Well, it would be good to the stronger teams in the AFF and that includes us. but I highly doubt that the teams like Cambodia and Timor Leste could reap some benefits playing against Australia.

Rumours have told me that an "unofficial draw" for 2014 Suzuki Cup has been held today and these were the groups drawn:
GROUP A: Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Brunei and Australia.
GROUP B: Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Timor Leste and Cambodia.
The actual draw will take place sometime July 2014 in Singapore.

To actually play a benchmark team is a good thing, even if you get trashed. To actually experience it, is better than watching it on television. I believe it is a great incentive to the technical and tactical evolution of a football culture.

stellarboyHow was the groupings chosen in the past? When the qualifiers were still there, there were drawn in 4 pots of 2 teams, in order of seeding and points gained from the last edition: POT A- Hosts, POT B- Two highest-seeded teams, usually the previous semi-finalists, POT C- Two middle-seeded teams, POT D- Qualifiers winner and runner-up.

Whoa I hope that "unofficial draw" doesn't become the results of the "actual" one! LOL

I dont think it is correct that Australia have joined AFF... Invitee since 2006, but not sure officially a full member. I'm bit doubtful now, as I have not heard anything in the media here about it.

With all due respect, I reckon us joining the AFF would be counter-productive. For one, the 'roos would be much to handle for any ASEAN teams even Thailand or Vietnam, it would hinder not only our development as a team but for the AFF nations as well. Personally, i'd rather see us play in the East Asian champs competing with the Koreas and Japan as that would provide us with better experience. It would be better if Papua New Guinea would join you guys instead, that would provide more competition in the region in addition to being beneficial to PNG as well.

Hah... the way Holger is selecting pensioners, the 'roos are not that invincible and the gap that wide (remember last weeks Oman game). Also PNG is Oceania. Do miss those Oceania days

^ haha, now don't hate on the pensioners mate...Cahill, Thompson, Bresciano = legends. add Josh Kennedy and Brett Emerton into the line-up and we would have demolished Oman.
oh and PNG may be Oceania but so is Australia am i right? don't see why there's a difference.

I read an article on this issue a way back. Australia's fed seems to be okay with joining the AFF's age group tournaments but not the AFF championship. They feel they have nothing to gain by joining the Suzuki Cup and have already been accepted to play as an invited team to the East Asian Championships, where they feel they will get better competition.
The AFF as well it seems feel ambivalent about the idea, since their original charter required a member to be part of the ASEAN family and they felt adding Australia would require a change in their constitution. It would also add the specter of Australia dominating its regional championship all the time instead of being passed around its original members every few years.
I think this is shortsighted as in the Concacaf, I have witnessed the vast improvement that countries from the Caribbean and Central America have had through the years, with their constant exposure to the US and Mexico and each other, to the point that several of these small countries from their subregions are threatening to take WC slots from the 2 giants of the Concacaf region in the current hexagonal WC qualifiers. It also increased the international exposure and visibility of their players, which has allowed many of them to gain employment opportunities and experience in European and US clubs, which in turn, has strengthened their national teams immensely.
This is alse one of the reasons, why our Azkals is good for the region, as it allows the other members constant exposure to a European style of play, which will help improve them in the long run.
