Year: 2012 PLAYER HISTORY COMPETITION SEASON TEAM DIVISION U.S. Soccer Development Academy 2009-2010 U-17/18 U-17/18 During his freshman year, not only was he the Captain for the Varsity Soccer team but also the kicker for the Varsity Football team. Ohjay started playing soccer at age 4 when his brother heard about the sport from friends and later taught him everything he knew. Porteria's first club was called “The Fireballs.” When he turned 6, he joined a travel club called “Team America" where he has played until joining the D.C. United Academy team. He also played for the D.C. United Super-Y-League team (U13) when he was 11 as well as with the Virginia ODP team. _____________________________________ At 16 he would make a good candidate for the U-23 team. He is going to get good training being part of the US develpmental academy system which is reserved for elite players in his age group, and we can look forward to him improving in the years ahead. He was mentioned by Anton Del Rosario as one of the players that impressed him at the US trials in Daly City.

I wonder if the USSF will come calling now. He is still young and could develop so hopefully he keeps and open mind. Yes, if he continues to excel, the USSF might call him up for the U-17 residency program in Florida or possibly the U-20 since he is about to turn 17 next month. Fortunately that doesn't cap tie him if it happens. The fact that he showed up at the trials means he and his family are very interested in joining the Azkals as unlike the California kids, they had to spend their own way flying to San Fran from Virginia. We also don't know whether he was born in the Philippines or the US. In Europe we have had kids actually turn down call ups from their respective country's youth organizations like Manny Ott and Jason De Jong because they prefer to play for the Philippines. I am not saying that will be the case here but maybe we should cap him ASAP before he changes his mind. ;D One of the reasons Austria called up David Alaba at 16 to play for the national men's team was to prevent other countries from considering him. Observers in Germany including Coach Weiss said that if we had scouted him earlier and talked to his family, it was possible he would have chosen us and not Austria, and that is why they are saying tournaments such as the Nagold Cup are essential in uncovering such talents when they are younger. BTW melbmke, the USSF is quite deep enough as it is. Without a professional league to develop players, the Philippines needs kids like this to chose them than a more developed country like the US.

I agree but since he is so young I would want to make sure he understands the implications of playing cap tieing fixtures for the Azkals.

Height: 5'6" Weight: 137 lbs Jose is indeed in D.C. United's academy team where he has scored a few goals. It would be great if he stretched a few more inches in height.

Thanks for the research, this is Oj's mom and yes, we are flying to Manila per invitation from Mr. Palami for the Men's Team. I hope OJ will make it. He was born in the US just days after we migrate. Last name indeed is perfectly meant for soccer.

Last name indeed is perfectly meant for soccer. Congratulations on your son being chosen at the trials Mrs. Porteria and good luck at the camp. He has a very good chance of making the U-23 team for the SEA games and hopefully be considered to the men's team at some point. You must be very proud of him making the US Developmental Soccer Academy, as part of DC United as only the best young players in the US get accepted there. You must be even prouder that he was chosen by the Philippine national team to the training camp in Manila. Does your son have any plans of turning pro at some point maybe even with DC United or does he plan to go to college first?

Last name indeed is perfectly meant for soccer. Good luck to OJ in doing well at the Azkals camp. Getting to the DC United academy is no easy feat so I'm sure he is good. As a parent from the US a big sacrifice from you has been the pay-to-play system, unlike much of Europe where cost would never be prohibitive to the budding player. So for that -- I salute you for shouldering the cost of trips, camps, donations, fees, but then I also congratulate you for getting him this far.

We have another one for you Mike in Neil Ignacio. Neil in fact was part of the US U-16 pool. Both of their parents are proud Filipinos and were happy that their son are being given a chance to represent the country.

Hell if I was eligible for PI and any good I would give it a thought too. I just hope these young kids understand the options and choices they have.

OJ soccer tricks
OJ Porteria hurt his knee on the first day of camp and has been unable to join a lot of the drills. He has been doing a lot of rehabbing in the sidelines. Doesn't look promising in terms of making the final roster for WC qualifying but is definitely a prospect for the U-23 team.
