David Beckham extends LA Galaxy stay with two-year dealDavid Beckham is to remain at LA Galaxy after signing a new two-year deal with the club. The former England captain, 36, had been linked with a move to Paris St Germain but decided to stay at the team he joined in 2007 from Real Madrid. "This was an important decision for me," Beckham said in a statement. "I had many offers from clubs from around the world, however, I'm still passionate about playing in America and winning trophies with the Galaxy.'' Beckham, who began his career at Manchester United, helped Galaxy lift the MLS Cup last season, meaning he has won a major trophy with each of the clubs he has permanently signed for. His Galaxy contract expired on 31 December but with his family settled in California it now looks like he will finish his career in the United States. He has stated previously he would like to be involved in the running of an American club when his playing efforts come to an end, and he still harbours hopes of competing for the Great Britain team in the London Olympics. "I've seen first hand how popular soccer is now in the States and I'm as committed as ever to growing the game here,'' Beckham said. "My family and I are incredibly happy and settled in America and we look forward to spending many more years here.'' Following his graduation through the Manchester United youth ranks, he moved to Real Madrid in 2003 for £25m before moving to the United States in a five-year deal worth £128m. The move drew criticism at the time but it is accepted that he has helped boost football in the US. LA Galaxy know how close they came to losing the player who gives the team international fame, and head coach Bruce Arena was delighted that Beckham extended his stay. "I am thrilled that David has chosen to rejoin the Galaxy, especially as he had numerous options where he could continue his career,'' Arena said. "I felt that he was one of the best players in all of MLS last season and we could not have achieved the success that we did without him. We look forward to trying to replicate that success this season with David once again in a Galaxy uniform.'' Beckham's deal was negotiated by head of XIX Entertainment Simon Fuller, who is the player's business partner and manager, and also looks after world number four tennis player Andy Murray and Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton. "When David and I discussed making the move from Real Madrid to the LA Galaxy back in 2007, our minds were firmly focused on the massive opportunity of helping to grow soccer in the United States,'' Fuller said. "We have made great progress over the past five years in raising the profile of soccer domestically and the MLS on a worldwide stage, and we are encouraged by all the results. "However, clearly this is an ongoing mission and this new deal confirms our commitment to continuing our journey and making sure the world's biggest sport, soccer, continues to grow in the world's most passionate sports loving nation, the USA.'' news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/16394706.stm

Boyens eager to ease center back crisis for GalaxyCARSON, Calif. – The start of the preseason for the LA Galaxy has left them with one inescapable fact: They need help at center back. And although that may have seemed unthinkable to the MLS Cup champs last year, the offseason knee injury to Omar Gonzalez means someone will have to step into some very big shoes for the club this season. Veteran center back Andrew Boyens, for one, is ready for the job. “As soon as I signed here, I saw it as an opportunity,” said Boyens, who was picked up in the Re-Entry Draft after appearing in 12 games for Chivas USA last season. “These guys have a great center back pairing in Omar and A.J. [DeLaGarza] and, regardless of what happened to Omar, I was hoping to be pushing for starting minutes. WATCH: Galaxy coaches, players on training “And regardless of what happens to anyone on the team that doesn’t change for me. I see it as a really good opportunity.” Aside from Boyens, the Galaxy drafted Tommy Meyer and Bryan Gaul in the SuperDraft and Supplemental Draft, respectively, and have extended Leonardo’s loan from São Paulo FC. DeLaGarza has spent January with the US national team and will meet up with the Galaxy with camp already underway. While the coaches try and sort through the central defense and roster in general, the 28-year-old Boyens said he has work to do. “I’d like to think that I worked hard enough in the offseason to be able to get straight back into it, but you always have to push yourself there,” he said. “Once that happens you start meeting the guys on the team, getting used to the coaching staff and the system the team plays, and hopefully start establishing yourself as someone who can play early on.” Boyens was part of New Zealand’s World Cup squad in 2010 but did not play in any of the Kiwis’ three matches. He’s also spent time with Toronto FC and New York, having played a career-high 23 games in 2007 with Toronto FC. “I understand about the history of this team, what they did last year, and there’s an expectation to repeat that or to do as well as they did last year,” he said. “That’s great. That kind of pressure on the team sometimes can be hard, but the guys on this team relish that pressure. Going into the preseason, bring it on.” www.lagalaxy.com/news/2012/01/boyens-eager-ease-center-back-crisis-galaxy

