Chelsea Soccer School Philippines officially launched By Alder Almo (philstar.com) Updated May 15, 2012 05:27 PM Comments (0) SHARE: facebook yahoo! buzz MANILA, Philippines – Spearheaded by former Chelsea Academy students and now Philippine Football poster boys Phil and James Younghusband, Asia's third Chelsea Soccer School was officially launched at the SM Mall of Asia today. After Hong Kong and Malaysia, the English club chose the Philippines for its expansion program after the meteoric rise of the Philippine Azkals and their affinity to the Younghusband brothers. The official launch capped off the summer camp powered by the Younghusband Football Academy in which close to 100 kids enrolled. "The challenge now is to sustain the interest in football. That's why we're putting up grassroots program. It's about creating more opportunities for kids to play football," Phil said. Top officials from Chelsea graced the launch where the grand plan is to put up a blue pitch, the trademark of all the English club's soccer schools. "You don't need a lot of equipment to play football. It's the passion that we see in Phil and James to reach their aspirations and to teach young kids to play football that made this partnership perfect," said Chelsea's International Development Officer Ian Woodroffe. The Younghusband brothers spent their early years in Chelsea Football Academy in England under former managers Ginaluca Vialli and Jose Mourinho. Phil was even included in Chelsea's pre-season squad in 2005 after becoming their youth team's scorer. Their stint there played a large role in developing their game, eventually helping put the Azkals on Asia's football map. "Football has changed a lot in the country. It's an exciting time. There will be facilities to be built. UFL will have a new home in McKinley Hill. Chelsea will put up a blue pitch. We're trying to make people enjoy football a lot better," said James, who also plays for the Loyola Meralco Sparks in the UFL alongside his brother. Chelsea and the Younghusband brothers though are still looking for a permanent location to put up the blue pitch and tour the countryside. With the long-term partnership already sealed, the Younghusband brothers are also looking forward to see Filipino kids play against the other Chelsea Soccer Schools in Asia in an inter-school competition in the future. Adrian New, the English club's Managing Director for Asia, is inclined to bring the club that boasts of Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres, John Terry and Frank Lampard among others to play a friendly against the Azkals here. "At some point in the future, of course, we'll bring the club here. Last year, we played in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. In 2013, we'll be coming back again in Asia and we'll explore the opportunity to play here," New said. www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=807286&publicationSubCategoryId=200

