Davao Norte unveils new sports complex
by RG Alama
Davao City (5 April) -- Davao del Norte Province has unveiled its planned new sports complex which will rise from the former fire-razed complex in Mankilam, Tagum City.
A scale model of the planned sports complex was presented last Thursday (April 3) during the opening program of the Davao del Norte Sports Summit which was graced by Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William Butch Ramirez, Mt. Everest climber and sports hero Pastor Emata and Davao del Norte top officials led by Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, Vice-Governor Victorio Suaybaguio and provincial sports coordinator Anthony del Rosario.
Estimated at P270-million the sports complex is expected to be completed by 2010. It will include a 10,000 capacity grandstand and bleachers, eight-lane rubberized track and field oval, olympic-sized swimming pool, basketball, volleyball and lawn tennis courts plus other support facilities and infrastructures.
According to Anthony del Rosario, the sports complex will complement the other sports facilities located in the province that included the Panabo Multi-Purpose Tourism Cultural and Sports Center and the Tagum City Volleydrome.
The Panabo multi-purpose center recently hosted a PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) game while the Volleydrome has become the official training and competition center for the national beach volleyball team.
With the sports facilities, the province is eyeing to host the 2010 Palarong Pambansa. PSC chair Ramirez hailed the sports complex and said that it could become the training ground for the region's athletes. In an earlier interview, the chair expressed admiration for the initiative of the province.
Before he joined PSC, Ramirez a well-known basketball coach in Davao City was tasked by the City Government of Davao to look into the possibilities of a planned sports complex for the City. Hit with snags and delays the Davao City sports complex still remains to be a dream.
In contrast to Davao City, the Provincial Board of Davao del Norte has given Governor del Rosario an authority to loan of about P500-million. The amount according to the Governor will be spent on the sports complex and also to purchase heavy equipment for the province that could be used to build and maintain infrastructure like farm-to-market roads, irrigation and drainage canals. P320-M modern sports complex to rise in Davao Norte by JMD Abangan Tagum City (2 July) -- Two years from now, the P320 million state-of-the-art Davao del Norte Sports Complex will rise in a 12-hectare lot across the Provincial Capitol to train local players to compete in the international arena. To be constructed by administration in cooperation with Solflores and Partners Asia Foundation, the Sports Complex is expected to change Davao del Norte's landscape into a "new hub of technical advancement." Unveiled in yesterday's 41st Araw ng Davao del Norte by sports enthusiast Senator Pia Cayetano together with Governor Rodolfo P. del Rosario, the design showed a modern sports complex that put together restaurants, offices, boutiques, features for leisure activities with sports facilities. Senator Cayetano pledged to put in an initial funding of P10 million for the sports complex completion, believing that "sports is an essential part of people's wellness and health." In an interview, Davao del Norte sports coordinator Antonio Rafael del Rosario (son of Gov. del Rosario) said the P320 million funding for the construction of the sports complex would be taken from the P500 million loan of the provincial government from Land Bank of the Philippines. Huge amount would be needed to finish its construction but the young del Rosario said "the facility is needed to push a comprehensive sports program to fully develop our athletes." "Our objective is to develop our players to compete in the international level," he said. "We cannot achieve such objective without the facility," he added. Noting that the "Sangguniang Panlalawigan has approved the project" and funding has been made available, he is optimistic that the sports complex will be made ready by the 1st quarter of 2010 to host not only local sports match but also regional and international competitions. Giving a preview of the sports complex construction, Provincial Engineer Josie-Jean Rabanoz described the facility as a "landmark that will change the architectural legacy of Davao del Norte and the entire country." To entail a P250 million funding, its 1st phase will cover the construction of a main bleacher building to accommodate 20,000 people and to serve as the automatic retractable entrance portal to the sports complex. Such facility can also serve as a multi-purpose building for offices, convention center, function rooms, among others. Other items for construction in the first phase will include a small bleacher, a rubberized oval track/soccer field, a modern aquatic center events which includes one Olympic size swimming pole, warm-up pool and a diving pool. A powerhouse and a generator set will also be provided to back up power requirement of the sports complex and a fire fighting system based on international standards will also be put in place. Rabanoz further explained that the second phase of the sports complex construction will cover face-lifting of the RDR Gym, setting up of a huge parking area to accommodate a thousand vehicles, putting in place a stylish administrative and corporate building as well as landscaping. A major component of Governor Del Rosario's development agenda dubbed as the RDR WHEELS, the sports complex is seen to stimulate local economy, creating local jobs, boosting local enterprise and attracting tourists and sports aficionado. I'm not happy with the design. The football pitch cannot hold a large number of spectators.

the design is still outdated...we should look at the stadiums of our neighboring ASEAN countries...a full around bleachers will be a good design for a new era of Philippine stadiums...enough for the solo grandstand design...

I live "near" the project, dingodile5; I hope you know I'm from Davao. Anyway, the new sports complex in Tagum City is going into its "Phase 1," that is the grandstand with the football pitch. According to my friend who lives there, they're still using the football pitch in the old sports complex which is in another barangay for some fixtures such as the Davao qualifiers for this year's PFF U23 Suzuki Cup. It will be expected to be complete by 2015 or 2016.

We haven't talked about the 2 basketball courts, a tennis court, a volleyball court, a baseball field and an Olympic-size swimming pool. The grandstand, I heard, should have a 35,000 capacity. But it's not yet the final numbers as they are still considering some budget concerns with the local government there. I do hope they host an Azkals game once it's done.

Wow 35000 I think this may be the home stadium in Davao del Norte if they have a team in UFL. Another benefit of this project is hosting of major international tournament is very possible since our facilities is increasing. I hope the national government and PSC will help finance this. This project is a big boom not just for football but also for other sports in Davao region. Well financial matters is still the main problem in infrastructure projects

Tagum City is actually bidding to host Palarong Pambansa by at least two years from now, so I'm hoping the sports complex should be ready enough.
The 35,000 capacity is if the seats won't be following FIFA standard. If it follows FIFA standard, it could only seat 10,000 to 12,000.
