It's been a while since I last visited the forum. Glad to be back. My apologies if there's a thread similar to this one already (tried to find one, couldn't locate any).
The reason why I asked the question is definitely not to bash our NT coach. It is certainly to discuss openly and fairly to you guys my opinion on why there's a need to replace Coach Weiss.
Filipino fans (most of them) aren't at all adept to what being a fan meant. They view winning as a prerequisite to support and loyalty to club and NT has been on and off to some.
I'm a footy fan for a long time and I support the NT tremendously, I just think that we need a new coach. Coach Weiss, in my opinion, does not meet my standard to be our NT's coach. Here's why:
1. During the SEA games, he only have two (2) Central Defenders and only one of them is playing regularly (Van Bossche) and the other one (Basa), I've only seen him play like one time.
2. It is a short tourney. Why would you bring 3 GK's and just a handful of defenders as we know that defense (back 4 particularly) are the most carded player in the squad. Suspension and injuries are common to these players.
3. Another point is that only one natural central defender is playing regularly on our squad with the other pair is a make shift of either a Left-back, Right-back or a Defensive Midfielder. As we know, central defenders are players that has a different skills set than the other positions in the squad. Their instincts and reactions are very much higher than other positions and if you replace them by other players that doesn't have the same orientation, disaster will naturally follow as what we have witnessed during the SEA games.
4. Where's Poetshke? He was amazing during the Long Teng Cup. Where is he? Why is he not included in the lineup?
5. Captaincy - It was originally given to Matt Hartmann. He is not my first choice to be the Captain of the U23 squad. My first choice has always been Jason De Jong. Sure, there were issues on De Jong on his attitude in the past but, I was hoping that he'll tone down his attitude more knowing that he has the responsibilities now of a Captain. This point however, since I'm not privy with what's going on inside the NT, I can give Coach Weiss the benefit of a doubt that he sees something in Matt as the Captain of the team.
6. Playing away from your natural position. You won't win many games if you have too many players playing away from their natural position. It'll be awkward for them especially the fact that they don't have enough time to practice.
7. Coach Weiss possible distrust to local-based Pinoys? I sense the distrust of Coach Weiss on the local-based talents. Let's check the example of Basa. I've seen him play once in UFL and he is a bit stocky for a Central Defender. A bit slow, I might add. But having to play him over De Jong in the Central Defense position may not be too much of a bad idea.
8. Coach Strategy? I don't see one except maybe to play offensive football since we have tons of quality offensive players but not much quality defense. If you want to play offensive football and not worry much about defense, I think it's only appropriate to play possession football to protect our make-shift back 4.
9. Our back 4 lacks pretty much everything. I don't even see the form. Also, their positions have been changed God knows how many times. One minute I've seen De Murga play RB, then a few minutes later he's a LB and then all of a sudden he becomes a DM. I know a DM covers a lot of ground and covers a lot of positions especially the back four but based his movements, I can say that he changed his positions in one match many times as well as every match. Van Bossche has changed his position as well from CD to RB. I don't know why. Gives me headache. The defense is in complete disarray. Like I said, I didn't see the back four keep their form longer than one minute and that's only on every restart.
10. Use of Mark Hartmann as a Striker during the first match simply didn't work. He has the strength to out-muscle the defenders but he doesn't have the pace nor the timing to beat the traps and the defenders. Also, Mark is a quality behind the strikers in supplying the passes and those long shots. We haven't maximized Mark's full potential when Coach Weiss moved him on the striker position vs Vietnam.
11. After their second defeat, Coach Weiss declared publicly that he has given up the bid for semis and was quoted on saying, that our chances for semis bid, has been gone and is looking forward on having the local-based players more quality time, or something to that effect. This is the first time that I've heard that the Coach was the first to give up on a campaign even though there's still a chance of us qualifying no matter how slim the chances are. It's a little bit depressing to hear him say those words. It's a little bit unprofessional from my POV. I'm glad though that they didn't surrender and kept fighting, but I believe, the damage MAY have already been done.
My piece. Looking forward for your reactions. I'm here to debate the issue not to attack anyone personally. Many thanks.
