Azkals back in camp for 2012 Challenge CupBy Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated November 28, 2011 12:00 AM MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Azkals, currently with their respective clubs, will link up and get back on training next month to gear up for the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup on March 3-18, 2012 in Nepal. “We start training for the Challenge Cup on Dec. 8,” said Azkals team manager Dan Palami of the resumption of sessions set five days after Phl XI’s exhibition match with David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy. “We intend to do two training camps – one local and one in the Gulf (region) – and then use the (Fifa) international date on Feb. 29 to play against a team either at home or near Nepal, depending on when our first game will be for the Challenge Cup,” he added. The Azkals reached the Challenge Cup’s main tournament for the first time after placing second in Group B of the qualifiers earlier this year. They will be up against Palestine, 2008 champ India, Turkmenistan, Maldives, 2006 champ Tajikistan, North Korea and host Nepal, whom the Azkals defeated in a friendly (4-0) before they went on a break last month. Palami admitted the Azkals won’t be a complete team for the Challenge Cup as the presence of the Europe-based pros like Stephan Schrock, Paul Mulders, Jerry Cagara and Dennis Lucena depends on the good graces of their respective clubs. “At this point in time, we don’t want to be too optimistic on being able to come up with a complete team. However, I’ve asked the coach to make sure that the core team, this means those who are based here, will be prepared so that when we infused two or three players (there won’t be much adjustment),” he said. The Challenge Cup does not fall under the Fifa international match days, the period in which clubs tend to release players to their national teams. Only defenders Rob Gier and Ray Jonsson, according to Palami, had committed to be with the team for the duration of the meet. As with the rest of Fil-Euros, Palami said the plan is to “borrow” them for two games and shuffle their stints in the two-week tourney. “Right now, what we’re trying to do is talk to the clubs to allow them to at least send their players for two games and from there, once we know whom the clubs have allowed, then we determine what game they’ll play – first two games, next two games, those things. We’ll probably play two at a time, maybe Mulders and Schrock, then Jerry (Lucena) and Cagara,” he said. www.philstar.com/sportsarticle.aspx?articleid=752801&publicationsubcategoryid=69

IIRC, the management were eyeing Kevin Ingreso to suit up for the nationals for this tournament. Is there any progress regarding this? Any info on this is very much appreciated.

Seems like the LA Galaxy friendly will gauge our Azkals for these very tough guys! And we have Malaysia to hopefully play them in Feb 29th. Tough road lies ahead.

Group A Nepal Turkmenistan Maldives Palestine Group A would been a easier for our Azkals... they already won against Nepal and Draw against Palestine... the only tough team in this group I think is Turkmenistan...

Who knows what will happen? It may be the group of Death but really who knows. We got plenty of time to assemble and practice our team before the challenge cup.

GROUP B Updates: North Korea will play vs Tajikistan on Feb 29, 2012. I usually don't see them playing friendlies. It's the last game in 3rd round of FIFA WCQ Asia India is really preparing for this: 1. They have friendlies vs Malaysia which they won in last game and other game is draw. 2. They are the host and having several matches for 2011 SAFF Championshio (counterpart of AFF Suzuki Cup in South Asia) Tajikistan is now hopeless for 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers but will play vs North Korea on Feb 29, 2012. It's the last game in 3rd round of FIFA WCQ Asia THE BIG QUESTION is 1 What are the preparations of the Philippines for this event? 2. Are they having series of matches before March 3? 3. Who are the available Europe-based players on March 3-18
Who knows, we might proceed to the finals, just think of our group in AFF Suzuki Cup. I hope the result of other games in our group will favor us. I hope we won't lose to aim for AFC Asian Cup slot

Matches on 9, 11 and 13. March . I think you can rule out the best of the fil-foreigners in Europe like Cagara, Lucena , Schrock and Mulders.
The AFC Challenge Cup squad will probably be based on the same squad that play LA Galaxy plus Etheridge or Müller.

I have already checked their games on March 2012. If they will be allowed by their clubs, they will miss 1 to 2 games depending how far can we go in this tournament. 1. Only 1 game will miss in their clubs if we on progress up to group stage only. 2. 2 matches will miss in their clubs if we proceed to semi-finals and finals. It's not bad for the club.
This is a national duty so I'm hoping that they would allow them to play for us. Our enemy is difficult to beat but I'm looking forward in this event to proceed to finals with the help of them.
