FT Philippines 2-1 Bosnia Herzegovina
Quesada Guillou
Nice comeback by the Philippines with 2 late goals leading to a sweep of their 2 friendlies with Bosnia.
2nd straight assist for the newcomer Eggesvik in Europe who came in at the 70+ minute in the super sub role.
Eggesvik's excellent showing adds another option at attacking midfield. This is a nice problem for Coach Staj to have as she is proving that she might actually deserve to start for this team at that position over Annis.

The PFF announced recently getting invites for friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica for the PWNT to be played abroad. Both countries are headed to the WWC as well and are higher rated than the Philippines. Today they also announced that Jamaica and Uzbekistan will be willing to travel to the Philippines to play against the PWNT which they are planning to schedule during the November FIFA window. sports.inquirer.net/471774/filipinas-could-play-home-games-vs-jamaica-uzbekistan-in-novemberJamaica also qualified to the WWC by placing 3rd in the CONCACAF Women's Championships next only to the US and Canada. It might be rated at #51 2 spots higher than the Philippines but should receive a huge bump in the August FIFA rankings after defeating many higher ranked nations in the CONCACAF WC last week. Uzbekistan is currently ranked 8 spots higher than the Philippines at No. 46 and ruled the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Women’s Championship more than a week ago so it would be like a match between the winners of the AFF and CAFA regional Women's Championship. The friendlies at home should allow the PFF to sell some seats and market the PWNT even more to fans at home. I hope they schedule more games though against teams from the other confeds CONMEBOL, UEFA and CAF as well.

It looks like then next friendlies are in the US against Panama and New Zealand in the next FIFA window in late August and early September.
Some new US based players are already getting invited for tryouts and some of their clubs are already posting it before the respective feds can confirm it.

Stajcic said the match against the co-host of the World Cup will be unlike no other, but will be a gauge on how the players will respond to tough competition.
“For us, it’s going to be a massive challenge. They’ve been together a lot more as a national team. Players playing all over the world in New Zealand, Australia, but plenty in Europe and America as well in the NWSL,” said Stajcic during media availability on Monday morning.
“Definitely a lot of pedigree in their team. Their technique and tactical awareness have improved over the years and they are going to be a tough opponent no doubt about that,” said Stajcic.
Stajcic also declared that the New Zealand clash will be the hardest this year.
“Probably the toughest opponent we play this year after the Asian Cup. I think Australia and South Korea are a touch ahead of them, but after that, they are definitely the hardest team we are going to play,” said Stajcic.
The Filipinas have already played two friendlies against local clubs, both of which were favorable results.
“They are doing really well. We have been together for a week. During the time we are not together, they are doing individual programs they need to be doing if they are not in a professional club. Their conditioning is good but it’s been hot here, training has been tough and the two friendly games have been grueling conditions. That’s all training and preparation, it’s important. That will be a good yardstick of where we at when we play a team like New Zealand. ____
Even though the Panama friendly was cancelled at least they got to play 2 friendlies against local clubs one of which was a 5-1 win over a WPSL(2nd tier) club.

Philippines 1-2 New Zealand The Philippine Women’s National Team concluded their US training camp with a 1-2 defeat to 22nd ranked and FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 co-hosts New Zealand in an international friendly last Tuesday, 06 September 2022 (Wednesday morning Manila time) at the Titan Stadium in Fullerton, California. Sarina Bolden gifted the Philippines with a shock lead in first half stoppage time. Midfielder Sara Eggesvik found the forward with an inviting ball to the box, allowing Bolden to fire a volley past the New Zealand goal. However, New Zealand equalized in the 71st minute from the penalty spot after the Philippines conceded a penalty allowing Meikayla Moore to slot home the spot kick past Olivia McDaniel. New Zealand completed the turnaround seven minutes from time as Ali Riley struck home from close range to put the Football Ferns ahead. Not to be undone, the Filipinas pressed on for a late equalizer and agonizingly came close to finding it right before full-time, but substitute Jessika Cowart’s header was denied by the post. Head coach Alen Stajcic thought the match, which was the culmination of the team’s training camp, was a perfect gauge of the team’s capability against higher ranked teams. “It was a good performance against a strong and experienced team,” said Stajcic after the match. “We have to compete, but we have to win. I am happy we competed and showed that we are at this level, but we have to find a way to win.” pff.org.ph/2022/09/07/philippines-1-2-new-zealand/

