last year. He returned later to sign a contract as Smart product endorser. He received invitations to the US national team camp in 2009 and 2010 but failed to make the roster. The Flint, Michigan native was the Washington Wizards’ No. 18 pick overall in 2008 out of University of Nevada in Reno. He dreams to play in the Olympics and/or the world championship, hoping to realize this with the Philippine team. “If we don’t naturalize McGee, it is most certain that another country will,” said Puno. www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/05/15/12/bill-naturalize-nba-player-javale-mcgee-filed

Chot enlists 6-foot-5 point guard for Gilas By Nelson Beltran (The Philippine Star) Updated August 06, 2012 12:00 AM Comments (6) View comments SHARE: facebook share facebook Tweet yahoo buzz yahoo! buzz MANILA, Philippines - National coach Chot Reyes has a new Fil-Am recruit in Matt Ganuela Rosser whom he included for the Smart Gilas Pilipinas team competing in the 2012 Williams Jones Cup set Aug. 18-26 in Taipei. Rosser is a 6-foot-5 legitimate point guard fresh from his stint with the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos that he helped rule the US NCAA Division II Championship in 2010. Hes now practicing with the national training team, visited in their session at the Treston Fort gym yesterday morning by NBA Fil-Am champion coach Eric Spoelstra of the Miami Heat. Hes our new find after Gabe Norwood, Kelly Williams, Joe Devance and Jarred Dillinger. Hes born in the Philippines and he holds a Philippine passport, said Reyes of Rosser, back in the country having finished his playing years and business management studies at Cal Poly. He started at point guard spot for the Broncos from his sophomore year in 2009-10. He averaged 24 minutes, 4.0 points and 3.5 rebounds in their NCAA title run. Son of James Rosser and his Filipina mother Gina Ganuela, Matt played for the Temecula Valley Golden Bears in high school. In his senior year as a Golden Bear, he averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds, and made the all-Southwestern League first team. Reyes got to know this Fil-Am through his US networks, like in the case of Norwood, Williams, Devance and Dillinger. Rosser will have his initial action as member of the national pool in the Jones Cup, playing with Marcus Douthit, Ranidel de Ocampo, Larry Fonacier, Sonny Thoss, LA Tenorio, Mac Baracael, Jeff Chan, Gabe Norwood, Rico Villanueva, Gary David, Sol Mercado, JayR Reyes and N-LEX gunner Garvo Lanete www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=835186&publicationSubCategoryId=69Rosser was born in the Philippines, so apparently we don't have to worry about FIBA questioning his eligibility.

With Rosser's addition, that effectively slams the door on Tiu returning to the national team.