David Beckham a long way off retirement
LA Galaxy’s English midfielder David Beckham has revealed how he is still a long way off of retiring from the sport. David claims that he is still absolutely loving the game and that he has been able to adapt his game with age. David also admitted that he would love to be involved in the Great Britain football team for the London 2012 Olympics and has previously put his name forward to captain the team. Beckham explained, “I know what my limits are, what I can achieve and which passes I can play. So that's been my game over the last few years. I have adapted to my age, different situations and the position that I'm playing in. I still love playing; I still love being part of a team. Right now I'm not even thinking about retiring.” He added, “I'd like to play for a GB football team because it's something that hasn't happened for many, many years. Hopefully I'll be fit, hopefully I'll be in form and hopefully I'll be playing." David Beckham recently signed a new two year contract with MLS side LA Galaxy, which will keep him at the club until the age of 38. www.fansshare.com/news/david-beckham-a-long-way-off-retirement/

LA Galaxy Sign Forward Edson BuddleFormer Galaxy Star Returns to the Club on Free Transfer Following Year in Germany CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, February 1, 2012) – The LA Galaxy announced today that the club has signed forward Edson Buddle on a free transfer. One of the top goal scorers in Galaxy and MLS history, Buddle spent the past year playing with FC Ingolstadt of the German 2. Bundesliga after leaving the Galaxy in January 2011. A member of the U.S. National Team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Buddle scored 42 goals in 87 regular season games during his first stint with the Galaxy from 2007-2010, finishing third in MLS in scoring in 2008 and second in the League in 2010 when he finished the season with a career-high 17 goals. Per club and league policy, terms of the contract, which will be finalized when the club receives his International Transfer Certificate, were not disclosed. “I am thrilled to be able to return to MLS and a club that has meant so much to me in my career,” Buddle said. “When I left for Germany last winter, I said that I hoped to be able to one day return to the Galaxy and help lead the club to an MLS Cup championship. That day is today and I look forward to the challenges that now lie ahead.” A fan favorite during his time with the Galaxy, Buddle was the club’s top scorer or second leading scorer every year from 2007-2010, averaging nearly a goal every two games after being acquired in a trade with Toronto FC in exchange for Tyrone Marshall in June 2007. After scoring five goals in his first season with the club, Buddle played a starring role in 2008, scoring a then-career-high with 15 goals to earn his first berth in the MLS All-Star Game. His 15 goals were the third most in MLS that season, with 10 of them coming in a seven game span between May 18 and June 29 during which he recorded a pair of hat tricks. However, injuries limited him to just 19 regular season games and 13 starts the following season, though he still managed to finish second on the team with five goals while helping the club reach MLS Cup for the first time since 2005. Buddle's 2010 Highlights He had his best season as a professional in 2010, scoring 17 goals and helping the Galaxy win their first Supporters’ Shield since 2002. The New York-native scored nine of the Galaxy’s first 10 goals of the season, recording four multi-goal games in the first six weeks of the season, and led the league in scoring all season long until being surpassed on the final weekend of the year. He continued his fine form into the postseason, scoring in both legs of the Galaxy’s Western Conference Semifinal Series win over the Seattle Sounders FC. The club was 13-1-1 in the regular season and playoffs when he scored a goal, compared to just 7-7-4 when he did not. "We’re really excited to have Edson re-joining the LA Galaxy,” General Manager and Head Coach Bruce Arena said. “He has been an outstanding player for us in the past and we look forward to him continuing that success for many years to come." Buddle, who has three goals in 10 caps with the U.S. National Team, including a pair of appearances at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, began his MLS career in 2001 with the Columbus Crew, tallying 42 goals in five years with the club while helping them win the 2002 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, as well as the 2004 Supporters’ Shield. In 2006, he joined the New York Red Bulls, tallying six goals in 28 regular season games, playing the second half of the season under Bruce Arena. A year later he joined expansion Toronto FC and played in 10 games for the club before being traded to the Galaxy. The only player in MLS history to score 40 or more goals for two different