dooley was a part of that squad when the US was just starting to get on the world map -- when it was all uphill and nobody seemed to believe. in the early 90's soccer/football in America was synonymous with curling. says a lot about why he wanted to take on this job. he also has a thriving academy in southern california and have been using a concept that sits comfortably with the competitive nature of the american youth there. he is legit. he has the blueprint embedded in his DNA. dooley is on the up and up.

Cool. When's he arriving? If he's here by next week, he only has 2 weeks to scout players, name the pool and introduce his system in time for the March friendly with Malaysia.

Thomas Dooley, a World Cup veteran, was officially named the new head coach of the Philippine men’s football team on Friday. Dooley, who flew in to Manila on Thursday to ink the deal with the Azkals management and the Philippine Football Federation, faced the media at the PFF office in Pasig. “I’m very honored, humbled and very excited to take this task,” said the 52-year-old Dooley, who played 81 timed for the United States. First order of business for Dooley, who also skippered the Americans in the World Cup, is the Azkals’ build-up for the AFC Challenge Cup in May. “The goal that we have in the coming months is winning the Challenge cup. I’m very happy to take this task. It will not be easy,” he also said. “This is the most important thing for me. I don’t even think of the Asian Cup yet. I’m taking it step by step. The clear goal is to win the Challenge cup.” Team manager Dan Palami believes that Dooley’s hiring has improved the Filipino booters’ shot at a deep run in the Challenge Cup. “We’ve always been saying the task at hand is for us to win the Challenge cup, and we are certainly ensuring the preparation will be adequate. With the entry of coach Thomas, the chances have gotten better,” said Palami. PFF President Mariano “Nonong” Araneta, who assured the federation’s support for the new coach, said that Dooley’s initial contract will be for a year. “He’s gonna coach the AFC Challenge cup, then the AFF Suzuki Cup, and if we win all the way to the Asian Cup in 2015 in Sydney,” he said. “With this credentials, we hope he will be up to the task. He will have the full support of the federation,” Araneta added. I watched his interview on TV5 last night, his english still has German accent but not too thick like Weiss'. I wish Dan to do an "initiation rite" on Coach Dooley by eating balut to welcome in the team like he did on Weiss,Cagara and Lucena back in 2011.

The Philosophy. The coach says he will employ a very typically German 4-2-3-1 formation, meaning four defenders, two holding (defensive) midfielders, a winger on either side, one attacking midfielder, and a target forward. This formation can be very defensive but it can also lend itself to attacking Football, since the wingbacks are often called to bomb downfield on overlaps. “I want to play the ball out of the back and win the ball back four or five seconds after we lose it” says the new coach, who is committed to offensive and attacking Football. Dooley says he would love the Azkals to emulate top clubs like Barcelona and Arsenal. “I like the way they play because they play simply” he intones. “Too many players make the game difficult for themselves.” Dooley also says that these clubs “are perfect in all the basics of the game” and that their technical prowess helps them play simple Football. He'd love to see the Azkals play a selfless, quick-passing game. Hopefully this will mean an end to the much-reviled long balls out of the back that often characterized the Michael Weiss era. “Football is a team game. If someone wants to play for himself, he should play Tennis” he said to guffaws from the room. ph.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/thepassionatefan/meet-thomas-dooley-azkals-coach-063522742.html

article from fifa.com_______
Philippines hire ex-USA captain Dooley(AFP) Friday 7 February 2014
........ "Technically they are pretty good. Tactically I think that we have to work a little bit," he said. "I know that basketball is the number-one sport in this country. Not everybody can play overseas basketball in the professional league, but in soccer you can," Dooley said. "This could be something for the future, for the young kids to get involved in soccer."........

Here's a video of USA vs. Brazil in the 1994 World Cup in the good ol' USA. San Francisco. Fourth of July. Brazil a man down. They still dominate the game, and the 1-0 score was likely more a show of not embarrassing the Yanks in their home field and during their Independence day than not being able to score more. I remember the game very well hoping against all odds that the Yanks would pull this one out, but it was complete domination by the Brazilians. They were in no danger of losing.
Our now-coach Dooley is in this game. Notice starting 0:38 looks like Dooley (I think that's him) has almost a shot on goal. If that ball made its way to Alexi Lalas (long hair, beard), who knows.... At around 3:00 there's the notorious elbow to Tab Ramos that resulted in a skull fracture. Makes me so mad just watching that again. Took him a long time to recover. Dooley is one of the first, if not the first to start calling for the medics. At 5:08 that's him again for an unsuccessful tackle on Romario around midfield. Romario splits the defenders and passes around Marcelo Balboa to Bebeto who makes the lone goal. Lalas was too late for the sliding block.
Enjoy.
