Dr. Binamra Bista, who recently went to Budapest, Hungary to participate in 2nd FIFA Medical Conference, revealed GoalNepal.com that the world football governing body, FIFA has asked all member FAs' to have at least one AED (Automatic External Defibrillator), which is used in cases of life threatening cardiac arrhythmias which lead to cardiac arrest.
AED is an automated external defibrillator which is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.
Young Doctor Bista shared his Budapest experience with GoalNepal.com for all the readers who are concerned about the players' health.
"The visit to 2nd FIFA medical conference was very eventful. The second day conference was mainly concerned on health, need for medical facilities during, after and before competition not only for the players as well as for the referees and coaches. It also focused on need of:
1. AED (automatic external defibrillator)
2. Medical emergencies on field, training grounds
3. Anti doping
4. PCMA (pre comp medical assesments) workshops for contact and non contact injuries and
5. Injury prevention and mangement fifa 11+
FIFA has also strongly advised to have a AED or at least mechanical defib during the match to all member association and stated ABC for the game ..i.e. A- AED, B- blow the whistle & C-commnece the game. It means no game shall be started untill n unless there is AED or mechanical defibrillator in the venue with medical team.
In the context of Nepal, we don't have AED with us as it is expensive but we do have mechanical defibrillator that is also being hired from hospital in high rental.
In major international and national events, ANFA has always been supportive in medical issues and is strongly focused in these issues as well. ANFA has also promised they would get one AED soon.
It shows that ANFA is keen to take care of the players' health. As a doctor, I am happy about it. Oh yes, recent exmple is Pradeep and Chetan Ghimire being sent to Qatar.
Last but not the least, I am hopeful that medical commitiee in Nepal becomes much more stronger with all needed equipments and qualified personalities so that we can provide better medical facilites to the players, referees, coaches and officials".