clubs, Buddle has scored 90 goals in 231 regular season games during the first 10 years of his MLS career, making him the eighth leading scorer in League history. Buddle made the move to Europe in January 2011, signing an 18-month contract with FC Ingolstadt. The 30-year-old scored on his debut for the club later that month and went on to score three goals and record an assist in 14 games with the club, helping them to avoid relegation. This season, Buddle was one of the top scorers for Ingolstadt, tallying seven goals for the club in the league, including the first multi-goal games of his German career, scoring twice in a 4-2 home win over Dynamo Dresden on September 16 and doing so two weeks later in a 5-3 home defeat to VfL Bochum. Buddle and the rest of the LA Galaxy will play their first official game of 2012 on Wednesday, March 7 when they face Toronto FC in the first leg of their 2011/12 CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinal, which will be played at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They will open the 2012 MLS season three days later on Saturday, March 10 when they host Real Salt Lake at The Home Depot Center in MLS First Kick 2012, presented by ’s Sporting Goods. That game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. (PT) and tickets are on sale now as part of season ticket packages as well as three and six-game plans. Bringing Juninho back integral for LA's title aspirationsJuninho's return gives Galaxy plenty of options in central midfield February 8, 2012 Luis Bueno LAGalaxy.com CARSON, Calif. – When Marcelo Sarvas joined the Galaxy, one of the first things he said was that he was not going to try and replace Juninho. Turns out, he was correct in a way few could have guessed. Juninho will return to the Galaxy on loan for a third season, the club announced on Tuesday. The 23-year-old Brazilian had gone back to São Paulo FC after signing a new contract with the club that had loaned him to the Galaxy over the past two seasons, but he will re-join the MLS Cup champions for the 2012 campaign after all. “We’ve been in discussions to try and bring him back and we were successful in doing that,” Arena told reporters on Tuesday. READ: Juninho and Leonardo to return to the LA Galaxy in 2012 WATCH: Best of Juninho So it turns out Sarvas will play with Juninho after all, and the two may even battle it out for playing time in the heart of the LA Galaxy midfield. The Galaxy now have seemingly an embarrassment of riches in central midfield. David Beckham spent most of his time a year ago in the central midfield and now has Juninho and Sarvas there. Michael Stephens has spent time with the US Under-23 national team in the offseason while Arena has been high on Dan Keat since he drafted him in the 2011 Supplemental Draft. The club also added 2012 draft picks Kenney Walker and Rafael Garcia to the mix. Arena insisted there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to get their share of minutes. “With the CONCACAF Champions League and Sarvas cup-tied, it’s important to have Juninho here,” Arena said. “Beckham and possibly Stephens could be gone to the Olympics, we need that position to be a position with depth and quality and I think we have that now.” Continuity is important for the Galaxy, and bringing Juninho back is significant in that regard. “We want to keep as many of the players together from last year, and getting Juni back is a big thing for us,” Beckham told reporters. With Juninho playing defensive midfield so well, Beckham was free to roam and create chances with crosses and through-balls. Having the Brazilian in the mix once more will be noteworthy in more ways than that, though. “Not just for me, but obviously for the team,” Beckham said. “[Juninho] scored important goals at vital times throughout the season. His overall performance ... he’s grown into a mature player over the last couple of years." In two seasons in LA, Juninho has blossomed into one of the top defensive midfielders in all the league. Having signed a three-year deal with São Paulo, Juninho was likely hoping to compete for playing time. That he was unable to get minutes with the South American giants is not a knock on Juninho. “They have a very deep team and a very good team," Arena said. "It’s probably the best team in Brazil right now. It probably wasn’t likely he was going to see a whole lot of time.” Also coming back is Leonardo. Unlike Juninho, the big center back joins the Galaxy for good, having arrived on a free transfer. Leonardo tore knee ligaments after starting each of the first seven games of 2011, and when he will return is yet unknown. “Once we see him again – he left in early December – we’ll see how he’s improved in his ... rehabilitation on his knee,” Arena said. “If he’s making the kind of progress we think he has made, we should be able to get him back in April.” www.lagalaxy.com/news/2012/02/bringing-juninho-back-integral-las-title-aspirations