Chelsea excited to help develop PH footballBy Camille B. Naredo, ABS-CBNnews.com Posted at 05/16/2012 10:23 AM | Updated as of 05/16/2012 4:32 PM MANILA, Philippines – English football club Chelsea is aiming to play a big role in the continued growth and development of football in the Philippines as they formally opened the Chelsea FC Soccer School yesterday at the Mall of Asia Music Hall. Chelsea partnered with Philippine Azkals mainstays Phil and James Younghusband to set up the soccer school, which opened to children of all ages and skill levels last April. Since April 17, the children have been training at the EVIA football field in Las Pinas under the supervision of The Younghusband Football Academy (TYFA). “You can see we’re committed in that we have a strong connection already with Phil and James,” said Ian Woodroffe, Chelsea FC’s International Development Manager. “We really interact with a wide community. It’s really about being inclusive, it’s about giving opportunities to young people, and we’re really enthused by the passion that we saw,” Woodroffe added. Adrian New, Chelsea FC’s Managing Director for the Asia Pacific region, said one of their ultimate goals is “to show every child in the Philippines the power of football.” “It isn’t necessary that we wish to find players as good as James or Phil. We just want every child to experience football as something that brings you together with your friends, that allows you to stay fit,” New said. Phil and James Younghusband graduated from the Chelsea Football Academy in England and suited up for the side’s youth team. Long-term planDuring yesterday’s press conference, dozens of children participated in the circuit set up by the Younghusband brothers, which challenged the young players to test their different football skills. The children, who were part of the first batch of participants in the soccer school, were given the chance to show off what they have learned during the summer in front of the Younghusbands and the Chelsea officials. According to the Younghusbands as well as Chelsea executives, this year’s summer football camp is only the beginning of a long-term partnership which is geared towards helping young players develop their skills. “This is a milestone for Philippine football,” Phil said. “It’s a long term plan for football, and we’ve always said it won’t happen overnight. Having the partnership with Chelsea is a great thing for Philippine football, and we’re very happy.” Woodroffe said that Chelsea is looking forward to developing new projects and new football programs in the country, as well as creating a permanent facility for the soccer school. “Our strategy is that there as to be a permanent location for our school. The first one we created is in Hong Kong, the second one is in Kuala Lumpur, and the Philippines is the third... This is the first step, and hopefully we’ll be back here to announce exactly where the location will be,” New added. Chelsea will not only be training football players; they also plan to train PE teachers and coaches to help them teach children about the game. “We coach the coaches to make sure they understand the safety elements, the nutrition elements, the medical,” New said. “It’s more than just ‘kick a ball.’” Giving, creating opportunitiesThe Younghusband brothers said the most important aspect of the Chelsea Soccer School is that it will give and create football opportunities for children as well as sustain the interest in Philippine football. “Football has changed a lot, there’s been a lot more interest,” James noted. “There’s now a future in the sport.” “We really want kids to ahve what we have, and that’s to play football for a living,” he added. “Now that the awareness is there, the challenge is sustaining football,” Phil said. “That’s where we have the grassroots program and the local league. Success with the national team is always great, and it will be great if a future national team player will come from the Chelsea Soccer School.” New, for his part, said spending an hour a week in the football field can turn out to be the “highlight of the week” for the children. “For us, this is us giving back to the children in hopes that they can see football as something to give them fun,” he said. “We give children the proper skills to understand the fun they can have, and then try to allow them to develop.” The creation of the soccer school in the Philippines is part of a greater Chelsea ambition, which involves building a soccer school in every country in Asia, according to New. “We’re working in Jakarta, in Bangkok and in Seoul to open schools there as well in the next few months,” he said. The Chelsea officials were unsure if they can bring members of the team to the Philippines, but they confirmed that coaches will be coming to the country to help run the soccer school. “We’ll definitely have coaches from the UK, from Chelsea, who will work with the young players,” Woodroffe said. www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/05/16/12/chelsea-excited-help-develop-ph-football

Younghusband brothers usher in third Chelsea FC school in AsiaEARL VICTOR L. ROSERO, GMA News May 16, 2012 11:01am 50 20 Email0 ShareThis70 The distinct blue hue of Chelsea FC was everywhere at an event nook in the SM Mall of Asia Tuesday, as the former club of Phil and James Younghusband launched its third Blue Pitch program in Asia. Blue Pitch, the English Premier League club's community-based football training program, made its Asian debut in Hong Kong, back in 2009, and then in Malaysia a year later. For the Younghusbands, it was an easy decision to bring the movement over to the Philippines. Aside from setting up football schools all over Asia, Chelsea is also implementing its "Search for an Asian Soccer Star." The club said the talent search “is the only initiative of its kind undertaken by a professional football club and is designed to give a much needed boost to Asian participation at all levels of the game.” In an interview with GMA News Online, Phil Younghusband said the site for the football school has been chosen, but he declined to identify the location for now. Chelsea FC Asia Pacific managing director Adrian New said the football schools are the club’s way of helping build communities and encouraging more youngsters to love football. Among the Filipino youths taking part in the football summer camp are 20 kids from the Gawad Kalinga in Muntinlupa. The young footballers went through various sets of exercises meant to sharpen their playing skills. Phil also mentioned that he thinks his former club will give a good account of themselves when they play FC Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time), saying that he expects Chelsea to defend well and outplay their Bundesliga opponents. Wednesday, Younghusband and his Loyola Meralco Sparks team head off to the 2012 Singapore Cup, where they will go up against Geylang United on Friday at the Jalan Basar Stadium. - AMD, GMA News www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/258370/sports/football/younghusband-brothers-usher-in-third-chelsea-fc-school-in-asia

