Haha, Coach Anto doesn't do goofy things in the cam very often. From what I heard from my friends in UP Diliman told me, he's quite a reserved guy. He is really serious as a PE instructor there at the College of Human Kinetics, and as a coach for the UP Maroons football team. He's very much concerned about discipline and fitness, so he does practice what he preaches. He's stricter and more assertive than you think. But during UFL games, though, he's now well-known by fangirls because he now happens to play with Loyola and the YH bros, more than he does at Diliman FC. He's quite shy about taking pictures and autographs, but nevertheless he's quite approachable. Moving on, I'm glad he had a chance to play again for the NT during the Guam game. Hope he does well while he's still doing great.

Rumours are circulating from my UP mates that Anto will leave Diliman FC and sign a long-term deal with Loyola. Will find out more soon.

UP football coach Anto Gonzales sacrifices Maroons training time to help AzkalsKarl Decena, InterAKTV · Friday, November 23, 2012 · 9:28 pm BANGKOK, Thailand – Of the 26 members of the Philippine national men’s football team who are here for the Azkals’ campaign in the 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup, four were cut from the final lineup. One of them is veteran midfielder Anto Gonzales, who accepted wholeheartedly being left off the team. “Okay lang. Alam ko namang competitive at deserving naman ang lahat ng players na nasa lineup,” Gonzales said after the Azkals’ training session at the Rajamangala Stadium here. But Gonzales isn’t just another player; he also serves as co-coach of the two-time defending UAAP champion University of the Philippines men’s football team. His stint with the Azkals means that he hasn’t been able to spend as much time with the Fighting Maroons as would have been ideal. “I haven’t been coming to training regularly due to my commitments with the national team,” said Gonzales. Although he has a co-coach who fills his void when he is absent, Gonzales admitted that the Fighting Maroons are having a hard time when he is not at the helm. “Nahihirapan pa rin sila na medyo marami yung players at medyo sanay sila na ako yung nag-li-lead,” he said. Gonzales has been perhaps one of the busiest members of the Azkals. Aside from playing for the national team and coaching the Fighting Maroons, Gonzales is also a regular starter for the Loyola Meralco Sparks in the United Football League. Apart from that, he also teaches various Physical Education and Sports Science subjects at the UP College of Human Kinetics. But there are times when he has to sacrifice one of his commitments just to attend to another duty. However, he assures that he gives his all to his missed obligations to make up with his absence. “Yung classes ko, marami akong absences. So I make sure whenever I’m present, I give them everything. Quality session talaga,” Gonzales said. “Kapag andyan ako (with UP football team), quality training din.” Despite not being part of the final Azkals lineup, Gonzales will still be playing a role for the team, helping out the Azkals brain trust in scouting opponents. “Busy pa rin,” he said. www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/up-football-coach-anto-gonzales-sacrifices-maroons-training-time-to-help-azkals