The Ferns employed a lot of professional fouls in the second half which was very frustrating and disrupted the Filipinas rhythm so I hope the PWNT will need to learn from this experience in the future as they will probably see this type of strategy employed against them again in the future. Even the Fern's coach admitted that was part of their plan for the 2nd half. New Zealand head coach Jitka Klimková is happy her Football Ferns had the “grit” that helped them to find a way to beat the Philippines in their midweek friendly international in Los Angeles. “I’m very happy that our second half had the grit that we were talking in our locker room with the players and with the team to find a way to win this game and we did it, we found a way,” she said. Meanwhile, Philippines coach Alen Stajcic said his side would learn much from the loss. “I think we showed that we can compete in that level if we do everything right, there’s certainly a lot of improvement left in us as well so, best part is we’re working hard and trying to improve every day and trying to get better,” Stajcic said. ” … we had a few niggles and injuries leading into the games so, you know, it was good that a lot of players could complete the game. “I’m happy that we competed and I’m happy that we showed we’re at this level. “But ultimately, we have to find a way to win and I’m not gonna be happy with losing, that’s for sure.” www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2022/09/08/ferns-coach-jitka-klimkova-happy-her-side-found-the-grit-to-win/Nevertheless the match could have gone either way with both squads being equal in possessions and shot on goal in the end so there were still a lot of positives that they can garner from their performance against a team that is 30 spots ahead of them in the rankings.

FT Philippines 1-1 Costa Rica
Lucky draw for the Philippines as they equalized at the very last minute in OT courtesy of Guillou helping them get a positive away result.
Philippine goalkeeper McDaniel is my woman of the match while keeping Costa Rica at bay as the latter had most of the possession and the chances especially in the 1st half.

Apparently acc. to a hint given by the PFF Secretary General the PWNT will be playing a team from South America next in November most likely either Brazil or Chile since he mentioned a Conmebol team from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. My guess is it is Chile since they are participating in the WWC playoffs against teams close to our ranking although playing a strong team like Brazil would be a really good experience for our players and fans. The Philippines will be without many of their US NCAA players next month since November is tournament time for US NCAA colleges and universities. They are also arranging for friendlies in December even though those would be outside the FIFA mandated windows which would allow them to include many US NCAA players for training and tryouts who would have finished their college seasons already and unlike some of the pros would be available to play. Since they are also preparing for the SEA Games in May which again is outside the FIFA window, this will give an opportunity for many NCAA college players to play for the PWNT in the absence of many pros. The PFF also announced during the PSA conference the resumption of the domestic PFF Women's League in November after a 2 year hiatus due to the Covid induced lockdown with plans of a launch of an even bigger league after the FIFA WWC next year now that they have major sponsors willing to fund a semi pro/pro league so that they can invite many of the Filipina players based abroad and other pros to come to the country and join the league. The Philippines sent a local club Kaya FC to a women's club tournament in Singapore a few weeks ago consisting almost entirely of local based players and ended up winning and dominating the tournament defeating clubs from Indonesia 8-0, Thailand 6-0 and a Singapore club that had foreign European reinforcements 3-1 so the Filipina local players are excited to have their own league starting again in November. They also announced that the PWNT plans to participate in 4 major tournaments next year (SEA Games, FIFA WWC, possibly the AFF Women's Championship, and the Asian Games) as well as participate in the Olympic qualifiers along with any pocket tournaments they will be invited in participating and friendlies in preparation for the WWC so it is going to be another busy 2023 for the PWNT after a record number of games in 2022. www.facebook.com/PhilippineSportswritersAssociation/videos/2478960812244004/

The PWNT probably had the most number of games(27 so far) of any country in the world this year since aside from friendlies they participated in 3 major tournaments(Asian Women's Championship, SEA Games and AFF Women's Championship).
But next year promises to be even busier with 5 major possible tournaments(SEA Games, Women's World Cup, AFF Championship, Asian Games, Olympic qualifiers), pocket tournaments and international friendlies. This is because so many tournaments that were postponed in the past due to the COVID pandemic are now being rescheduled or are catching up next year.

PFF Sec. Gen Gastanes said that the next opponent in November will be a CONMEBOL team who participated in the recent Tokyo Olympics(Brazil or Chile).
Since Brazil has scheduled a match against Canada this November that leaves Chile as the only other possible team that the Philippines can play against away this November.
Another long trip for our players as they have to fly from all over the world to South America to play Chile.
I believe Chile will have the distinction of being the first CONMEBOL team that the PWNT will have played against.