Phil, James make old club proudBy Camille B. Naredo, ABS-CBNnews.com Posted at 05/16/2012 2:37 PM | Updated as of 05/16/2012 2:37 PM MANILA, Philippines – Two executives from high-profile English club Chelsea are happy to see how Phil and James Younghusband have helped develop football in the Philippines through their successes in the national team and in the United Football League (UFL). Ian Woodroffe, Chelsea FC’s international development manager, and Adrian New, the club's managing director for Asia Pacific, are in town to launch the Chelsea FC Soccer School in partnership with The Younghusband Football Academy (TYFA). In Monday's formal opening at the Mall of Asia Music Hall, both Woodroffe and New praised the Younghusband brothers for their role in helping the development of football in the Philippines. "You can't measure how proud we are of seeing how two young boys grow into two young men, and they have such a positive attitude," Woodroffe said. "They're great ambassadors for the sport, and they're great ambassadors for Chelsea. We're very excited now that we're working with them more closely over the next few years," he added. The Younghusband brothers honed their football skills at Chelsea’s Football Academy in London, where they remained with the club for 11 years. Both eventually made appearances for Chelsea’s reserve team, with Phil being included in the 2005 pre-season squad under former manager Jose Mourinho. They eventually moved to the Philippines, where they made waves as members of the Philippine Azkals. Both are now playing for the UFL's Loyola Meralco Sparks as well, with James serving as the team captain. Phil is the league's leading goal-scorer. According to New, Chelsea had an easy time launching their soccer school in the Philippines thanks in part to the Younghusbands. "Working with Phil and James has been very easy. We first met them in November, and very quickly, we were able to get to a point where we can make something happen," New said. "Phil and James spent 11 years with Chelsea, so that really sent them on their way. So when we were starting to look at the Philippines as a market for us to develop our school, they were natural partners for us," he aded. "We're very proud to have them for our partners." For the Younghusband brothers, it is a "dream come true" to have their old club creating a soccer school in the country they now call home. "We're very happy and excited, and this is just a dream come true," James said. "I don't look at it like a job, really. Even thought it's a lot of work, it doesn't feel like work." Phil said that both Chelsea and the Philippines were "very close to our hearts." "Obviously, you go to England and football is very strong. The activity, the level of play and the coaching is very high," he said. "In the Philippines, it is still developing and the good thing now is there is room for improvement." "We wouldn't be playing for the Philippine Azkals if it weren’t for Chelsea, so we thank them very much," James added. www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/05/16/12/phil-james-make-old-club-proud

Chelsea FC formally launches soccer school in the PhilippinesArt Requiron, InterAKTV · Wednesday, May 16, 2012 · 11:27 am The Chelsea Soccer School in the Philippines was formally launched last Tuesday, perceived as a big step for the country’s football program. Azkals star Phil Younghusband, who together with his brother James spearheaded the creation of the school in the country, said that the Chelsea Soccer School will develop new programs and facilities to develop more football players in the country. It will be the third football school created by the English side in Asia with Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur as the other sites. “I’m proud and honored to have the Chelsea Soccer School here in the Philippines. It’s a milestone for Philippine football and I’m very proud to have this opportunity,” said Phil during the school’s formal launch at the SM Mall of Asia last Tuesday. No less than Chelsea international development manager Ian Woodroffe and managing director for Asia Adrian New arrived in the country to meet with the Younghusbands and lay the groundwork for the soccer school. For starters, Phil, a former reserve player of Chelsea, said that that they are currently in talks about the venue of the school with the playing field to be called as “Blue Pitch.” “We can’t disclose right now but we are in close talks about the possible site of the school. We assure everyone that it will be accessible to everyone,” he said. With the English side trying to make an imprint in the country’s football consciousness, Woodroffe didn’t downplay the possibility of bringing in Chelsea players and coaches in the Philippines. “We have already brought players in Bangkok and Hong Kong in the past. This year, we will be in the United States and in 2013, we will be back in Asia. Maybe in 2015 after the World Cup, we will certainly look at the opportunity,” said Woodroffe. The launch coincided with the graduation rites of the Younghusband Football Academy Summer Camp held recently. www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/chelsea-fc-formally-launches-soccer-school-in-the-philippines

