Under-18s: Everton 1-1 Wanderers Posted: Tue 27 Nov 2012 Author: BWFC Staff
Luke Woodland on target for scholars in draw at Everton Wanderers’ under-18 side were held to a 1-1 draw with Everton at the weekend.
In a promising opening half, Luke Woodland’s long-range shot cannoned in-off the post to give David Lee and Tony Kelly’s side the lead after 25 minutes.
Bolton continued to enjoy the better of the play after the interval but ultimately paid the price for not adding to their solitary goal when the hosts drew level on 85 minutes.
“We created several good chances in the first half,” academy head coach Lee explained. “We passed the ball well in the first half, but couldn't take advantage of our good play.
“The second half was a battle, with us again having a couple of chances.
“Overall, it was pleasing to go to Everton and earn a point against good opponents.
“We move onto the last game of the first phase of games at home to West Brom, before the FA Youth Cup against Portsmouth on Monday 10 December.”

Under-21s: West Brom 2-1 Wanderers Posted: Mon 03 Dec 2012 Author: BWFC Staff
Wanderers’ under-21s suffered a narrow defeat to West Bromwich Albion at the Baggies’ training ground on Monday afternoon.
First team members Andy Lonergan, Joe Riley and Marvin Sordell all played 90 minutes for John Henry’s side during their 2-1 league defeat.
The Trotters took the lead after 16 minutes when Joe McKee’s cross-cum-shot was fumbled and Blakeman was on hand to fire home from six yards, but a Ben Hampson own goal leveled the scores for the home side soon after.
And Adil Nabi would put the Baggies in front ten minutes later when he curled the ball into the top-right hand corner from 25 yards to end an eventful first half.
The Trotters continued to manufacture chances in the second period, with left-back Andy Kellett repeatedly breaking forward down the left and the full-back fired a left-foot effort just over the bar from 20 yards with 50 minutes played.
Wanderers pushed for an equaliser in the second period, but failed to find a way past the Albion 'keeper as the Whites tasted defeat in the Midlands.
Bolton’s final Group One league tie is on Thursday evening against Everton at the County Ground. Regardless of the result, Wanderers will be competing in Qualification Group Tier Two as the league structure is split into three groups after Christmas.
West Brom:Lewis; C Jones, D Daniels, C Dawson, Garmston; O’Neil, Birch; Roofe; A Nabi, Wedderburn (A Jones 81); Sawyers. (Subs not used: Palmer, Barrow, Pace, Smart)

Bolton have handed professional contracts to academy trio Zach Clough, Chris Lester and Luke Woodland.
Clough and Lester have both been in superb form this season, with Clough's goals helping Wanderers under-18s qualify for the Elite Group of the Premier League U18s competition.
The attacking duo have been handed two-year contracts at the Reebok Stadium along with Woodland, who received a call-up to the England under-18 squad earlier this season.
Tom Youngs, Niall Maher, Glenn Matthews and Jan-Ole Sievers have all been granted third-year scholarship deals, with first team manager Dougie Freedman set to run the rule over the quartet in the 12 months ahead. Dylan Wolstenholme will leave the club at the end of the season

Three baby Bolton Wanderers handed grown-up deals By Mark Yesilevskiy on Apr 3 2013,
We have followed David Lee and Tony Kelly's Bolton Wanderers U18 side fairly closely this season. The young Whites did exceptionally well in the first half of the season, finishing second in their group table. The second half of the season, where Bolton play other top development teams, has not been so kind to them but there is good reason for that. A few of the U18s' (arguably) brightest stars have seen extended time with the U21s and one has been named in a few first team matchday squads this season.
As a result of their hard work, obvious talent, and enormous potential, Bolton Wanderers have rewarded a trio of youngsters have been handed professional deals with the club. Per the Bolton News, Zach Clough, Chris Lester, and Luke Woodland were all offered professional deals while four other youngsters (Tom Youngs, Niall Maher, Glenn Matthews and goalkeeper Jan-Ole Sievers) were offered one year extensions to stay with the academy. Those four will have the ability to try for professional deals next year.
The move is a testament to the quality of Bolton's academy under the stewardship of Jimmy Phillips, Tony Kelly, David Lee, and Sammy Lee. Where once the only academy products of any real note were Nicky Hunt, Kevin Nolan, and Ricardo Vaz Te, the club are bringing many more through. Josh Vela and Joe Riley are two of the more recent names to get first team chances while Alex McQuade, Sanmi Odelusi, and Andy Kellett were offered similar terms at the start of the season. Still, Trotters fans can expect more names to join those ranks soon.

