ONE of the fil-foreigners the Philippine Football Federation is eyeing for the 23rd Southeast Asian Games is 19-year-old Darren Hartman of Southampton England.
Hartmann, who’s mother is from Bataan, was part of the Tiger Cup training pool but didn’t get to play in the biennial meet. Last March, he got to play for the country in the Bolkiah Cup in Brunei, an annual tournament for the U 21 squads of the Southeast Asian Countries.
“It was an honor to represent the Philippines,” Hartmann wrote in an email reply to Sun*Star Cebu.

The second son of Andrew and Josephine, Darren is currently taking A level Math, Biology, Business and Sports at the Totton College. His older brother Mark is at the university while his younger brothers Matthew (15) and Mark (13) are contracted at Portsmouth FC of the English Premier League.
Mark had just been offered a four year contract and Matthew is on a two year apprentice and is the youngest player to play for the reserve team.
“I have always been a very keen sportsman ever since I could walk,” Hartmann said.
Aside form football, Hartmann representedd his county at track and field and cross country but concentrated on football when he turned 15 when he was invited for training at the Southampton FC Academy.
“Between me and my two brothers, we have over 120 trophies from Cup Competitions, League Titles, 6 aside tournaments, European tournaments, player of the season, youth player of the season awards,” Hartmann said.
“I am predominantly right sided but I’m capable of playing left sided, in a 4-4-2, I play an attacking right back, and in the 3-5-2 I play wing back,” he said,
Before his stint for the RP team, Hartmann counts his first season in the Under 10s as his most memorable.
“We got through to a cup final, and it was the first time, that I got to play in front of a big crowd in a small stadium. I had my name in a match program with a little background and I still have it and its nice t look at it and it reminds me of how far I have come,” he said.
Hartmann is also grateful for the support of his love ones.
“My mum and my dad for all the support and for coming to all my matches. Mybrothers for being the best I could wish for. And a very special person in my life, Holly for all the times she has been there to pick me up and keep me going when things have gone wrong I was blessed the day I met her,” he said.
