ok, well i guess it is time for my FEARFUL PREDICTION FOR THE AFF SUZUKI CUP I have been able to watch most of the games leading up to this competition. And, while I have seen much improvement and many promising signs, I fear our performance will prove to be a promise unfulfilled. Overall, I fear our coordination and cohesion is just not there yet, and I have seen too much evidence of a leaky defense that cannot contain speedy opponents. I think the tournament will be a good experience for the team, but I sincerely feel the result of the group stage will be a disappointment. So, here are my game by game predictions, which come from my head but which my heart sincerely hopes prove false... Oh how I hope to be proven so wrong! 24 Nov 2020hrs BKK / 2120hrs MNL : Thailand 2 - Phils 1 Thailand has a tough fight with the Azkals, but break the tie in the closing minutes of the game behind the vocal home crowd support screaming for the Thai win. 27 Nov 1730hrs BKK / 1830hrs MNL : Viet Nam 2 - Phils 1 A shell shocked Azkal team starts slowly and defensively against the higher ranked Vietnamese. However, the Azkal defense cannot contain their speedy attacks on the break and two of those result in goals for the Vietnamese team hungering for revenge. As the game draws to a close the Vietnamese fall down all over the field trying to delay and run out the game, and the Azkals fight back for a consolation goal, but too little too late. 30 Nov 2020hrs BKK / 2120hrs MNL : Myanmar 1 - Phils 1 The game ends in a meaningless draw as Vietnam and Thailand progress...

^fearful indeed, and very much possible.
I still think we still are the underdogs in this tourney, but would not be underestimated by the opponents and thus will come better prepared for us than in the previous edition. A good thing though, because we have the tendency to play better against higher odds and stronger opponents.
Thailand is a very tricky opponent, and would have the crowd support. The Azkals would play with grit though and be able to come out with a 1-1 draw.
Vietnam would be looking for vengeance, and would come to the game much more determined. I see an early goal by the Viets, but the boys will buckle down on defense and create chances on the counter. The 2nd half would provide an equalizer from the Azkals from the subs ending the game once again in a draw.
This would pave the way for a very exciting Myanmar match, where, knowing we need a win to have a chance to advance, the boys will deliver. The concurrent Thai-Viet match would be interesting as gthe winner would advance on top with the PHI as runner-up. A draw though would mean going to the goal differential, where the score against Myanmar would matter.

Home town crowds can also be detrimental, it can make the home team nervous and agitated because they feel pressured to perform and win convincingly. I think if we can withstand the expected 1st-half aggression the 2nd half would give us more chances since the home team would feel even more pressure to deliver. Bottomline is I see a bigger chance to win against Thailand compared to Vietnam. Myanmar is very winnable regardless of the past results against them.
Remember that the Thais are feeling overconfident and they still look down upon our team, they still don't expect that we'd have 95% of our best lineup to be available. Their coach still thinks that the guys who played against SIN in Cebu would be the exact same ones who'd be in our starting XI. I think he and the home crowd would be in for a very shocking surprise. ;P
I still believe the real test for us would be the Vietnam game.

My BOLD prediction: Azkals tops the stage with full 9 points
My conservative prediction: Azkals finishes 2nd in group A with 5 points. A Win against Myanmar, and a draw against both Viet and Thai.
in short, a loss will give us a hard time advancing, and probably spell doom.

Thais have not faced the new and revamped Azkals, and they still think of us as "minnows" I agree also that if we can withstand the 1st half flurry of Thai attack, then we can push for the win in the second half brimming with confidence. We are used to being the underdogs, and what a better way to project that with a very strong lineup.

I agree with one poster here in the forum who noted that the most crucial match in this group stage is the one against Vietnam.
This is a very tough group, a group of death indeed. While at the outset it is a very, very difficult challenge for the Azkals to hurdle there is also a bright side to the situation. Myanmar is not a push-over, certainly not for the Philippines and if they play their cards right, they might even be lucky enough to upset Thailand or Vietnam. Having Myanmar in the group is better than a team that can be steamrollered by the other 3 because if Myanmar draws or defeats Thailand and/or Vietnam, the outcome of this group is going to be interesting.
That is why the match against Vietnam is crucial, especially if Myanmar beats or draws with Vietnam. In this situation, a win against Vietnam by the Azkals will give us better chances of going through the semis.
This factor makes the group interesting and it is good that it is Myanmar we are facing last. The team has dealt with them before and our chances against them are better if getting to the semis is going to go down the wire and be decided by the final group stage match.