The Gang is BACK.
After a dominating season which saw the Los Angeles Galaxy become MLS Champions and cement their status as possibly the greatest MLS team of all-time, several questions still remained about their future. Would David Beckham make a move overseas? Would Juninho go back to Brazil? Would the team still have the passion and desire to contend for another title?
The Galaxy’s off-season got off to a rough start though. Juninho went back to Sao Paulo FC, the French press prematurely announced their Beckham signing, and Omar Gonzalez tore his ACL, effectively ruling him out of the 2012 regular season. While this didn’t necessarily doom the Galaxy’s quest for a 2-peat, it certainly made the task much more difficult. And yet, just as quickly as their woes piled up, the tide also turned within a matter of weeks.
Beckham officially announced his desire to stay in LA. The Galaxy lured back Edson Buddle, their top striker from just 2 seasons ago. And to cap off the treble, Sao Paulo decided to loan Juninho back to the Galaxy for one more season. Just like that, the uncertainty that clouded their upcoming season, was lifted.
And just like that, the Galaxy became huge favorites to repeat their championship season. Already being called an MLS “dream team”, the squad boasts a midfield of Landon Donovan, Beckham, and Juninho. Buddle and Robbie Keane look to provide a dangerous offense up top, and the defense returns starters DeLaGarza, Franklin, and Dunivant.
The future suddenly looks extremely bright for the Galaxy, whose offensive power should not only provide exciting matches, but possibly even a counterbalance for an uncertain central defense. Get ready Galaxy fans. If you thought last season was incredible, this season should be that and more. Assuming the Galaxy lives up to its potential, of course.

Port Vale hopeful of re-signing Chris BirchallPort Vale have confirmed they are in talks to re-sign Chris Birchall, although they say reports that a deal is already done are "premature". The midfielder, 27, left LA Galaxy earlier this month after turning down an offer of a new contract . "Hopefully we can get something completed but we aren't there yet," said Vale boss Micky Adams. Birchall played 91 times for Vale before leaving for Coventry, then managed by Adams, in August 2006 . Reports on Friday morning claimed that Birchall, who helped LA Galaxy to the MLS title last season, had signed a deal at Vale Park until the end of the season. However, Adams told the club website: "I was surprised to read he had signed because international clearance had not arrived and we are still to sort out some other issues. "I also smiled to myself when I saw he was playing for free, because you don't get anything for free in football." Birchall began his career with Vale and played for Trinidad and Tobago at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. His performances earned him a move to Coventry, where he spent two-and-a-half years, before being re-united with Adams at Brighton in January 2009. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17075525

The LA Galaxy will open the 2012 regular season the same way they closed the 2011 season: with a trophy in their cabinet. After a scoreless 90 minutes, Brian Perk came up big in a penalty shootout, stopping two spot kicks as the Galaxy defeated the New England Revolution on Saturday night at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium to win the Desert Diamond Cup final. The LA Galaxy starts their 2012 MLS season with a home game against Real Salt Lake at the Home Depot Center on March 10, 2012. Kickoff at 07:30 PM PT (March 11, 2012 07:30 AM PHT)

Donovan, Galaxy eager for chance to add more silverwareMarch 5, 2012 Luis Bueno MLSsoccer.com TORONTO – Playing for the LA Galaxy has typically meant playing for trophies. Certainly over the last three years, that has been the case, as the Galaxy have reached two MLS Cup finals, collected two Supporters’ Shields and now find themselves in the knockout rounds of the CONCACAF Champions League. But while the defending MLS Cup champs' fate is intertwined with the possibility of silverware, players are not taking the chance to win trophies as a given. “As we saw with Salt Lake last year, you don't get too many opportunities to do something like this,” Galaxy captain Landon Donovan told reporters on Sunday. The Galaxy will compete against fellow MLS side Toronto FC for a spot in the region's final four, with the first leg of the home-and-away series slated for Toronto's Rogers Centre on Wednesday (8 pm ET, Fox Soccer). A year ago, Real Salt Lake made a stunning run to the finals only to lose the decisive match to Monterrey at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Galaxy, meanwhile, hope to have a similar showing – at least through the first two rounds. Standing in the way are a Toronto side that struggled initially under new coach Aron Winter in 2011, but finished the year off strong, with their second-place finish in Champions League's Group D a testament to that. The Galaxy, though, have set their sights on starting off the year on the right foot, regardless of who is on the other side. “The Champions League is important and we want to give ourselves a real chance," Donovan said. "It doesn't mean it's going to happen, but we really want to go for it." The Galaxy are, of course, one of two MLS teams to win a CONCACAF trophy. But their title came back in 2000, when the tournament was held over the course of two weeks with all games played in Southern California. A run in this edition of the Champions League would be much more challenging given the travel and clubs involved, but Donovan said players are poised for success. “We think we have a team that's capable of doing something special,” Donovan said. “You don't want to take that lightly.” If there are any questions for Donovan, it's his own health situation. Bronchitis kept him out of the final match of his loan stint with Everton, then forced him to miss the United States' match against Italy. He didn’t train much at all until Sunday. Missing two weeks after having had a strong showing for Everton in January and early February was frustrating, but Donovan now is focused on getting as close to tip-top shape as possible. “The frustrating part was that I was fit and healthy as I’ve felt in a long time,” Donovan said. “You don't train for two weeks and you’re ill – it kind of takes it out of you. This week has been about kind trying to get fitness back and getting myself sharp again. Everything's happening the way it's supposed to and maybe that two week break was good in the long run.” www.mlssoccer.com/ccl/news/article/2012/03/05/donovan-galaxy-eager-chance-add-more-silverware

