PFF to sign P300-M pact with ABS-CBN By Cedelf P. Tupas Philippine Daily Inquirer 10:00 pm | Saturday, January 14th, 2012 0shareNew0 MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Football Federation is poised to sign a four-year extension worth at least P300 million with television giant ABS-CBN for the airing of matches of the men’s national team as well as its football activities starting this year. PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta Friday night said the federation will also stand to receive P1.2 million per Azkals match from the network, which is also required to give P1 million worth of football equipment that will be divided among its 33 member-associations. “They (ABS-CBN) had a better offer,” said Araneta. TV5 also tabled an offer to the PFF but the Federation’s Board opted for ABS-CBN, which held the rights to Azkals matches starting last year during the AFC Challenge Cup. The PFF board has authorized Araneta and Azkals manager Dan Palami to negotiate with ABS-CBN before finalizing the contract. Meanwhile, Araneta said that the PFF has ratified the appointment of NCRFA president Rolly Tulay as general secretary, replacing Chito Manuel, who will be assigned to the PFF’s grassroots committee. Former president Johnny Romualdez has also been appointed treasurer of the PFF. Araneta and Palami were also able to thresh out scheduling concerns with the United Football League regarding the release of players for the build-up to the AFC Challenge Cup. Araneta said the clubs will allow standouts like Phil and James Younghusband to train with the national team for three days and two days with the club. “There are so many football activities and the meeting with the UFL is a step in the right direction,” said Araneta. Araneta said the UFL clubs will also allow players to be released for the 12-day training camp in Dubai, where the Azkals are slated to play three matches including one against Serbian powerhouse Partizan Belgrade on Feb. 6. sports.inquirer.net/31681/pff-to-sign-p300-m-pact-with-abs-cbn

ABS-CBN, Azkals ink pactPHILIPPINE Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said the PFF has approved an agreement with ABS-CBN that will allow the giant broadcast network to telecast most of the Philippine Azkals games over the next four years. Araneta disclosed that the PFF board had already approved the agreement. “We have only to finalize the contract, which would give ABS-CBN the right to cover all the Azkal games plus other football activities,” Araneta told the Manila Standard. He clarified that AKTV IBC13 of the ABC 5 Group had the exclusive television rights for the Asian Football Federation Suzuki Cup, but ABS-CBN will have coverage rights for the local Under 22, Under 23 versions of the Suzuki Cup. “ABS-CBN is giving us P75million worth of airtime, which is what we have to discuss because the others are straightforward,” said Araneta. “We are more interested in the concept of promoting football as well as using the P75 million worth of airtime.” Araneta said there is growing interest in the upcoming Kia Rio Cup between Azkals United vs the South Korean squad Icheon Citizen at 7 p.m. on Jan. 21 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. The match is the brainchild of ABS-CBN vice president for Sports Peter Musngi, Dragon Promotions Chief Executive Officer Cindy Lee and its founder and world-class pool player Charlie Williams. The match is made possible by the cooperation of the PFF and the sponsorship of Kia Motors. The head coach of the Korea National Under 20 men’s team, who is also Head Coach of the Korea National women’s team in Young Ki Lee is one of the key figures in organizing the event. Lee noted that the Philippines and South Korea have not played for a very long time. Filipinos and Koreans should feel the patriotism in their hearts during the game. That’s another reason why npeople are looking forward to this game. But th goodwill and charity is also in all our minds and the combination of these factors is why I believe this event will bring our two countries further together. It could be the start of a nrw improved relationship between the Philippines, Korea and the Koreans living here.” -Ronnie Nathanielszwww.manilastandardtoday.com/insideSports.htm?f=2012/january/17/sports6.isx&d=2012/january/17

Just locked the poll as the deal has finally been sealed. ABS-CBN will be the broadcast partner of the PFF for the next 4 years.
That's already done, although TV5 already had the exclusive rights to broadcast the AFF Suzuki Cup late last year, which means only a significant portion of TV viewers will be able to watch this crucial tournament for the nationals. But with this deal with ABS-CBN means that people will also see TV coverage of the PFF's national tournaments such as the U22/U23 Suzuki Cup and possibly the PFF-Smart Club Championships (although I think TV5 will also have the rights to cover it because it's currently sponsored by the Pangilinan-led company).
The four-year extension (2012-2016), however, would indicate that the network would be able to broadcast some of these tournaments if the national team be able to qualify or be able to participate for them: 1. Long Teng Cup from 2012 to 2015 2. 2014 AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers in 2013 (if they aren't able to win the 2012 finals) 3. 2014 AFC Challenge Cup finals (if they qualify) 4. 2015 AFC Asian Cup (if they win either 2012 or 2014 Challenge Cup) 5. 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia qualifiers in 2015 It's been a good move having a very long deal with the ABS-CBN network as this will encourage more viewers here in the Philippines and abroad (through TFC) to watch the national team play. Along with the clause that the network pays the PFF Php 1.2 million (about US$ 22,000) after every national team fixture (except the Suzuki Cup), and that it should give Php 1 million worth of equipments shared along 33 member FAs, this will definitely help the PFF augment its expenses for the years to come.
What suggestions you would give to ABS-CBN for this deal? Share your thoughts here!