Young Wanderers trio rewarded with professional contracts
10:30pm Tuesday 2nd April 2013 in Latest By David Pye
A TRIO of Wanderers’ successful Under-18s squad have been handed two-year professional contracts at the club, and four others have accepted one-year extensions to their current scholarship deals, The Bolton News can reveal.
Highly-rated forwards Zach Clough and Chris Lester, who was in the squad for last night’s Championship clash with Huddersfield, have been rewarded for their displays in the U18s and U21s ranks this campaign.
Luke Woodland, who was called up to the England U18s squad earlier this season, has also been offered a two-year contract despite missing several weeks through injury.
In addition to those three, Tom Youngs, Niall Maher, Glenn Matthews and keeper Jan-Ole Sievers will all stay on for a third year as scholars with the incentive to also gain professional deals if they impress Dougie Freedman.
The only second-year apprentice not to be offered any terms is Dylan Wolstenholme, but U18s coach David Lee says that was solely based on the strength in depth in midfield rather than a reflection of his displays.
It is a big pat on the back for Lee, Tony Kelly and academy chiefs Jimmy Phillips and Sammy Lee to see so many kept on after a season that has seen the U18s reach the quarter finals of the FA Youth Cup and compete in the Elite Group of the Premier League’s U18s competition.

BWFC Guest Article: What To Do About The Squad? Writer: Rob Moss Date:Wednesday September 4 2013 Thanks for the article, Rob Moss and thanks for the work put into devising it. These are worrying times for Whites' supporters but with fans like ours, who care as much as they obviously do, it gives us hope. Enjoy... Following the total failure to move on our dead-wood on transfer deadline day and with the loan window opening in 7 days` time, I was having a look through our squad list. Which got me thinking... What on earth can we actually do about the squad? We have three goalkeepers. Ádám Bogdán, Andy Lonergan and Jay Lynch. Jay Lynch is only 20 years old and it's important to have a young goalkeeper if only to ensure that the reserves can continue to play football. We know that Bogdán has his faults, but he's probably all we can afford. And we know that Lonergan has stepped in and performed admirably when called upon, but also that he's not quite up to Bogdán's quite variable standard. And we still need a substitute in case Bogdán gets injured. Can we do anything about the goalkeeping position? Probably not. Other areas are more desperate. Okay. So what about left back? Well, we have one. Marc Tierney. And I think he's done pretty well so far this season, it would be difficult and perhaps unfair to blame our defensive failings upon him. We don't really have the funds to go and get a better one even if we loan him out. Other areas are more desperate. So how about right back? Well, it's not much better - we have two, and one of them is injured and the other one is rubbish. Joe Riley would no doubt be getting a look in right now, but there's no point worrying about that because we're unlikely to see him play this season. And Tyrone Mears... well, the less said the better. So we've ended up with a centre back, Alex Baptiste, filling in. Could we do something about this in the loan market, get ourselves a half-decent recognised right back? Probably... but we won't. Other areas are more desperate. Let's stick to the sides of the pitch for now. The left side of midfield. We have surprisingly few left-footed players in the squad. Moritz, Ream, Lonergan and Tierney are left-footed and Holden and Odelusi are ambidextrous. Only one of these is an out-and-out left winger - obviously Odelusi. His youth and inexperience mean that he gets overlooked for the spot on the left wing by many a right-footed player. Ordinarily the spot is taken by Lee or Eagles, with the opposing winger position going to the other player, and Pratley appearing somewhere when one of them is out. Should we sign a winger? Well, if we do, he should at least be left-footed. But we won't. Other areas are more desperate. Okay, so we hop on over to the right side of midfield. Here is where Chris Eagles normally plies his trade, with Pratley or Lee sometimes filling in, and Hayden White and Chris Lester waiting in the reserves for a chance to shine which will probably never come, and possibly Robert Hall if it turns out right wing is his best position. Should we sign a right winger? No. Other areas are more desperate. Let's look up front for a moment. We have a surprisingly massive number of strikers on the books. David N'Gog, Marvin Sordell, Jermaine Beckford, Craig Davies, Robert Hall, Michael O'Halloran, Tom Eaves, Zach Clough and Conor Wilkinson are all contracted to the club, with only Sordell out on loan. One could argue that Hall is really a winger, but to be honest we've not really seen enough of him yet to pass judgement. Still - 7 or 8 strikers who could all pull on the shirt, in theory, next Saturday afternoon and go to try to stick the ball in the back of the net. Should we sign another striker? We've got enough really. It would be great to get rid of maybe five of them and replace them with one good one, but I don't think we will because nobody seems to want them. Other areas are more desperate. How about central midfield? Well, we have André Moritz, Mark Davies, Stuart Holden, Darren Pratley, Josh Vela, Ján Greguš, Jay Spearing, Medo Kamara, Keith Andrews and Luke Woodland on the books. Of those, Moritz and Davies fulfil the same role - creative midfield play, crafting something for the strikers to latch onto with something other than their head. Davies is, of course, out until December, and Holden won't be back until next season. Keith Andrews is fortunately out on loan, and Luke Woodland isn't ready yet. But that still leaves us, realistically, with Moritz taking one central midfield spot when he's fit until December when Davies should replace him