Chelsea FC has big plans for its Philippine Football academyBy Bob Guerrero | The Passionate Fan – Thu, May 17, 2012 12:42 PM PHT "Football can be played anywhere" says Azkal winger James Younghusband. "When Phil and I were kids we used to play in our room with an old sock. We used the window as the goal. We broke our Mom's china once." Fortunately the Philippine's young footballers will have a better venue to hone their skills, plus world-class coaching as well. The Chelsea Soccer School, affiliated with the storied English Premier League club, is ready to open up a Footballing Hogwarts right here in Metro Manila. Last May 15 the Chelsea Soccer School Philippines bared their plans in the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall. James and his brother Phil were in attendance as were Ian Woodroffe, the International Development Manager of Chelsea FC and Adrian New, Managing Director of Chelsea Asia Pacific. Vitto Lazatin, Sports Manager of TV5, was also on hand. Both James and Phil spent many years in Chelsea's youth academy and played in the Blues' reserve squad. The event also served as the graduation for the 80 children who participated in the Chelsea Soccer School's first summer program and the 140 kids who learned the game this summer at the Younghusband Football Academy program in Alabang. The YFA is now three years old and the plan is to have greater coordination between the two programs. "There will be a permanent location for the Chelsea Soccer School here" said Mr. New. "We have Chelsea Soccer Schools in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Incheon Korea, and Jakarta and we believe that a permanent venue is crucial." When asked about where the venue might be, Phil Younghusband was coy. "I can't disclose yet where it will be, but we are in close discussions." The Chelsea center's artificial pitch won't be regulation-sized since it will be used for youth development. The field will, however, have one unique feature. It will be colored blue. "Hindi kaya masakit sa mata?" I asked Phil. "Hindi, mas masarap tingnan," he answered with a smile. Chelsea certainly aren't wasting their time on this project. Phil intimated that the field might be ready by the end of the year, but perhaps not in time for the next Chelsea Soccer School Philippines program in September. The Chelsea Soccer School will boost the brothers' goal of upping the level of Football in the Philippines. "We want kids to have what we have, to play Football for a living" explained James. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world." But the Chelsea Soccer School Philippines won't just train players here. It will also be a springboard to take their game to the next level by playing other Chelsea School teams from Asia. "Hopefully we'll have a competition between the other Chelsea Schools in the region" said Phil. "Players can only get better if the have the exposure of playing with bigger, stronger more experienced players." The brothers also plan to reach out to the Football communities both in the South and the North of the Philippines. Through the Younghusband Football Academy they also aim to train P.E. teachers to teach the game better and even help improve competition management. It was also revealed that Chelsea might play a match in the Philippines one day. Chelsea has recently played in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Hong Kong. Next year the Blues will likely tour either the United States or Europe during the summer break. Might we expect a Chelsea match in Manila in 2014? "Probably not, since most of our players will be playing in the World Cup" said Mr. New. As part of the event, several football skill games were set up in the Mall of Asia Music Hall. After the press con Phil demonstrated the different games, like a target practice game into an inflatable goal, a drill that involves shooting into barrels on the ground, and an NBA-inspired all-around skills challenge that tests agility, shooting, and heading. The school will be open to everyone, young and old. I ventured to ask Adrian New if even fans of Arsenal and Tottenham, Chelsea's bitterest local London rivals, are welcome. Of course. And this is how we'll turn them into Chelsea fans." ph.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/thepassionatefan/chelsea-fc-big-plans-philippine-football-academy-044245327.html

If the Younghusbands are serious about helping football nationwide then they should get the whole U14 'Little Azkals' team to enroll in their academy as most of them are not rich kids and besides they are the cream of the crop players since last year (U13 Philippine Team). Right now, the U14 team is having a dilemma on where and how these kids could be in one school so they can continue the long term program for U 17 World Cup in qualification in the future. I think the TYFA is the answer to these questions as long as they will sponsor the whole team in one school. Who knows , one of them could be in Chelsea uniform in the future?

Not only will Chelsea FA help Philippine grassroots from the get go, they will also help themselves commercially. Its like getting advertising time for the school because if the "Little Azkals" are in the news, their academy will also receive mention. Someone make this happen!