What suggestions you would give to ABS-CBN for this deal? Share your thoughts here! I hope they won't include Dyan Castillejo and Ronnie Nathanielsz in the broadcast team during Azkals games. Or as an alternative, let the two study football before covering the games. Football is quite new to a lot of Filipino audience, and we need commentators who knew football by heart.

They should also televise the games of UAAP football in the elimination rounds

Haha. Dyan Castillejo irritates me to heck. Ronnie Nathanielsz also kinda irritates me, but he's passable.
Bob Guerrero is ok, I guess. He just doesn't have the nice "announcer voice", but his commentating is ok. Darren Hartman should speak more.
But overall, I'm fine with ABS getting the contract. After all, it's been a long time since they aired any showbiz stuff about the Azkals. Perhaps they learned their lesson.

Has anyone noticed Dyan Castillejos gushes when she interviews an Azkal? Like a little girl with a crush. I like it though she brings emotion to the interview(if a bit overboard) plus I think I've got a crush on her, hehe. Ronnie Nathanielz, this guy needs to do more research, read a post I had on the "commentators" thread, he actually talked about Stephan Shrock when he wasn't even in the game and his fellow commentators were trying to do damage control. Listen carefully when he talks about football he sometimes tries to BS his way into an interview or football discussion. Like he did when he interviewed Ninoy Aquino back in the day(yes I'm that old). He embarrassed himself bad after that. I've recorded the CFIM game and postgame report, he and Dyan were interviewing someone(don't remember who) and he actually said "never mind, never mind!" cutting off Dyan, but she went through it anyway, What a maroon, how professional is that! I urge you guys to listen, really listen when he ask football questions you'd be surprised. Having said all that, he has improved, a little. In my opinion, make Darren the face of football in the media, it would be the best they could do I think, explayer and wonderfull speaker. He'll have a far looonger career in broadcast media than football I think, plus English accent or Sri Lankan, you choose?

Azkals, PFF sign 4-year deal with ABS-CBNThu. Feb. 09, 2012 MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and ABS-CBN Sports has just renewed a long term relationship that aims to benefit the promotion of the sport in the country. Since ABS-CBN Sports aired the first nationally televised matches of the Azkals in the 2010 Suzuki Cup, the relationship has gone along way. This time around both have agreed to a long-term four-year deal that will not only air the Azkals' matches but also will give equal exposure to the women's national team and the other youth men's teams as well.Azkals team manager Dan Palami and PFF president Nonong Araneta expressed happiness with ABS-CBN not just with the national exposure that they got so far but also internationally as he said even some international players like the Fil-foreigners have expressed willingness to join the national team because they saw the matches on The Filipino Channel. Meanwhile, ABS-CBN Sports is very happy about joining forces with the PFF to give the exposure that the sport of football deserves. Peter Musngi of ABS-CBN Sports noted that even before the Azkals' resurgence in 2010 they have already invested in the sport such as the World Cup in 2010 and the UEFA Champions League matches. All local matches of the Azkals will still be carried exclusively by ABS-CBN Sports for the next four years, while all the international matches will be exclusively aired by ABS-CBN Sports starting 2013.www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/02/09/12/azkals-pff-sign-4-year-deal-abs-cbn
So, that's why AKTV took the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup coverage rights. This is what I fear of; not many people would be able to watch this most-anticipated tournament of the year IMHO. On the plus side, I hope we would be able to watch the international matches of the women's team and the youth teams in the coming months. That'll be great!

I mean P75M/year worth of "air time"? That means ABS generates P75M/year on commercial revenues and then PFF gets ONLY P1.2M per game (maybe 8 games/year?). Nothing equitable there, people. The PFF should've held out for more, or should've gone for a shorter time length TV deal, maybe 3 or 2 years instead. And the P30K to the provincial football associations? That's chump change. There's an ABS executive who's being highly congratulated on getting this deal done, for getting such as good deal, at the expense of the PFF, the Azkals players, and most of all the fans. Yes, they're celebrating. Meanwhile the PFF have to manage with growing expenses. Yes, revenues too, but we can't forget those expenses. The fans and PFF deserve better than this.

xyz, I was wondering about this too. I think its because there were only two bidders so they had to take the best offer they could. I feel for the PFF. You are right their operating expenses will be larger as the sports grow. I'm thinking the money we receive from FIFA, DFB, this TV deal and other FA's that are donating to us are sufficient for now.
I also think with ABS' presence world wide, they are making a killing on advertisement revenue. The P1.2mil PFF gets per game is absolutely "chump change". The only thing we can do is get this sport more and more popular and hopefully when the next TV deal approaches, we get a better share.

It might be because the other football teams like the women's and youth teams and televised provincial events are not proven revenue earners but will be covered anyways resulting in free air time for the PFF, that otherwise might not attract sufficient ad revenue to otherwise compensate ABS. When this contract runs out and they can show that they can attract sponsor interest for this other events as well, they can ask for more. At this point in time we are still trying to grow interest in the sport and this extensive coverage will be needed.
It is similar to arrangements here in the US when soccer at one time was not so popular and they even had to partially pay ESPN/ABC to help cover the expenses of televising their events. Eventually the World Cup, and the US national team demonstrated they can attract very high ratings and were able to sign lucrative contracts with broadcasting companies here in the US. The US now is the single highest revenue maker for FIFA for the rights to the World Cup on a country by country basis.