leaving Moritz as cover, and Pratley, Vela, Greguš, Spearing and Medo fighting it out for the remaining spot. Okay, so that little list has three of our "best" players so far this season in there all after a single shirt. An embarrassment of riches, perhaps? And now we find ourselves in the area of the pitch where we are at our most vulnerable. In front of our own goalmouth. The centre of defence. The rock on which great teams of years gone by have been built. The players who have the opposition front line in their back pocket. The guys who give you confidence to charge up the field in search of a second or third goal, because you know the two lads at the back have got you covered. Or... not. Ah, yes. Matt Mills, Alex Baptiste, David Wheater, Tim Ream, Zat Knight, Cian Bolger and Oscar Threlkeld are the central defenders at the club at the present time. Of those, Baptiste finds himself having to cover for Mears' inadequacies, Bolger and Threlkeld aren't ready yet, and Mills, Wheater, Ream and especially Knight have been the subject of so much discussion these past few days in the wake of the 4-1 disaster at Ewood Park. Are any of the four senior central defenders at our football club capable of instilling the same confidence Bruno N'Gotty, Gerry Taggart, Florent Laville or pretty much any regular central defender from the pre-OC era did into our forward players? I'm afraid not. All four have proven themselves unable to do what needs to be done, which is keep clean sheets, or at least look like they might do every now and then. We've seen Dawson do the job on his own, on our own turf at least, for the latter part of last season. But he isn't here, and he won`t be coming any time soon if the rumours about Gabriel Tama? are correct. So what can we do? Nobody wants these central defenders, right? They're all so bad they're going to either play or sit in the reserves for the rest of their contracts, right? Mills 2015, Wheater 2016, Ream 2015 and Captain Zat 2014? That's absolutely fine. It's not Dougie Freedman's fault that some idiot signed Mills, Ream and Knight and gave them inexcusably long and incredibly high-wage contracts. It's not his fault either that Wheater's return to the first team has been so disappointing - his total absence of pace since his return suggests there's probably some permanent damage there and he'll probably never be the same again. But we don't need these players taking off our hands. It would be lovely if we could, but the will just isn't there from any manager who could afford to do it. So how do we plug the gap at the back when we have no money? Simple. We loan out Pratley or Medo. Possibly even both. We have so many central midfielders it's getting to the point of being ridiculous. We don't need them all. Four is plenty; perhaps five when you have two long-term absentees amongst their number. It's all well and good saying that we can't loan out Pratley or Medo, or both, because we need the cover - but do we? Do we really need a saleable asset sat on the bench when we can't afford to fill the gaping chasm in the heart of our defence? Have they really brought so much solidity that you could argue they're worth more than a central defender, or brought such creative genius that it could only be the strikers' fault that the goals aren't flying in? And would you be that upset to see Vela on the bench and getting the occasional run out? No. They've sat in the middle of the park, run around a bit, not stopped that much getting past them and so put the defence under more pressure, created hardly any chances and so put the strikers under more pressure, and yet people will probably even pay a loan fee for them because they`ve looked a bit impressive on the ball and their agents could make a good video. Luke Woodland playing regularly for the Bolton U21. Hasn't made the first team bench yet, the next step in progression to moving up the ranks. Bolton currently plays in the Championship and is 6 points and 4 teams above relegation. I don't think they'll be relegated, but this position is a far cry from when they were in the Premier League in 2012. Might be a good time for the Azkals to bring in Luke to see what he can do. 2014 promises to be a good and busy year for the team, with both the Suzuki Cup and the Challenge Cup in the calendar. link

Holden Returns to U.S. for Right Knee Tests Associated Press, March 5th, 2014 6:10PM
Bolton and USA international midfielder Stuart Holden has traveled back the U.S. to have an examination after experiencing discomfort in his right knee during a U-21 game on Monday night. Holden started the home game against Everton in what was his first appearance since tearing his right ACL during the USA’s 1-0 win against Panama in the Concacaf Gold Cup final last August. The 28-year-old was in discomfort when he fell to the turf in the 23rd minute and was replaced by Luke Woodland. Bolton confirmed on Tuesday that the 28-year-old will undergo a scan before meeting with Dr. Bert Mandelbaum, the surgeon who operated on him last summer.
This was the latest in a string of injuries for the USA midfielder. Holden first had his right leg broken on a tackle by the Netherlands' Nigel de Jong during an international friendly in March 2010, but returned to make the U.S. World Cup team, where he made one appearance in the Americans' 1-1 draw against England. He then injured his left knee against Manchester United during a tackle by Jonny Evans in March 2011, returned from surgery for a League Cup game against Aston Villa that September, but needed more surgery eight days later.
Holden would come back again in January 2013 to make three substitute appearances for Bolton, four starts during a one-month loan to Sheffield Wednesday, and another short substitute stint for Bolton. He rejoined the U.S. national team as a substitute in an exhibition against Belgium on May 29, then played extensively in the Gold Cup before suffering the ACL tear to his right knee in the competition’s final.

