Good he can take Ian Araneta's place. But wait, Ian has a strong "connection" inside PFF...

Its not just Ruben Doctora that our esteemed "youth-coach-coaching-a-senior-team" has missed the boat on. Jake Morallo, Barbaso and Fernandez comes to mind. The senior team coach at this time always complains about the his players unable to come to the Philippines etc etc. So why not look inward, why not scout the islands. The country is 90 million plus even if our kids play basketball there must be some that play soccer and if not polished at least show potential. He never looked! Did he ever really scout at soccer hotspot in the country? Maybe pass by and say hello but not like this new REAL coach of the U teams. Instead he has the likes of Matt H. who he awards the Captaincy and subsequently abandons the team at mid tournament. Why he didn't give it to de Jong in the first place I cannot understand. He plays Gener instead of younger players who needs to be exposed to international opponents(no offense to Gener I think he plays well but at 37 cannot last much longer).
Ruben Doctora would have never gotten a fair shake if U17 guy was still coaching.
Moving on: there's a report that Coach Z is very high on Valmayor. Expect to see more of this kid in HBT.

Another bunch of reactionary comments of hype based on limited performances. Oh please. I just saw the highlights of the game versus Air Force, and if anything, it's the dismal defense that allowed him to score. The goalkeeper is a joke. The CBs are slow.
Before you accuse the Coach of playing favorites or that Doctora should've been included, or that not enough scouting is going on, remove those rose colored glasses and look at the performances critically. And most important, two games does not a national player make. He may be good, but I will wait until he plays more games.

Another bunch of reactionary comments... I just saw the highlights... You accuse some with being reactionary, yet you've only seen highlights?? Our rose color glasses include seeing the whole game, how about you? Coach playing favorites? Have you seen Ians play for the last 12 months, and not just the highlights, and why is he starting and playing the amount of minutes he has been? While capable players like Nate Burkey sit? Before you accuse the Coach... ...Doctora should've been included... You are right its too early to tell, but the "coach" has wasted local talents like Morallo and Barbaso who continue to shine in the UFL. We who watch the local league see this. I'll say this again: The former U17 coach played a FORWARD as a left back in the SEAG while locally based defenders sat(Barbaso, Basa and Fernandez among them). Kids who continuously show if not excellence, high level play day in and day out in the UFL or the college level. ...not enough scouting is going on We did NOT make this up. Everyone "in the know" from Bob Guerrerro(you'd know him if you ever watched NT games), Sports writers Mike Limpag, Ryan Fenix from the Filipina assistant of Coach Z, local fans in the games who's seen him, etc etc has said how Coach Z sat through about 10(TEN) games of the UFL already to scout players, how he is planning to tour the provinces to scout local youth players. How he's already watched the UAAP juniors game. The "other coach" well... There was a recent report how a current NT assistant coach went to Bacolod at a football festival, sat through 1(ONE) game and left. How, as fans, can we remain impressed, silent or passive when we hear/see/read about these things? I just saw the highlights of the game versus Air Force... the dismal defense that allowed him to score. The goalkeeper is a joke. The CBs are slow. First lets stay in the level of the UFL/of Philippine football: Yes the CB's are slow, but that Air Force GK is seen by many as the best local GK we have despite the extra layers of fat in the midsection. That dismal defense also belong to the previous winner and current champion of the UFL Cup. Give credit to the winner against AF or at least see a whole match first.

airforce GK nagretired yan 2004 or 2005 he is finest goalkeeper natin. even asean neighbors natin they respect mercado at kilala cya. naka best goal keeper natin yan before sa tiger cup pa dati kahit hindi tayo nag champion. rigth time and a rigth place parati si mercado na hindi mo makikita sa mga bagong goalkeeper sa UFL. ang galing nya kumuha ng angle hindi lahat ganun may katangian. hindi ibig sabihin na nakagoal ang kalaban big joke na. until now best goalkeeper natin si mercado even the respected football analyst football fanatic before pa naging sikat ang azkals the respect mercado. ako i respect mercado and i appreciate him so much