A Toronto fan threw a beer can at David Beckham, who still got the last laugh
Up 2-1 late in the first leg of Toronto FC's CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against the LA Galaxy, you wouldn't think Toronto fans had any reason to throw things at David Beckham as he prepared to take a corner kick, but they did anyway. Showering him in streamers, it started out harmless (yet still annoying) enough, but then a beer can came tumbling out of the stands and landed in front of the ball. Beckham picked up the can to show the officials and express his displeasure before tossing it aside. Eventually, he took the corner kick, which led to a Landon Donovan goal to give LA the advantage on away goals heading into the second leg. David Beckham will not be deterred by your beer, Canada. sports.yahoo.com/blogs/soccer-dirty-tackle/toronto-fan-threw-beer-david-beckham-still-got-044333645.html

Recap: Galaxy fall to Real Salt Lake 3-1 in home openerLA forward Edson Buddle scores first goal of the year in home opener loss to Salt Lake March 10, 2012 Luis Bueno CARSON, Calif. -- You don't see that very often. The defending champions LA Galaxy took a lead early in the second half through Edson Buddle before conceding three unanswered goals to Real Salt Lake in the final 17 minutes to fall 3-1, spoiling LA's home opener at The Home Depot Center on Saturday. Fabian Espindola and Javier Morales did the majority of the damage after a Galaxy own goal leveled terms in the 73rd minute. Buddle accounted for the lone Galaxy goal, heading in a David Beckham cross in the 71st minute. The loss was the first of any kind suffered by the Galaxy at The Home Depot Center since Nov. 14, 2010, when they lost to FC Dallas in the Western Conference Championship. The victory was the first for RSL against the Galaxy in Southern California since June 2009. The Galaxy, who were coming off Wednesday’s CONCACAF Champions League match in Toronto, started a mostly first-choice roster. The only changes were Marcelo Sarvas in for Juninho and debutant Tommy Meyer in place of Andrew Boyens. Real Salt Lake's lineup featured neither Javier Morales (quadriceps) nor Alvaro Saborio (knee), although the two stars were on the bench, and their insertion in the second half would turn the tide. Luis Gil and first-round draft choice Sebastian Velasquez got the call, as well as striker Paulo Junior. The Galaxy dominated the first half. A furious stretch of sustained pressure resulted in several chances. Landon Donovan rattled the crossbar from 20 yards out in the 27th minute, and moments later Mike Magee forced Nick Rimando to make a diving save after executing a perfect bicycle kick off a pinpoint Beckham cross. RSL brought on their big guns in the 66th minute, as Saborio and Morales replaced Paulo Junior and teenager Gil, respectively. The Galaxy countered shortly thereafter with Juninho and Michael Stephens. Almost immediately, the match changed. Buddle made his return a triumphant one when he scored in the 71st minute. Beckham swung a cross in from the right flank and Buddle coolly headed the ball into the corner of the net. Buddle, who rejoined the Galaxy after a stint in Europe, led the Galaxy with 17 goals in 2010 and accounted for the first seven goals of that year, a run that included a brace against RSL. LA's lead was short-lived though as the Galaxy gifted the equalizer to the visitors. Velasquez knocked a speculative cross in from the right flank. The ball took a bounced inside the box just as Sean Franklin tried to clear it. The ball skipped off his shin, though, and into the back of the net. Morales punched in the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute -- his first goal since returning from a horrific leg injury early in 2011. Morales was at the right place at the right time as a deflected ball fell to him inside the penalty area. Morales knocked the ball on frame. Saunders got a piece of it but was unable to stop it. Espindola put an exclamation mark on the victory when he buried a goal in the 84th minute on a breakaway, moments after the Galaxy took out center back Meyer in favor of Chad Barrett. www.lagalaxy.com/news/2012/03/recap-galaxy-fall-real-salt-lake-3-1-home-opener
