Hope they could get a draw again next against Kuwait then our ranking will noticeably go higher. A draw against Kuwait won't let us go higher on the fifa ranking. In fact, it will slightly affect negatively. Tonight's draw against Bahrain also took some points away. Here is our fifa points on the next month edition - If we didn't play any matches this month : 197 pts - After a draw vs Bahrain tonight : 193 pts - And if we draw again with Kuwait : 189 pts Weird, right? So, FIFA point system doesn't work as you might believe it to. ELO Ranking system does. You will see why this happens when you research about the FIFA points calculating rules. Anyway, i only watched the 2nd half tonight and our defense in general was impressive. There were many negative sides too, but whatever, an away draw against a Middles Eastern team is nowhere near an easy job. Congratulation to all the lads. LOL what are you talking about. FIFA ranking system is the main basis not ELO. its like comparing Nike footwear with Anta

I agree with polarismtr. Most fans in football knowledgeable countries think the FIFA ranking system is flawed and shouldn't be taken too seriously. The ELO system is a much more scientific system developed by respected statisticians, that has proven itself a reliable system of ranking in the chess world for decades and also takes into account factors like whether the game is at home or away(FIFAs does not have this distinction), which is very impt. in determining the outcome of a game, as well as having a ranking system for tournaments that is better than FIFA's. It also does not punish lack of activity like FIFAs does. In the ELO system the ratings usually converge on the team's true strength after 30 games.
However, since FIFA is the governing body for football, we have to tolerate and respect its system of rankings as the criteria for which countries are seeded in tournaments. This is okay just as long that fans are aware that it is not a perfect system and not take it too seriously.
As for whether we have improved after the Bahrain game in the FIFA rankings, acc. to the ranking prognosis on the right provided by FIFA, we seem to have indeed gained a few points, which is logical since we just drew a higher ranked opponent.

Azkals vs The Reds(Bahrain) A time for old men [/img] Sure you'd always want to be positive when rooting for your national team. Sure you know that it would be a mighty undertaking. Maybe deep down, you felt they'd probably lose because, well, it's just that the numbers call for a loss. They're the big boys after all and were the new guys trying to get a foot in the door. But sometimes while you may not get what you want, you'll get what you deserve. And we did! READ MORE HERE: wikingandtheazkals.blogspot.com/2012/10/azkals-vs-redsbahrain-time-for-old-men.html

^^ exactly ;D it wasn't the result we wanted, but it was definitely one we deserve.
i just saw highlights of the vid...we weren't that far at all from an upset. it wouldve been an unbelievable result, but hey, as my papi used to say:
"theres a time and place for everything"...maybe Filipinos are meant to wait for an even better upset...*cough*

I have to defend, as much as I don't like the tactic, the use of long balls. Particularly in the first half, the Azkals tried playing a short passing game but nearly always found their passes intercepted. Even counter attacking surges were snuffed out in the midfield. The Azkals backline played deeper and deeper as time went on and they resorted to long balls, which is understandable given that we were being outclassed by a stern BHR defense. Fortunately, we had a solid backline. And Muller!

Looks like nahawa si Wolf sa sakit ni Boy Dapa, sayangness talaga yung chance na yun, plus the other 1on1 chance, even the commentators said the expected thing to do was just to lob it over the onrushing GK. Nataranta ata si Lobo.

Will that be our M.O. against stronger teams, resort to long balls to bypass the opponent's midfield and just hope that it lands perfectly in front of one of our strikers and hope that guy doesn't panic or fall over without anyone in a 1-kilometer radius touching him?

Nataranta ata si Lobo. The 1on1 chance was a big disappointment but the slip was forgivable. I was near the sidelines and the first expectator to reach the stadium 3 hours before the game started when I saw workers trying to patch and pound the grass turf. I could say that the pitch condition was far from ideal. It appeared water- logged and in certain parts of the field the grass were flaking off. Anyway sayang talaga kasi dapat win tayo kahit pa nga long balls ang ginamit na strategy.

Nataranta ata si Lobo. Lob shot you say? Thats not in Wolf's arsenal. He cannot do that, he only knows how to head the ball or shoot it "weakly" right or left past the net. I expected nothing from him on that one on one situation since his shot is usually weak and lacking in deceit or creativity. I dont know if he can still correct that or can improve on the power of his strike since he is 29 years old already. heck, even Porteria has better composure and power.

Porteria has more composure. his game against Guam and Chinese Taipei really showed his capabilities. plus he has an excellent decision making which is important as a striker. i think Wolf is good as a poacher ala chicharito. scoring a goal from a rebound or from a very good assist from his teammates

It is the Azkals' highest ever rating by FIFA. Just last October, the Azkals set a new high when they reached 147th place after their run to the championship in the Philippine Peace Cup. The Azkals rose in the FIFA rankings despite a win-less October, which saw them hold higher-ranked Bahrain in a goalless draw and then lose to Kuwait, 1-2, in a series of friendlies in the Middle East. The Philippines is now ranked 20th in Asia. The team is set to play Singapore in a FIFA international friendly on November 15 in Cebu City, their last fixture before playing in the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup. World and European champions Spain remain the top team, followed by Germany. Argentina, Portugal and Italy round out the top five.
