An error on both their parts, but it doesn't matter now. It's clear Indonesia can't push us around. That error shouldn't (and I believe won't) happen again. We just need to work on finishing up front.
Phil's semi-bicycle kick strike after the Indonesian goalie error stopped my heart. We had some decent chances. Too bad none of them converted to actual goals. But this is the "real" halftime, we'll get em next game.

well, for me, he should have drop down to cover Gonzales and leave Etheridge alone... i'm an Etheridge fan by the way anyways, that's the break of the game. several errors on the Indonesian side and they got lucky while for us, just that one miscommunication and bang, a goal for the Indons... Well a 1-0 is not such a huge obstacle, i am still confident we can get back on them this Sunday... Peace

It was a good effort by the Azkals in the first half (minus that defensive lapse). I was surprised that they chose to play offensively instead of their normal "parking the bus" game. But I think in the second half, most of the guys lost steam-- they probably had too many bookings while they were here. Let's hope that they regain their strength in the next three days and strike back.
GO AZKALS!!!

All right, now this may sound a bit premature since I know little to no details, but Ricky Olivares, the National Team's media officer, just tweeted:
"I am pleased to report that the Philippines will host the 2012 Suzuki Cup! Thanks to Nonong Araneta, Monico Puentebella & Ravy Khek. Read about the details tomorrow! But that is good news indeed.
Details tomorrow! Gotta do some stuff muna."

After watching the goal replay many times, it's a miscommunication between the goalkeeper and the defense. And in those cases it is MOSTLY the gk's error but there also has to be some fault to the defense. This is unfortunate because Etheridge and Jonsson are arguably two of the best players we have. Yes, Jonsson because of the tight defense we've been having.
You can be sure that this will not happen again. They'll be practicing that same play to make sure it doesn't happen. Of course, Indonesia will practice the same play over and over again so watch out for it in the 2nd game.
If all Indonesia can do is score one goal, and only on a misstep of the Azkals, then of course we have a chance. The fact that ONLY one goal was scored, and that from the best goal producing team in the tournament is a testament to how GOOD this team is. Can't lose sight of that. It was a close game, and this is still a good Azkal team.
Remember, they haven't really lost. They're only behind one goal.

we'll get those goals next game.
if we enter a penalty shootout however, I believe Neil is gonna be way better than the Indo goalie.

After spending even more time watching the replay, I have to change my conclusion and say that Jonsson is even more at fault than Etheridge. Either he should have marked Gonsales tighter or get out of the way. He did neither.
Again, the better lesson is that the defense is STILL very good. We're only down one goal and this is a two-game series with NO away-goals rule. Nothing to panic about. I'm actually still confident that our chances are good.
Etheridge is better than the Indonesian gk. Both made good stops, but only the Indonesian gk made that bonehead error that almost cost them a goal.

coach Macca says the defensive mix-up was due to the sheer volume of noise in the stadium. Our lads couldn't hear each other!

Congrats t d Azkals for an impressive game despite the loss considering all the odds against them. there's nothing to be ashamed of a 1-0 defeat. d indons cannot really maximize their talents bec. of Phil.solid defense. Gonzales' goal was not even a result of skillful shot, there ws element of LUCK as d ball bounced off d steel bar...now d Indons know its TOUGH to face Phil.team despite 13-1 loss in 2002 and being 1st time to reach d semis. NOT BAD AT ALL.

yes i agree. at least both teams now know how each other plays. the phils must also make use of offensive play... and now indonesia realizes how tough the phil team can be.

the indons give our Azkals a dose of our own medicine. they've studied our defensive plays and create opportunities on our mistakes. if you can notice how the indons defense lay back at their side to cover any attack from our Azkals. they also play long balls and abandoned their usual short passes because they knew that they can't beat our Azkals with their short passes and they're worried of on our quick counter attack. instead they played their chances in long balls. what they did was just kick the ball long enough to reach our penalty box and le their strikers do the rest and maybe wait for some lapses on our defense which it paid off for them. but considering the solid defense that we have, they only scored 1 goal (tsamba). i think right now the indons and much more wary in our next game. they now know how dangerous our azkals are and they already know that they just can't simply bully our Azkals. We still have our chance. i can't wait to watch the game on sunday. Not Bad of a loss. You still can do it coz WE BELIEVE!!!

With the away goal rule not used in this series, the game is not over. Its like playing 180mins(2games) and right now we are on half time and they lead 1 goal. We still another half to play(90mins).
Im surprised how the Azkals approach the game. I was thinking they would just defend. I like how they played lat nite.

That was a good game and I'm immensely proud of our boys. Finally, we have a decent team. The Indons are not invincible and we CAN score against them.
However, it is also apparent our offensive options are very limited. Araneta works very hard but needs more composure when he is on the ball. The same goes for Gener. I don't know if we have other decent attacking players on the bench.
No doubt we will find/develop good attacking players to give us more firepower. Until then the way we play in the Suzuki Cup is the only way we can play.
Looking forward to Sunday. GO AZKALS!

Apparently Neil felt really bad after the game, as if he let the team down. Chin up, big guy, you saved us countless times. You did us proud. Now give em hell in game 2!

That was a good game and I'm immensely proud of our boys. Finally, we have a decent team. The Indons are not invincible and we CAN score against them. ^ True this. ^ Before the game I was watching Indonesia's group stage highlights and they really looked dangerous, especially when their opponents commit mistakes. But a few minutes into last night's game, the Indons do look vulnerable. Perhaps our guys can shoot from farther out instead of forcing the issue in the box. Phil's initial attempts could have slipped passed the Indon keeper if the ball had more power behind it. Add to that that the Indon defence seems to panic on the rebound, which might give Araneta, Greatwich, and the other guys second chances. "Chin up, big guy, you saved us countless times. You did us proud."^ This too. ^