U21s: Reading 4-1 Bolton Posted: Mon 10 Mar 2014 Author: Sean Stevens Youngsters defeated by their Reading counterparts in Basingstoke IN BRIEF Wanderers’ under-21 side suffered a 4-1 defeat away at Reading on Monday evening. The hosts had taken an early lead from the penalty spot through De’Jaune Taylor-Crossdale, but Luke Woodland drew the Whites level on the stroke of half time. His effort was to be in vain however as Taylor-Crossdale doubled his tally before goals from Shepperd Murombedzi and Jake Cooper wrapped up all three points for the Berkshire outfit. FIRST HALF On a clear night in Basingstoke, the Whites started the better of the two sides as Zach Clough was fouled on the edge of the box by defender Cooper, with the following free kick resulting in a passage of play which culminated in an Oscar Threlkeld diving header that went narrowly wide. During the opening quarter of the game the visitors were well and truly in control, with Andy Kellett advancing and perfecting a whipped ball across the face of keeper Stuart Moore’s box that no one was able to meet. The pressure did result in an opening goal, but against the run of play it fell in the Royals’ favour as Kellett brought down Taylor-Crossdale in the area with 18 minutes gone, with the frontman taking it upon himself to convert the spot kick past Bolton keeper Harry Campbell. Following the goal, the visitors found themselves on the back foot with Reading undoubtedly in the ascendancy as first Taylor-Crossdale and then Bogdan Vastsuk enjoyed long range efforts which failed to test Campbell. Midfielder Yannick Bastos was the next Whites player to have an attempt following the hosts’ pressure, but his right footed inside shot found Moore's hands comfortably. With half an hour gone, some impressive footwork from the corner of the box from Clough allowed the striker to get away a shot which bounced in front of Moore but also past the post. Kellett then went on a mazy run, skipping past two men before playing the ball into the feet of Woodland but the resulting shot was blocked at close range. With the game becoming lively and open, Wanderers did pull level on the stroke of half time as Woodland released an unstoppable effort from 30 yards out which flew straight into the corner of the Reading net past the outstretched Moore to ensure that the visitors went into the break high on confidence.SECOND HALF Moments after the restart and the visiting bench were left perplexed after Kellett was brought down inside the box, but the referee remained unmoved and waved play on. Following a bright start from Wanderers, a well worked set piece initially taken by Woodland saw Iliev narrowly miss out on Clough’s pull back at the far post.
With the Whites sensing blood, Tom Walker was introduced into the fold for Yannick Bastos to provide more firepower upfront. As the half wore on, Bolton were controlling the pace of the game and Iliev was unlucky to blast over from six yards out upon leaning back on the damp playing surface with the inside of his boot. Clough was creative throughout and his through ball on the hour found substitute Walker who with his pace got on the end of the neat pass, but his momentum had the ball bounce off his shin and into Moore’s hands. Having withstood pressure from the visitors, Reading’s Taylor-Crossdale had a crisp dipping shot from 30 yards but Campbell used his both hands to push the ball over the bar. After denying him once however, the Bolton goalkeeper was beaten just moments later when Taylor-Crossdale again, same as with his previous effort, unleashed a ferocious mirror effort which left Campbell stranded and had the home side in front. The goal sparked a difficult spell for the Whites’ youngsters, with Murombedzi firing home from a similar position as Taylor-Crossdale did for the Royals’ second before Cooper lost his man at the back post and beat Campbell at his near post with a well taken half volley at the near post to make it four with ten minutes remaining. Conor Wilkinson was introduced inside the closing stages and almost added to Bolton’s tally late on as he jumped to meet Chris Lester’s cross, but his header failed to test Moore as Reading ran out winners on the night. Bolton: Campbell, Threlkeld, Kellett, White, Holding, Woodland, Lester, Bastos (Walker), Clough (Wilkinson), Iliev, Maher. Reading: Moore, Sheppard, Griffin, Collins, Cooper, Sweeney, Ofori, Murombedzi, Taylor-Crossdale, Vastsuk, Williams Read more at www.bwfc.co.uk/news/article/u21s-reading-4-1-bolton-10314-1411787.aspx#RilHctODhqvymuIl.99
