NEW ROLE: File pic of Sukumaran (centre) giving tips to some players
K. SUKUMARAN has been appointed Johor FA’s new development officer and will be in charge of football development in the state as well as being director of coaching.
The appointment takes effect from Dec 1 – four days before the former teacher at Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar, Johor Baru, formerly known as English College, goes on his annual pilgrimage to India. He will be away for two weeks.
Sukumaran coached Johor in the Premier League in the recent M-League. Johor finished fourth in the league and qualified for the Malaysia Cup but failed to advance to the quarterfinals.
Sukumaran holds an “A” licence from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) apart from the England FA International Coaching Certificate.
He has also done attachment stints with English clubs Watford FC and Luton Town FC and famed Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam.
His new job will take him to all the 10 districts in Johor – Johor Bahru, Kota Tinggi, Mersing, Kluang, Pontian, Batu Pahat, Muar, Segamat, Ledang and Kulaijaya – as Johor embark on a massive development programme to make the state a powerhouse in the game.
“Of course I am happy with the new appointment. This is what I wanted to do last season but was instead told to coach Johor,” said Sukumaran, who has also done coaching stints with the FAM’s age group teams.
“As the Johor FA’s development officer I will be deeply involved in development at grassroots. The Johor FA wants all districts to develop football.
“At the same time I will be conducting basic courses and FAM ‘C’ licence courses in Johor.”
Sukumaran was the Johor FA’s director of coaching cum goalkeepers’ coach when Johor won the Razak Cup in 1981 and 1982. He also coached the Johor team that won the President’s Cup in 1987 and the Bardhan Cup (1982).
On the international front, Sukumaran was the coach of Johor that finished third and won the Fairplay Award in the Vietnam Independence Cup in 1998.

Band of captains
By RIZAL ABDULLAH
DEFENDER Ahmad Tharmimi Saiban is Johor Darul Takzim’s (formerly Johor FC) overall team captain but manager-cum-coach Fandi Ahmad has lined up several other names to wear the skipper’s armband.
Among the names are national captain Safiq Rahim, Safee Sali, Spain’s 2008 European Championships winning striker Daniel Guiza and ex-Lazio midfielder Simone Del Nero.
“Anyone of them can wear the skipper’s armband. All are capable of leading the team in a match. They bring with them a wealth of experience at all levels of competitions,” Fandi told sports247.my.
“The team’s overall captain is Tharmimi. He is a good leader and was with me when I managed Johor (Premier League side) last season. He has the qualities and is well respected by others.
“For a match I will pick my skipper on a rotation basis. I have several names in mind – Safiq, Safee, Guiza and Simone. There are others too who could wear the armband in a match.
We are not short of players with experience. Many of them have led their previous teams and this is a plus point for me. I can count on anyone of them to take the responsibility.”
Johor Darul Takzim have signed several strong names for the new season and have set a high target of winning all three silverwares at stake – the League Cup, the FA Cup and the much sought after Malaysia Cup.

POLICE continued their fairy tale run in the KL Cup when they defeated the hosts 2-1 at the Subang Jaya Sports Complex today.
Police had beaten Negri Sembilan Betaria 2-1 in their first match.
The back-to-back wins put Police in pole position to qualify for the final that will be played on Thursday. A draw in their next match will be enough to see them fight for the RM10,000 top prize.
In the second match that was played earlier, Perlis got their campaign back on track after trashing NS Betaria 6-0.
Perlis who lost their first game 2-1 to KL, will next meet Police while KL faceoff with Betaria. Both matches are on Tuesday.

NTFA back among the elite

The jubilant NTFA team.
NIBONG TEBAL Football Association (NTFA) were crowned the Penang Football League Division Two champions at the Polo Ground today after securing a comfortable 3-0 victory over Kongsi.
Needing just two points from their final two matches to secure their maiden Division Two title, NTFA left nothing to chance by racing into a three-goal lead within the opening 20 minutes.
They then cruised to victory on a wet and slippery pitch to confirm their league crown.
The former Premier League club side have now collected 32 points from 12 matches, four points ahead of nearest challengers Belia Asas Bersatu, who only have one match remaining.
“NTFA’s success in capturing the Division Two title by staying unbeaten in the league can be attributed to the total commitment shown by the players and officials.
“Everyone gave their full support throughout the campaign and it is good that we did not let the title chase prolong into the final match,” said NTFA coach Rozainal Rosli.
Despite having wrapped up the league crown, the former FAM Cup champions have vowed not to let up during their final league fixture against basement side Ramblers on Dec 29.
“The league title and promotion to the top division are already secured, but we will still for a win against Ramblers.
“We want to close out the season by remaining unbeaten. After conceding just five goals in our 10 wins and two draws so far, I want the players to make it a memorable season by finishing the job in a fortnight’s time,” said team manager Ong Eng Hua.
NTFA, the 2004 FAM Cup champions, were banished to the Penang League Division Three competition in 2009 after serving a two-year ban for withdrawing from the national-level Premier League competition due to financial difficulties in 2006.
They promptly lifted the Penang Division Three title three years ago, and will now regain their place among the elite club sides in Penang next season.
NTFA are also on course for a domestic double this year after qualifying for the semifinal of the Penang FA Cup knockout competition.

Fandi: Darul Takzim stars are a dream
Johor Darul Takzim boss Fandi Ahmad admits the side he will take charge of in the 2013 Malaysia Super League season is a dream come true for any manager.
By ESPNSTAR.com staff
Darul Takzim, who were previously known as Johor FC, unveiled their new signings for the upcoming season on Monday, which included a plethora of Malaysia internationals in Safee Sali, Safiq Rahim, Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, Aidil Zafuan, Azmi Muslim and Zaquan Adha.
Harimau Selatan have also captured two impressive foreign signings in Dani Guiza, who was part of the Spain side that won Euro 2008, and ex-Lazio star Simone Del Nero, and many are already tipping to challenge for the title.
While he admits he will have a talented group of players to work with in 2013, Fandi insists is important they play as a team and not as individuals.
"This is a challenge for me and I think it's also a good headache to have," he said. "To have a team like this is a dream for any coach, not only me.
"For me, every player has to follow instructions and most importantly be disciplined and have good teamwork.
"These players [unveiled at Monday's press conference] are not necessarily in the first XI. All the players in this team deserve the chance to fight for their place.
"They are all professionals so they know what needs to be done."
Tunku Ismail, the president of Johor Football Association (Johor FA) echoed his coach's sentiments and revealed his goal of making Darul Takzim one of the biggest teams in Southeast Asia.
"I am very happy with the team we have now," he added. "What Fandi and I see is not who is in the team, but the objective of the team as a whole.
"Our objective is to put Johor at the top and to be recognised in the country and in Southeast Asia. Fandi and I discussed this 12 months ago.
"I think Johor are blessed to have these quality players. However, they must remember that this is not a place for a holiday where they can sit around and receive their salary every month.
"We all have one objective which is to work hard. We should also show good attitude on and off the field so that we can set a good example for the other teams.
"The players should play for the name on the front of their jerseys, and not the one on the back."
Darul Takzim get their league campaign underway with a trip to newly-promoted Pahang.
